People like me tend to classify bollywood songs simply between sad and happy songs. But there could be so many variations to each of these themes. For instance, sad songs could have so many shades. Mukesh has sung so many sad songs, and they all are different from each other.

A sad person could express himself in so many ways. He could take to drinking, he could lament about “bewafai”, or he could curse fate for his misfortune. In this song, the sad guy decides to withdraw into his shell, and decides to have nothing to do with people around him, especially the person who caused him his grief.

If one observes carefully, all these feelings of sorrow, grief, hurt etc comes through so clearly in the voice of Mukesh singing this song. And that is where the greatness of Mukesh lies. He could express various nuances of sadness with effortless ease. And this song is a great example of the master craftsman at work.

Song- Mujhe tum se kuch bhi na chahiye (Kanhaiya) ( 1959) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

mujhe tum se kuchh bhi na chaahiye
mujhe mere haal pe chhod do
mujhe mere haal pe chhod do
mera dil agar koi dil nahi
use mere saamne tod do
use mere saamne tod do
mujhe tum se kuchh bhi na chahiye

main ye bhool jaauungaa zindagi
kabhi muskuraayi thi pyaar mein
main ye bhool jaauungaa zindagi
kabhi muskuraayi thi pyaar mein
main ye bhool jaaungaa meraa dil
kabhi khil uthaa tha bahaar mein
jinhen is jahaan ne bhulaa diyaa
mera naam un mein hi jod do
mera naam un mein hi jod do
mujhe tum se kuchh bhi na chahiye
mujhe mere haal pe chod do
mujhe mere haal pe chod do
mujhe tum se kuchh bhi na chahiye

tumhen apnaa kahne ki chaah mein
kabhi ho sake na kisi ke ham
tumhen apnaa kahne ki chaah mein
kabhi ho sake na kisi ke ham
yahi dard mere jigar mein hai
mujhe maar daalegaa bas ye gham
main wo gul hoon jo na khilaa kabhi
mujhe kyun na shaakh se tod do
mujhe kyun na shaakh se tod do

mujhe tum se kuchh bhi na chahiye
mujhe mere haal pe chhod do
mujhe mere haal pe chhod do
mujhe tum se kuchh bhi na chahiye

A very very sad song which literally pierces through your heart.
One is reminded of Shelley’s ‘Stanzas written in dejection near Naples!’

If anyone could please tell the readers what ‘raag’ this song belongs to?

Atul, it would be great if you could add ‘raag’ info. in your song database where possible.

I came across your site a couple of years ago. Great work!
Thanks!
