It is one of the iconic songs of 1970s. It is the title song of the movie “Chalte Chalte”. It was a small budget off beat movie. The lead actors in this movie were Vishal Anand ( credited as Vishal in the movie), Simi Garewal and Nazneen.
Vishal Anand looks like Dev Anand, and employs similar mannerisms and style of dialogue delivery. But unlike Dev Anand, his acting skills leave much to be desired. I feel that his poor acting was a big let down for the movie, which had a promising plot.
It turns out that Vishal Anand is actually related to Dev Anand ( he is Dev Anand’s nephew) but that does not alter the fact that he acted poorly in this movie.
In those days movie makers were very particular in ensuring that they got “U” certificate from censors and not “A” certificate for their movies. The producer of this movie appears to be different from typical Bollywood movie makers. He was apparently aiming at “A” certificate, considering how he shows the two main ladies in this movie always in various stages of dishabille because of the demands of the storyline. Despite his best efforts, the censor still awarded “U” certificate to the movie. 😉
The story is interesting, if you can tolerant Vishal Anand’s hamming. The saving grace of this movie is its music. Bappi Lahiri, who was just one movie old as a music director, gave stunning music in this movie, which to this date must be regarded as one of the finest music he has created in his long career.
This title song has become an evergreen and immortal song, and in fact it is one of the two most well known songs beginning with the words “Chalte chalte”, the other such song being from “Paakeezah”.
The lyrics of this movie were written by Amit Khanna and he too did a wonderful job. There is no doubt that his lyrics were behind the popularity of the songs of this movie.
This song ” chalte chalte mere ye geet yaad rakhna” was picturised on Vishal Anand and Simi Garewal. It is supposed to be a flashback song, as Simi Garewal recalls her past with Vishal Anand.
As I have already mentioned, this song is one of the most memorable songs of 1970s, and a feather in the caps of its creators, be it Bappi Lahiri, Amit Khanna or Kishore Kumar ( the singer).
PS- Dear readers of this blog, “chalte chalte yaad rakhna” that this geet is 300th of this blog. Yes, this blog competes its triple century of some of the finest songs that Bollywood has created over the decades.
I thank you all for your encouragement, which has enabled me to complete 300 songs in such a brief period of just over 5 months. I hope that you will continue to partonise this blog in future also, because 300 songs is just the tip of the iceberg, there are thousands of great Bollywood songs that remain to be discussed.
PS-Much later (six years after discussing this song), I was informed that this song has a sad version as well. So now I have included the lyrics of this version too which were provided by Prakashchandra.

Song- Chalte chalte mere ye geet yaad rakhna (Chalte Chalte) (1976) Singer- Kishore Kumar, Lyrics- Amit Khanna, MD- Bappi Lahiri
Lyrics
chalte chalte, mere ye geet yaad rakhnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
chalte chalte, mere ye geet yaad rakhnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
rote hanste, bas yoonhi tum
gungunaate rahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
pyaar karte karte, ham tum kahin kho jaayenge
inhi bahaaron ke, aanchal mein thak ke so jaayenge
pyaar karte karte, ham tum kahin kho jaayenge
inhi bahaaron ke, aanchal mein thak ke so jaayenge
sapnon ko phir bhi, tum yoonhi sajaate rahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahanaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahanaa
chalte chalte, mere ye geet yaad rakhanaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahanaa
kabhi alavidaa naa kahanaa
beech raah mein dilbar, bichhad jaayen kahin ham agar
aur sooni si lage tumhen, jeewan ki ye dagar
beech raah mein dilbar, bichhad jaayen kahin ham agar
aur sooni si lage tumhen, jeewan ki ye dagar
ham laut aayenge, tum yoonhi bulaate rahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
chalte chalte, mere ye geet yaad rakhnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
rote hanste, bas yoonhi tum
gungunaate rahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
kabhi alvidaa naa kahnaa
hmmm hmmm

Atul, I have enjoyed reading your blogs and listening to the songs. Rafi has been my favorite singer and I was wondering if you had included his song “Kehdo koi na kare yahan pyar” in any of your categories. It feels like this would be a song about betrayal of one’s love. I don’t know which movie this song is from. Another one I can think of is “daaman mein daag laga baithe hum pyar mein dhokha kha baithe” from Dhool ka Phool, again about betrayal. Both are great Rafi songs, sung with a lot of emotion.

This film is a copy of the Clint Eastwood film Play Misty for me. Everything was nice except that idiot Vishal Anand. He may be a relative of Dev Saheb but is nowhere near Dev Saheb so far as talent is concerned. Good thing this fool got out of the industry
