I have an old diary where I noted down lyrics of songs that I liked those days ( in 1976). I find that many of the songs that I have written down in that diary are popular even today. On the other hand, some very popular songs of those days have been forgotten.

Here is one such forgotten song. Now a days when we are rediscovering old gems, here is my contribution towards that exercise. This song is certainly an old gem of R D Burman, which deserves to be cleaned and dusted, and put on display as one of the masterpieces of R D Burman.

This is a total timepass tapori cheapstakes song, filmed on Rekha and Randhir Kapoor. The lyrics and picturisation are supposed to be totally chawanni chaap.

This song was not meant to be an evergreen one, as it was written for a tapori situation, but one must say that Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle has taken this song to a much higher plane with their singing. Too bad that this song was forgotten. Such fate awaits songs when movies flop. Randhir Kapoor became a sureshot bet for flop movies on those days and no wonder this song, though very popular those days, was soon forgotten.

Rekha managed to reinvent herself and turned over a new leaf, but Randhir Kapoor’s chalu roles like this finally proved to be his undoing, and offers of acting as hero dried up for him. Now he is better known as the father of Karishma and Kareena Kapoor.

Song- Dil machal raha hai (Khalifa) (1976) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Gulshan Baawra, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

dil machal rahaa hai rang badal rahaa hai
dil machal rahaa hai rang badal rahaa hai
dil machal rahaa hai rang badal rahaa hai
aag dil mein lagi tu bujhaa de naa

abhi samaa nahin hai rang jamaa nahin hai
abhi samaa nahin hai rang jamaa nahin hai
chaar din aur yoonhi bita denaa
dil machal rahaa hai rang badal rahaa hai
dil machal rahaa hai rang badal rahaa hai

ye berukhi kaisi
hai chaar din is zindagi ke
ke do din jawaani ke hai
wo to aa ja na mil ke bitaalen sanam
ye dillagii chhodo
koi hamen gar dekh legaa
to dar hai ki duniyaa ki nazron mein aise hi rusvaa na ho jaayen ham
kyaa karegi duniyaa jal maregi duniyaa
kyaa karegi duniyaa jal maregi duniyaa
tu jalan mere dil ki mita denaa

abhi samaa nahin hai rang jamaa nahin hai
abhi samaa nahin hai rang jamaa nahin hai
chaar din aur yoonhi bita denaa
dil machal rahaa hai rang badal rahaa hai
dil machal rahaa hai rang badal rahaa hai

aaungi main doli mein sajdhaj ke jab ghar piyaa ke
to kar lenaa jee bhar ke poore tu aramaan jaan-e-jaan dil ke sabhi
dekho ye tanhaayi jane hamen phir kab milegi tu lag jaa gale se
uthaa hai muhabbat ka toofaan dil mein abhi
tu maan jaa sainyaa ab chhod de bainyaa
tu maan jaa sainyaa ab chhod de bainyaa

jaage aramaan abhi to sulaa de naa
dil machal rahaa hai rang badal rahaa hai
dil machal rahaa hai rang badal rahaa hai
aag dil me lagi tu bujha dena
dil machal rahaa hai
abhi sama nahi hai
rang badal raha hai
rang jamaa nahin hai

Wah wah !
Yaadein taaza ho gayin…

I have not heard this song for ages !!!
I must have last heard this in the 1970s…

I was in high school when this song was released..
Saw this movie also around that time…
Flop of course (standard Randhir flop 😉 ).

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this song again.
I remember that line “kya karegi duniya….” was a stand-out line.

Thanks, Atul.

I feel sad when I see many such compositions by Pancham went under dust due to the movie being a super flop. A few examples
1) Tere liye palkon ki jhalar – Harjaee – Never heard this film being released.
2) Kherishu Varishu – Same film
3) Roz Roz ankhon tale – Although the song is a hit now a days-in those days it was rarely discussed. One of my favourites. But the film Jeeva was a super flop. And the picturisation of this song murdered the song. I enthusiastically managed the video of this song but never saw it again after the first view.
4) Thodisi Jameen-Sitara – Marvellous song but the picture was again flop. Its rarely heard by common people except RDB fans. But a gem of a composition.
5) Maine dil diya -Zameen Aasmaan – One more excellent composition but the film a flop.
6) Sili hawa chhoo gayee – Libaas – I don’t think the film would have been bad. Its a movie by Gulzaar but never released for reasons unknown. But the song speaks of Pancham’s class.
7) Saathi Aisa Lagtaa Hai – Namumkin – A gem of a song. Let aside the movie – even I had to toil hard to get hold of the audio cassette those days. Later I managed to collect a MP3 track.
And maaaaaaaa….ny more!!!
Thanks & Jai Pancham

R D Burman at least has a huge number of well known compositions under his belt. Think of those music directors who got limited opportunities and almost all their compositions suffered because these movies were not box office hits.
