“Bandini” was a movie that had some of the saddest songs one can come across. Each of these songs could move the audience, not only when the movie was released, but even today, some 45 years later.

Circumstances force Nutan to leave her home without informing anyone, and she leaves her home one night. Of course, she did not know what lay in store for her.

Leaving behind one’s near and dear ones is not as simple as it looks. There are so many boats one need to burn while deciding to make a clean break from the past. And this song deals with this topic very poignantly. For example, how will her childhood friends react, once they find her missing ? Will not they search for her all over the place ? Will they not mourn her absence ?

Leaving one’s past behind is a one way street. It is a very momentous decision. Once someone decides to leave the past behind, turning the clock back as if nothing happened is not feasible. It is like crossing a river.

Very sad, very philosophical. The sadness in Mukesh’s voice is matched by the sadness in Nutan’s eyes. The pain can be felt in the lyrics of Shailendra and in the musical strains of S D Burman.

Song-O jaane waale ho sake to laut ke aana (Bandini) (1963) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

o jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa
o jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa
ye ghaat tu ye baat kahin bhool na jaanaa
jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa

bachpan ke tere meet tere sang ke sahaare
bachapan ke tere meet tere sang ke sahaare
dhoondhenge tujhe gali-gali sab ye gham ke maare
poochhegii har nigaah kal tera thikaanaa
jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa

de de ke ye aawaaz koi har ghadi bulaaye
de de ke ye aawaaz koi har ghadi bulaaye
phir jaaye jo us paar kabhi laut ke na aaye
hai bhed ye kaisaa koi kuchh to bataanaa
jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa
ye ghaat tu ye baat kahin bhool na jaanaa
jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa

[…] Take the example of the movie “Bandini” (1963). Like most people, I am only aware about its songs, viz Mere saajan hain us paar, Mora gora ang lai le mohe shyaam rang dai de and O jaane waale ho sake to laut ke aana […]

I can figure out the general gist of the song, but a good translation is beyond me.

I have such an enormous respect for the poetry of Shailendra. He is no mere film song writer. Does anybody have any information if all his songs have been published in a book?

Mistry – Atul has captured the much of the meaning of the song very neatly in his intro to the song. I am using some of that. I will appreciate corrections.

o jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa
o jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa
(Oh dear, if possible please do return)
ye ghaat tu ye baat kahin bhool na jaanaa
(These river banks, these conversations, don’t ever forget)
o jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa

bachpan ke tere meet tere sang ke sahaare
bachapan ke tere meet tere sang ke sahaare
(your childhood buddies, who counted on your friendship)
dhoondhenge tujhe gali-gali sab ye gham ke maare
(they’ll search for you street by street, saddened with your departure)
poochhegii har nigaah kal tera thikaanaa
(they’ll enquire everyone as to your whereabouts)
o jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa

de de ke ye aawaaz koi har ghadi bulaaye
de de ke ye aawaaz koi har ghadi bulaaye
(every hour, they will be calling for you-?) is it here “de denge” or “de de ke”?
phir jaaye jo us paar kabhi laut ke na aaye
(once you cross over, it is very difficult to return)
hai bhed ye kaisaa koi kuchh to bataanaa
(I am stumped here)
o jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa
ye ghaat tu ye baat kahin bhool na jaanaa
o jaanewaale ho sake to laut ke aanaa

Bandini was a great film of its time. Nutan immortalised the character she played. Gone are the days when such films were made.
