A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 9
This is a group song from the film ‘Saathiya” (2002), written by Gulzar. The singers are Richa Sharma, Mahalakshmi Iyer and Vaishali Shoma. Recently another song from this film is posted as post no. 7 of the series.
The lyrics of “Chhalka chhalka re” were waiting in drafts for some days now. But I thought will post the wedding songs later, exactly what is the reason for the other song going before this is the Sonu Nigam factor and the natural scenery plus the colourful. Also, once the words registered, they just had to be dissected for what they said and meant.
The star cast here is Rani Mukherji, Vivek Oberoi, Tanuja, Satish Shah, Sharat Saxena, Swaroop Sampat, Virendra Saxena, Sandhya Mridul etc. Most of these actors are visible in the song, except for Satish Shah. Rani Mukherji’s cousin is getting married, and Vivek Oberoi is part of the baraat as the groom’s friend.
This film was the Hindi remake of the hit Tamil film “Alaipayuthey” (2000), directed by Mani Ratnam. All A.R. Rahman compositions from the original film were reused in this film, except for “Naina Milaay Ke” and “Mainda Yaar Mila De Saaiyan”, which were new compositions.
The bride’s emotions in the tears flowing from her eyes, are stated as ‘Chhalka Chhalka re kalsi ka paani”. Different way of expression, as are some other terms in the song.
In the middle of the song, in between the playful antics between the bridal party and groom’s friends, Vivek Oberoi is trying to find out Rani Mukherji’s name. He bumps into the father and asks him for Rani’s name. The father says “Ladke, baaraat mein aaye ho warna tumko paraat mein daal ke goondh detaa”. I have never heard such threats.
Years ago, when my son was young, once he watched me making the dough. He was standing beside me watching with fascination. I still remember him saying “aata akela hogayaa”. I said “akelaa nahin ek ho gayaa”. Different way of seeing and understanding. The flour is, we don’t know comes from which wheat, from which field and here it comes to us in the flour form. We mix it with water, and it becomes one, several lakh different seeds. Only to get separated / divided and cooked in different chapatis.
Great, this Gulzariology is adversely affecting me, 😊.
It is another one of critically acclaimed songs by A. R. Rehman.

A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 7
The revival of the series on A. R. Rehman is beginning with this post. The last post in the series was this song.
I apologise for my tardiness in leaving the series like this for 2.5 years. None but myself to be blamed for not taking the targets/tasks seriously. Maybe that is the reason none of my series appear in the list of series posted in the blog.
Koyi nai, I plough on doggedly. Not that it is a hard task to find ARR gems, sometimes forgotten in decades old fog. Take the songs of “Saathiya” for instance. Read more on this topic…
This blog discusses Bollywood songs of yesteryears. Every song has a brief description, followed by a video link, and complete lyrics of the song. This is a labour of love, where “new” songs are added every day, and that has been the case for over SEVENTEEN years. This blog has more than 19700 song posts by now. This blog is active and online for over 6000 days since its beginning on 19 July 2008.
