“Bandini” was a movie that had some of the saddest songs one can come across. Each of these songs could move the audience, not only when the movie was released, but even today, some 45 years later.
Circumstances force Nutan to leave her home without informing anyone, and she leaves her home one night. Of course, she did not know what lay in store for her.
Leaving behind one’s near and dear ones is not as simple as it looks. There are so many boats one need to burn while deciding to make a clean break from the past. And this song deals with this topic very poignantly. For example, how will her childhood friends react, once they find her missing ? Will not they search for her all over the place ? Will they not mourn her absence ?
Leaving one’s past behind is a one way street. It is a very momentous decision. Once someone decides to leave the past behind, turning the clock back as if nothing happened is not feasible. It is like crossing a river.
Very sad, very philosophical. The sadness in Mukesh’s voice is matched by the sadness in Nutan’s eyes. The pain can be felt in the lyrics of Shailendra and in the musical strains of S D Burman.

I can figure out the general gist of the song, but a good translation is beyond me.
I have such an enormous respect for the poetry of Shailendra. He is no mere film song writer. Does anybody have any information if all his songs have been published in a book?

Mistry – Atul has captured the much of the meaning of the song very neatly in his intro to the song. I am using some of that. I will appreciate corrections.

Bandini was a great film of its time. Nutan immortalised the character she played. Gone are the days when such films were made.
