“Chitthi” songs, viz songs where one feels nostalgic about one’s loved ones and waits for “chitthi” from them makes for some of the best and most memorable songs. I have posted one such song from 1970s viz. ” daakiya daak laaya”.
The song “daakiya daak laaya” from a 1977 movie called “Palkon ki chhaon mein” was quite a popular “chitthi” song, before it was upstaged by another song of this genre. This song ” chitthi aayi hai watan se chitthi aayi hai” from “Naam” (1986) touched the heart strings of the listeners as no chitthi song had ever done before.
This song, composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal ( they had composed the earlier “Chitthi” song as well) was sung by Pankaj Udhas, And Pankaj Udhas to this date is known for this particular song.
Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics and I think that it is his lyrics that is the secret behind the huge popularity of this song. It is the words penned by Anand Bakshi that melt the hearts of the listeners and move them.
Coming to the movie itself, this movie called “Naam” was produced to bring the floundering careers of Kumar Gaurav and Sanjay Dutt back on track. This movie hardly helped the career of Kumar Gaurav, but Sanjay Dutt’s career began to look up after this movie. As one can see, Sanjay Dutt looked too young and skinny those days compared to how he looks now. He was paired opposite Amrita Singh in this movie. For trivia lovers, Sanjay Dutt and Kumar Gaurav are brothers in law. It is curious how this marriage of Sanjay Dutt’s sister to Kumar Gaurav made the lead cast of “Mother India”, viz Nargis, Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar relatives of each other.
This “chitthi” song has become an immortal and evergreen song, and it is just the kind of song that would appeal to everyone, irrespective of the type of music they like to listen to.

Thanks Atul, i always get emotional after listening these type of songs, but this song touched my heart and emotions. Sometimes feel like coming back to my motherland. Ab ye sone ka pinjra hai na choda jata hai na rha jata hai. Mitti ki khusbu, maa ka dular, galion me khelna, school-college ke dost…….. kya yaar dil k taar ched diye….
