“Draupadi”(1944) was directed by Baburao Patel for New Hans Pictures Limited, Bombay. The movie had Susheela Rani in the role of Draupadi who had also written the screen play. Other actors in the film were Chandramohan, Mazhar Khan, Surekha, Rani Bala, K N Singh, David, Badri Prasad, Kanhaiyalal, Leela Mishra, Nandu Khote, V G Pusalkar, D M Vaideshi, Madukar Gupte, Radhapyari, Premlata Dongre, Anant Marathe,Dixit, Raj Biswas, P R Joshi, Vasant Kanse, Ram Gopal, Janki etc.

20th May was the 34th remembrance day for Hansraj Behl, the composer emeritus of Hindi films.

In the history of Hindi cinema, only two music directors have had the distinction of being addressed as Master ji. The first one was Ghulam Haider Sb. Hansraj Behl was only the second music director to be so addressed. Maybe one of the reasons is that he always encouraged, mentored and promoted new artists. Many a singers and some music directors were given their debut breaks by him. Asha Bhosle and Madhubala Jhaveri started their singing careers under the baton of Hansraj Behl, and Bulo C Rani worked as assistant with him before getting independent assignments.

Baburao Patel, the fiery editor of ‘Filmindia’ magazine ( later known as ‘Mother India’) was associated with Hindi film industry since 1931. During 1931-35, he directed 5 films – “kismet’ (1931, Silent film), ‘Sati Mahananda’ (1933), ‘Maharani’ (1934), ‘Bala Joban’ (1934) and ‘Pardesi Saiyaan’ (1935) . However, with the starting of his monthly film magazine ‘Filmindia’ in 1935, Baburao Patel appeared to have taken a long sabbatical from Hindi film industry to concentrate on his editorial work. He again joined Hindi film industry in 1944 as producer and director of the film ‘Draupadi’ (1944), to promote Susheela Rani as actor-singer. This was followed by another film ‘Gwalan’ (1946).
