#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————
(Birthday – Music Composer-Rajesh Roshan)

Today 24th May is the sixty-eighth birthday of music director-lyricist Rajesh Roshan(born on 24.05.1955). He is one of my favorite all time composer.

I had earlier written about him in a couple of my earlier posts on the blog. So I am not going to repeat all that here again. One thing I definitely write again is that Rajesh Roshan’s songs are part of the ‘big nostalgia’ of my growing years and may be many people like me are fond of him and
his compositions .

Today on the occasion of his birthday I am presenting a song from the movie “Hamaari Bahu Alkaa-1982”.

It was directed by Basu Chatterjee for ‘Anuradha Films. Shyam Sundar Seksariya was the producer of this movie.

Basu Chatterjee also wrote the screenplay and dialogues of this movie. Story of this movie was written by Manoj Basu.

Editing of this movie was done by V.N. Mayekar.

The cast of this movie included Rakesh Roshan, Bindiya Goswami, Asrani, Prema Narayan, Utpal Dutt, Sudha Shivpuri, Master Raju, Ranjeet Sood, Manik Dutt, Aroop Ganguly, Lakshami, R.S. Chopra, Viju Khote Meghdoot, Manmauji, Pappu, Soni, Dev Sharma, Meena, Satya Bannerjee, Pratap, Jayshree T., Meena T., and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 12.01.1982.

I remember to have watched this movie at Akola, but I have forgotten about it by now. One thing that I still remember is that I liked this movie very much. It is movies like this one that I love to watch.

“Hamaari Bahu Alkaa-1982” has five songs. Three were written by Yogesh and two by Amit Khanna.

Music for this movie was composed by Rajesh Roshan.

Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Usha Mangeshkar, Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh, Alka Yagnik and Peenaz Masani had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Here is the list of songs in this movie:-

SNo Song Title Lyricist Singer/s
01 Soona soona soona ghar hota hai ek naari binaa Yogesh Lata Mangeshkar, chorus
02 Prem ki hai kya sun paribhaashaa Amit Khanna Kishore Kumar
03 Ham tum rahenge akele wahaan Amit Khanna Amit Kumar, Alka Yagnik
04 Ghar mein khul ke ham nahin mil sakte Yogesh Usha Mangeshkar, Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh, Peenaz Masani
05 Pakka jaamun todo nahin Yogesh Alka Yagnik, Peenaz Masani

In my earlier post with the song of ‘Ratnadeep-1979’ I had mentioned about Basu Chatterjee – the director of this movie – having a great ‘ear’ for music. He mostly had Rajesh Roshan as music director in his movies. They have given some of the timeless classics and unforgettable songs in Hindi Film History.

They worked together in the following eight movies:-

SNo Title of the movie Passed by Censor Board Lyricist/s Music Director
01 Swaami 17.05.1977 Amit Khanna Rajesh Roshan
02 Khattaa Meethhaa 30.12.1977 Gulzar Rajesh Roshan
03 Priyatamaa 20.09.1977 Anjaan Rajesh Roshan
04 Dillagi 18.07.1978 Yogesh Rajesh Roshan
05 Baaton Baaton Mein 31.03.1979 Amit Khanna, Yogesh Rajesh Roshan
06 Manpasand 26.06.1980 Amit Khanna Rajesh Roshan
07 Hamaari Bahu Alkaa 12.01.1982 Yogesh, Amit Khanna Rajesh Roshan
08 Prateeksha 07.04.2006 Yogesh Rajesh Roshan

(I hope I have compiled the above table correctly. Readers can point out mistakes and suggest additions if any).

Today I am presenting another ‘signature composition’ of Rajesh Roshan from themovie ‘Hamaari Bahu Alkaa-1982’. I like this song very much. It is sung by Kishore Kumar. I was longing to share this song since long on the blog.

On screen the song starts in background first and then we can see Rakesh Roshan lip-syncing the song.

Lyrics are by Amit Khanna and music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

Enjoy this wonderful song …

Situation of the song 🙂

Our hero (Rakesh Roshan) has got married but he is still studying. So his father (Utpal Dutt) wants him to spend focus more on ‘studies’ instead of spending more time with the ‘bahu’. As usual ‘jab ghar mein nayi bahu aati hai to bete ko kaun poochhtaa hai, waise hi yahaan bhi sab log din-bhar ‘bahu’ ke peechhe pade rehte hain, aur wo thhak kar raat ko jaldi so jaati hai. So our ‘newly married’ hero cannot spend ‘quality time’ with his wife (Bindiya Goswami).

His classmate (Asrani) suggests him to bunk the classes in day time and to go home, as at that time neither his father nor his younger brother would be at home so nobody should disturb the couple during that time…

The ‘hero’ is attending a class in the ‘class room’. He laeves the class room, and then he begins to dream of this song . 🙂

With this song, the movie “Hamaari Bahu Alkaa-1982” makes its debut on the blog…

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Debutant Movie- Kismat/Qismat-1980)
——————————————-——————————

With this post we introduce the movie ‘Qismat-1980’ on the blog.

Movies with this title-Kismat or Qismat were made and released in the years ‘1943’, ‘1956’(Qismat), ‘1968’, ‘1980’(Qismat), ‘1995’(Qismat) and in the year ‘2004’.

(I hope all them brought good ‘fortunes’ to the ‘producers’ of the movies 🙂 ).

Out of these the movies released in ‘1943’, ‘1956’ and ‘1968’ have already been represented on the blog.

I was longing to present this movie on the blog as it serves the purpose of bringing ‘movies with the same title on the blog’ (at least till the decade of 1971-1980).

‘Qismat-1980’ was directed by Bhishm Kohli for ‘Pashupati Pictures, Bombay’.

It had Ranjeeta, Mithun Chakravarty, Shakti Kapoor, Shivangi Kolhapure (debutant movie), T.P. Jain, Urmila Bhatt, Dulari, Gautam Sarin, Tarun Ghosh, Vimal Chopra, Rajeev, Bholu Vadhawan, Gurbachan, Om Shivpuri, Baby Pinki, Master Bobby, Neelofar, Birbal, Rajat, Lateef and others.

Jalal Agha had a guest appearance in this movie.

This movie was a ‘social movie’, passed by Censor Board on 18.08.1980.

‘Qismat-1980’ has six songs written by Amit Khanna and composed by Bappi Lahiri. Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Yesudas, Kishore Kumar and T. Meena had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Here is the list of the songs in this movie with their respective singers.

SNo. Song Title Singer/s
01 O… kuchh chhup chhup ke aate hai Asha Bhonsle
02 Aa… arey masti… masti kahaan hai mastaana aa gaya hai Manna Dey
03 Ye zindagi chaman hai Yesudas, chorus
04 Gir ke sambhalte hain ham Kishore Kumar
05 Ik to main jawaan us pe tu yahaan Asha Bhonsle
06 Mehboob ki mehbooba ko lalkaaro nahin T. Meena

Today we present a song sung by Yesudas from this movie. I became aware of this song more than one decade later when I got to listen to it on radio.

I have not watched this movie ‘Qismat’ and also not aware of how it did fare at the box office then.

A partial video of the tsong is available where we can see Mithun Chakravarty lip-syncing this song and trying to console and motivate Ranjeeta on the screen.

Lyrics for the song are by Amit Khanna. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. This must be one of the best songs that Bappi Da has composed in the decade of 1971-1980.

Let us now listen to the song…

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Aur Kaun-1979’)
——————————————-——————————

(A tribute to Lata Mangeshkar on her first ‘Remembrance Anniversary’)

Today we pay our tributes to the greatest singer of our country Late Lata Mangeshkar on her ‘first Remembrance Anniversary’ on 6 February 2023.

She passed away last year in 2022 on this day.

As a tribute to her today I am presenting a ‘lesser-heard’ song from the ‘1979’ movie ‘Aur Kaun’. I was not aware of this song anytime in the past. I was aware of the name of the movie, though which was released in my childhood and was ‘certified’ as an ‘adult movie’, thus ruling out any chances that I would be able to watch it during its first run. . As luck would have it, I never got an opportunity to watch this movie. (Watching it on Internet is the most uncomfortable thing for me so I have not tried it. May be in future if it is required I will try 🙂 ).

Recently when I was browsing the blog and I came across this movie, I noticed that only one song from this movie was posted on the blog and that too long back on 01.05.2009. This song is ‘haan pehli baar ek ladki mera haathh pakad kar….’, which no doubt is the most well-known song from this movie I guess.

At least I can say that I am familiar with this song. But when I looked for the other songs from this movie they didn’t look familiar to me. However, when I listened to the song under discussion in this post,it reminds me of couple ‘pre-Himmatwaala’ period Bappi Lahiri compositions that I had shared in the blog in the past.of songs composed by Bappi Lahiri from the ‘pre-Himmatwaala’ period and those I have shared on the blog so far, namely songs from ‘Paapi-1977’ and ‘Saboot-1980’. One common thing about these songs is that they are sung by none other than Lata Mangeshkar.

So I think this rare song (the ‘YouTube’ link say so) suits the occasion perfectly when we are paying our tributes to Lata Mangeshkar.

This is the only song that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in this movie ‘Aur Kaun-1979’.

Padmini Kapila lip syncs this “bhootiya” “gumnaam hai koi” genre of song on screen and actor Sachin, like archtypical hero of such horror films, tend to get drawn towards the source of the song and thusfalling into the trap trap.(That is my guess from watching the video of this song).

“Aur Kaun-1979” was directed by Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay for ‘Ramsay Pictures’ or their home production.

It had Sachin, Rajni Sharma, Padmini Kapila, Roopesh Kumar, Sudhir, Vimal Sahu, Kanchan Mattu, Birbal, Om Shivpuri and others.

Madan Puri and Nazir Hussain had a friendly appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 05.01.1979.

This movie had four songs (as per detail given below), which were written by Amit Khanna and composed by Bappi Lahiri.

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Haan pehli baar Kishore Kumar 01.05.2009
02 Hoon … raat aayi re, ho saath laayi re Bappi Lahiri, Sulakshana Pandit, chorus
03 Aur kaun aayegaa aa Lata Mangeshkar
04 Dilwaali kidhar se aayi hai Vijayeta Pandit, chorus

Today’s song is the second song from this movie to be posted on the blog.

Let us now listen to the song, which is the title song of the movie and pay our tributes to Lata Mangeshkar.

(Lyrics noted are as per audio link which is a longer one…)

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–—-
#Bhoole-Bisre Geet #
—————————————–
(#Music Composer-Singer-Bappi Lahiri# 11– The magic of Bappi Da & Kishore Kumar)

We still have one day to go to enter the new year ‘2023’. However, celebrations have started in other parts of the world and generally the joyful atmosphere prevails in this part too. For many people the ‘new year fever’ begins from the day of ‘Christmas’ and continues till first week of January in the new year.

For many like me everyday is new day and a new beginning. It begins with music everyday and ends with music every day while the daily routine & activities continues including functions at individual workplaces.

We cannot say that all may be in the same jovial mood. Many might be in sombre mood for one reason or another. While some people may be celebrating, others might be performing duty. People of armed forces and law enforcing agencies are cases in point.

At my workplace the principal employer is celebrating annual day, so they arranged a sports day and conducted matches on 25th Dec and the remaining matches are to be held on 31st Dec. Then on 30th they arranged a ‘special lunch’ for all including workmen, as well as ‘awards’ for services and discipline at the end of the day.

However, my department i.e., the people working in the Warehouse had to back-off from participating in sports and all other recreational activities due to an audit planned in the first week of the new year.

Everybody of us will be working on saturday (31st) and Sunday(first day of the year) compulsorily, while all others will be celebrating on these two days that happen to be natural holidays.

Nevertheless me and my colleagues accompanying me in everyday travel from home to office and office to home are going to celebrate with ‘music’ as we celebrate everyday while travelling. And will celebrate the memories of movies during the little ‘relaxation’ timings at workplace.

At the end of every year, I wish that the last one week or few days should be celebrated with a ‘party’ song and with a song of ‘ a new year’.

Today’s song is a party song and from the video of this song we can see that it is happening at party for a ‘new year’…

So here is this well-known song not posted on the blog so far…

This song is from the movie ‘Dil Se Mile Dil-1978’.

“Dil Se Mile Dil-1978” was directed by Bhishm Kohli for ‘Kailashpati Pictures, Bombay’. It had Bhishm Kohli, Shyamli, Om Shivpuri, Leela Mishra, Abhi Bhattacharya, Gautam Sarin, Jayshree T., Madhup Sharma, Bharat Kapoor, Julie, Shankar Bhake, Vimal Chopra, Shriram Shastri, Gurbachan, Adolf Fernandes, Vijay Bali, Mahendra Tyagi, Salim Khan, and others.

Mehmood, Shakti Kapoor and Lalita Pawar had guest appearances in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.08.1978.

This movie has five songs (including one two-part song) written by Amit Khanna.
Music for this movie was composed by Bappi Lahiri.

Here is the list of songs of this movie :-

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 He… haathon mein mere bhi mehndi lagaao Sulakshana Pandit, Vijayeta Pandit
02 Dil se miley dil … (in two parts) Kishore Kumar (chorus)
03 Ye nainaa ye kaajal Kishore Kumar 13 October 2014
04 Ae… chhodo bhi ye nakhhara karo pyaar ham se Lata Mangeshkar
05 Aabraa kadaabra hinchi…aflaatoon Bappi Lahiri, chorus

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar, and I remember this song was frequently heard in those years. This song was on ‘paaydaan’ number twenty-six in the list of ‘annual Binaca Geetmala of 1978’ among the top ‘34’ songs of that year.
However, I didn’t like this song during its time that came during my growing years, and I found it irritating whenever it played on the radio.
I had never listened to it attentively unlike now while preparing for this post. On the other hand, I like the other Kishore Kumar song from this movie which is ‘ye nainaa ye kaajal’. I had shared it on the blog when I become associated with this blog. The first time I fell in love with this song was in ‘1987’ when HMV had released a ‘four-cassette’ album as ‘ a tribute to the legend – Kishore Kumar’ after he had passed away.

I think this movie was screened at our colony during the weekly screening of movie. But I do not remember anything about this movie and its details.

Today’s song is lip-synced on screen by Bhishm Kohli who used to act like ‘Dev Anand’ and I guess it is actress Shyamli sitting there as we see in the picturisation of the song. The picturisation also shows some regular faces of Hindi movies (whom I am unable to identify by names).

As mentioned above today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and lyrics are written by Amit Khanna.
Bappi Lahiri is the composer of this today’s song.

Let us listen to this wonderful song now and enjoy music …

“Man Pasand” (1980 – censored on 26-6-1980 and released on 11-7-1980) was among the first few movies whose music cassette was purchased by my father along with “Yaarana” when they hit the market. And since then I am a huge fan of their songs. I Know almost all of them by heart.
This was a movie produced by Amit Khanna and directed by Basu Chatterji. Rajesh Roshan was the music director and Amit Khanna himself wrote the lyrics. The movie itself was inspired by the famous stage play by George Bernard Shaw – ‘Pygmalion’ (first published in 1913), and also on the hugely popular iconic film ‘My Fair Lady’ (1964 – Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn). The movie stars Dev Anand, Tina Munim, Girish Karnad, Simple Kapadia, Leela Mishra, Jalal Agha (appears as a guest in the song with this post), Piloo Wadia and Mehmood.

The movie has Dev Anand and Girish Karnad playing best friends, bachelors and musicologists. They encounter a loud and foul-mouthed vendor of ‘datun’ {neem branches} in the late-night local trains of Mumbai. Then and there, Dev (Pratap) throws a challenge that he can transform the unpolished girl into a graceful and talented singer and Karnad (Kashinath) picks up the bet and agrees to marry the girl if Pratap is successful.”

The above is from the last post that I wrote for this movie, in 2018 to celebrate Dev Anand’s 95th birthday.

We revisit the movie today. It has songs in the voice of another legend. When this movie was being made i.e. at the time of recording the songs of this movie, our Nightingale or Saraswathi- incarnate (as she is addressed by her ardent fans) must have been in her late 40s or just turned 50. She had been in the industry for nearly 37-38 years having stepped into the film world at the young age of 13, with the sole aim of supporting her family after the untimely death of her father. There was a time when she was rejected by Sashadhar Mukherjee for having a “thin-voice”. But it is that same “thin-voice” which was used in later years for songs that were filmed as early morning songs- “jaago mohan pyaare jaago” (Jaagte Raho); “jyoti kalash chalke” (Bhabhi Ki Choodiyan); “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” & “Bhor bhaye panghat pe” (Satyam Shivam Sundaram); and the bhajan which Saira Banu lip syncs in the morning hours in “Shaagird” – ‘Kanha kanha aan padi main tere dwar’. These are only a sample of what India’s Nightingale -Lata Mangeshkar – has given us over a career span of about 66-67 years. From the discography available on various websites it looks like she has stopped singing film songs sometime in 2010- that is why I have said that the career span is about 66/67 years. Of course, there was a time when she used to sing for actresses who were 50 years younger to her; then she switched to singing one or at the most two songs per movie after 2001 but has kept her date with recording songs by bringing out non-film albums and bhajans etc. I read somewhere that after a 14-year hiatus she recorded a song for some movie called “Dunno Y—Na Jaane Kyun” (2010).

She is a recipient of various awards including the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1989, the Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999) and finally the Bharat Ratna in 2001. She definitely is India’s Ratna (Gem), don’t know if we will have another like her ever!!!!

Coming back to the song for this post. This is the song by which Pratap (Dev Anand) introduces a fully trained & graceful Kamli (Tina) to upper class, high-society, party-going friends of his. He showcases her as an accomplishment of his scientific method of music coaching. The song which is composed by Rajesh Roshan as a semi classical number was picturised on a young Tina Munim and gives us a sample of what the ‘Koyal Kanthi’ Lata Mangeshkar is all about. Why I say sample is because this is a very short song. There are other songs where she has sung full classical and semi classical for close to ten minutes or even more. Here I remember another song where, in a Dev Anand movie, S D Burman has given Lata Didi (as the film industry addresses her) an 8½ minute song which has various ragas incorporated in it (any guesses which song I am referring to).

“Man Pasand” has had a rather slow journey on the blog. The movie has 8 songs of which the first one in Mohd. Rafi’s voice was posted in March of 2009. The previous song posted was in 2018 on the occasion of Dev Anand’s birth anniversary.

Here is the penultimate song the post for which began a day before Devsaab’s birth anniversary in 2019.

I can write a lot more about the song and the near-parallel careers of Devsaab and Latadidi in the film industry. But I choose to halt here.
Wishing our dear Lata Mangeshkar, a very Happy 91st birthday. Salute to her on her long innings in the industry.

(#Music Composer-Singer-Bappi Lahiri#1)

Welcome all, to this post which is another of those posts of mine that was planned way back (in February 2019, to be precise)when I presented a song from the 1977 movie ‘Paapi’.

Music for this movie ‘Paapi-1977’ was composed by Bappi Lahiri. Though I had not watched this movie ‘Paapi-1977’, I liked the song that I then presented. Today’s song, also by Bappi Lahiri, came up in the list of suggestions that appeared in ‘YouTube’ with that song.

One comments on YT on this song caught my attention. The comment was about the use of ‘flute & base guitar’ in the today’s song. When I listened to the song I was awestruck. I do not remember to have listened to this song any time before. And also, may be the movie it was from, wasn’t a successful movie this song may have been forgotten easily.

So, it was then that I decided to take up this song for presentation, and was looking for the right occasion. Later on, I decided to send it for posting on 27th November the birth day of composer, singer Bappi Lahiri (sources mentioned him as a dancer, disco musician, and actor and record producer too).

Bappi Lahiri was born on 27th November’1952 in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal to Aparesh Lahiri and Bansari Lahiri who themselves were accomplished Bengali singers and musicians. Both his parents also came from Jalpaiguri.

On 27th November’2019 Bappi Lahiri celebrated his sixty-seventh birthday!!!

Today we belatedly wishing him a ‘very happy birthday and a healthy and peaceful musical life ahead’.

He made his debut as a singer in a Bengali movie ‘Daadu’ in 1972 and if we considered this first assignment of him in Bangla movie ‘Daadu’ which came to him in 1969 (as told to Anupama Chopra in an interview), this year in 2019 he has completed fifty years in his film-music journey. He has many records on his name and also have been conferred by many many awards till now. And he is still going on – rocking.

The first Hindi movie he composed music was ‘Nanhaa Shikaari’ which came to him in 1971 and this movie was released in 1973.

I was never a big Bappi Lahiri fan, but I was actively considering writing about Bappi Lahiri compositions. The reason behind this was that here in our camp, we were listening to many of his songs (both as a composer and singer) during our regular parties and I realised that these songs were liked by many and they all have good music, particularly the ‘beats’ which people danced and enjoyed a lot. These were mainly the songs from his ‘disco era’.

One of my bosses particularly loved ‘Jeele le jeele le aayo aayo jeele le’ every time ‘bhaai ye gaana zaroor bajaana’. On one or two occasions when he was asking us to play some ‘English’ or ‘Kenyan’ music I brought him back to the songs of ‘Armaan’, ‘Waardaat’, ‘Disco Dancer’ or played other Bappi Lahiri songs.

‘Bambai se aaya mare dost’ from ‘Aap Ki Khaatir-1977’ was perhaps the song that first introduced me with the music of Bappi Lahiri. This song was very popular then and was played frequently on radio and loud speakers or in orchestras.

Subsequently I got introduced to songs from ‘Pyaara Dushman-1980’, ‘Armaan-1981’, ‘Waardaat-1981’, ‘Namak Halaal-1982’ etc.
I liked the songs from ‘Armaan’, ‘Waardaat’, though I had not watched these movies until now.

I also liked the songs of ‘Disco Dancer-1982’ very much, and I specially remember them because they were played by my friends during the summer vacation of 1983 after our 10th board exams were over.

Bappi Lahiri had composed some nice songs in his pre-‘disco era’ that I was not aware of. Subsequently I have discovered a few such songs and I have shared afew of them on the blog.

For example, songs like ‘Ye naina ye kaajal’ from ‘Dil Se Mile Dil-1978’, ‘Sainyya bina ghar soona’ from ‘Aangan Ki Kali-1979’ etc. were shared by me long back.

After ‘Disco Dancer’ it was ‘Himmatwaala-1983’ which I watched with my younger brothers & cousins in the summer vacations (1983) and I liked few of its songs if not all.

Then there were movies where Bappi Lahiri composed songs for the movies from ‘South’ banners where Jeetendra was the main hero. From these movies I remember, ‘Jaani Dost-1983’, ‘Haisiyat-1984’, ‘Tohfaa-1984’ and of course I like all songs from ‘Sharaabi-1984’.
I also liked some of the songs from ‘Naukar Biwi Ka-1983’ which I watched during my stay at Akola (1983-1985).

I didn’t like the songs from ‘Mawaali-1983’. I liked one or two songs from ‘Justice Chaudhary-1983’. I did not watch these movies.

During 1983-85 when I was studying in 11th-12th standard disco music was ruling the charts in India. But I was more inclined to the golden era of HFM then and Rajesh Khanna movies, so I lost the track of many Bappi Lahiri songs and may be even not liking some of them.

However, I like one or two songs from some of the Rajesh Khanna movies where Bappi Lahiri composed the music for them and which were released from 1984-1984 onwards.
In between during this decade i.e. 1981-1990 and onwards 1990 there are movies where I like some of the songs from the movies where Bappi Lahiri had composed the music for. But I am not listing them here all (and maybe I will be taking them in my posts in future on Bappi Da 😊).

So, for this post when I decided to present this song from the 1980 movie ‘Saboot’ I just thought to a look on the movies released in the decade of 1971-1980 and of which the music was composed by Bappi Lahiri.

During the preparation of this list I came across many movies of this period when Bappi Da had created some musical gems, that failed to get popular as the movies failed at the box office. The song under discussion is a case in example. I also realized that I liked many of his songs but I may not have given that much attention to the songs composed by him before the ‘disco era’ or even after ‘1985-1986’.

Like, when I came a across the movie name ‘Ek Ladki Badnaam Si’ which was not released, and looked for its songs, I found that already one of its songs has been posted in a detailed post on Bappi Lahiri by Sudhir ji here.

So, instead of going into the other details I will come back to the list of movies where Bappi Lahiri has given music in the decade 1971-1980 starting in 1973 with ‘Nanhaa Shikaari’. Incidentally this movie was introduced on the blog by ‘yours junior’ 🙂 only.

(Also, I got an opportunity to introduce movies ‘Paapi-1977’, ‘Ek Baar Kaho-1980’, ‘Patitaa-1980’ earlier on the blog 🙂 )

‘Saboot-1980’ was directed Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay for ‘The Bharat Pictures, Madras’

It was presented by Abbasi Brothers. It was produced by Raaj Baweja and G.H. Navani.

It had Navin Nischol, Vidya Sinha, Kaajal Kiran, Om Shivpuri and Prem Chopra.

Vinod Mehra makes a friendly appearance in this movie.

While the other cast includes Padma Khanna, Rajendranath, Paintal, Narendranath, Mohan Sherry, Sudhir Dalvi, Amar Mrudulla, Roopesh Kumar, Gauri Varma, Maruti, Mohan Choti, Trilok Kapoor, Rajkishore, Raj Mehra, Darshan, Rajan Kapoor, Sunder Tinea, Moolchand, Sheikh, Jugnu, Birbal, Albela, Azad.

Story of this movie was written by J.K. Ahuja, and Omar Khayyam Saharanpuri wrote the dialogues. Screenplay was written by Kumar Ramsay.

Bal Korde was the editor of this movie and Shyam Ramsay was his co-editor.

This movie had total five songs (including one multiple version song) written by Amit Khanna. Music was composed by Bappi Lahiri.

Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Amit Kumar, Bappi Lahiri gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.02.1980 with restricted viewing certificate.

With today’s song ‘Saboot-1980’ makes its debut on the blog.

There is one more song in this movie ‘Jeena bhi koi jeena hai, jab tak tera saath nahin’ which sounds familiar to me and I listened to it and liked it too. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar and is multiple version song.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song where in Kaajal Kiran is lip syncing to Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. The song is picturised on Kaajal Kiran and Navin Nischol who seems to be a little hesitant first to the invitation from Kaajal Kiran, but surrenders in the end of the song.
Kajal Kiran or Sunita Kulkarni (her real name) which I became aware only recently celebrated her sixty-first birth anniversary on 18th October (born on 18.10.1958).
She became famous with her debut in ‘Ham Kisise Kam Nahin-1977’. And after that went on to act in many movies but none of them got the level of ‘Ham Kisise Kam Nahin’. And very few of them were successful to an extent. She retired from the movie scene in around end eighties.

Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay the famous of the seven Ramsay brothers jointly directed this movie. F.U. Ramsay the famous Producer was their father.
Kumar Ramsay, Keshu Ramsay, Arjun Ramsay, Gangu Ramsay and Kiran Ramsay are the other five brothers among the seven Ramsay brothers.
They mainly produced and directed ‘Horror’ movies starting with ‘Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche-1972’.

Tulsi Ramsay (born on 29th July’1944) passed away last year on 13th December 2018. He directed many movies and also Producer, Production Designer and Writer.
Shyam Ramsay (born on 17.05.1952) who passed away recently on 18th September 2019 was also director of many movies other than that he was also Producer, editor and writer for many movies.
I think both of them also jointly directed many movies or many movies had the director name as ‘Ramsay Brothers’. I am not mentioning more about the films they produced or directed, because that will require another detailed post.

Coming back to today’s song, the lyrics are by Amit Khanna and music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. This lovely song is in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar…

The date today is 15 november 2019. It was on this day thirty years ago (on 15 november 1989) that Sachin Tendulkar made his test debut. By a remarkable coincidence, it was on this day fifty years ago (viz on 15 november 1969) that Gundappa Vishwanath made his test debut as well.

A test match is being played today (15 november 2019) by India at Indore. It was while watching this match that I became aware that it was exactly thirty and fifty years ago that two Indian batting legends made their test debuts.

These batting legends enhanced the stature of Indian batting. Seeing their batting, lots of batting talents came up in India. If today Indian batting is regarded as the strongest among all test playing nations then Gundappa Vishwanath and Sachin Tendulkar have played inspirational and important roles in that. It was appropriate that Indian batsmen “celebrated” the occasion by dishing out a memorable batting performance today- they hammered 406 runs in one day of test cricket. Last one hour saw more than one hundred runs being scored as T20 rate.

This occasion needs to be celebrated in the blog too, with a suitable song. While searching for a suitable song, I became aware that “Awwal Number”(1990) was a movie that centered around cricket.

“Awwal Number”(1990) was produced and directed by Dev Anand. This movie had Dev Anand, Aamir Khan, Aditya Pancholi, Neeta Puri, Ekta, Sudhir Pandey, Vikram Gokhale, Parikshat Sahni, Ram Mohan, Anjan Srivastava, Bharat Bhushan, Birbal, Sameer Khakkar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raj Kishore, Manmouji, Mac Mohan, Asha Sharma, Subbiraj, Ajit Vachchani, Aftab Shivdasani etc in it.

I was aware about the movie, but I was not aware that this movie was about cricket. It was not only about cricket, it even had a song about cricket. Just what the doctor ordered, as Ravi Shashstri, in his commentating avatar would have said.

Here is this song. It is sung by Udit Narayan, Amit Kumar and Bappi Lahiri. Amit Khanna is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

With this song, “Awwal Number”(1990) makes its debut in the blog.

Thanks to Prakashchandra, I have been able to watch the video of this song. The picturisation shows that this song is picturised on Dev Anand (lip syncing in Bappi Lahiri’s voice), Aditya Pancholi (Amit Kumar’s voice) and Aamir Khan (Udit Narayan’s voice).

Hullo to Atuldom

Its been a few weeks since I wrote a post. I have missed the birthdates of a few of my favourites. I won’t put the blame of these misses on the festival season as then we will have to excuse Atulji his numerous blank dates on the blog which we don’t do; we expect at least one post per day from him.

I get notifications on my mailbox from one of the many music compilation sites which I had stumbled upon a few years ago. I don’t open mail notifications that often specially from this site but today I did. It had songs which I had not heard in years. Today’s list began with the song “my name is Suzy” from “An Evening in Paris” and then played a few numbers in various genres.

One of the songs made me sit up. I had never heard this song which was in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. I quickly googled for it and found that it was a song penned by Amit Khanna and Bappi Lahiri was the composer. And no, it was not a disco song or nor was it what we generally expect from the Bappi Lahiri baton. I heard it twice and then went looking for its video. I had another shock. It was picturised on Helen and no it was not a typical Helen-style item or cabaret. The expressions she gave in that song reminded me of another Helen- Bappi Lahiri song.

All this put me on a search mode for the details of the song which I heard today. One thing it did was remind me of the song from “Paanch Qaidi”- “Jeena to hai par ae dil kahaan”. But here are the details of the song- it is from a movie called “Josh” which was released in 1981. It starred Vidya Sinha, Helen, Sarika, Sheetal, Amjad Khan, Anil Dhawan, Raj Kiran, Deven Verma, Shakti Kapoor etc. The movie was directed by Raj Sippy. It was his second film after “Inkaar”. The common factor in the two movies being Amjad Khan, Vidya Sinha, Helen and Gurbachan. From what I read about the movie on IMDB.com Amjad Khan played a central character and Vidya Sinha had a role which was different from what she was known to play. If the movie had been successful, we would have had all the main actors in “Hatke” roles but that was not to be.

After hearing the song, I remembered that November 21st was the birthday of our dear Helen. She turned 81 yesterday (21 october 2019). Here is wishing her a healthy life with all her friends and dear ones around her. Here is the song which I liked hope all the followers of the blog like it too.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Disclaimer: Thoughts presented in this song are not the thoughts of the author of this post. It is just a tool in the hands of the filmmaker to take the story of the film forward and explain why the central character professes ‘bachelorhood’. Readers are requested to enjoy the song

“Man Pasand” (1980 – censored on 26-6-1980 and released on 11-7-1980) was among the first few movies whose music cassette was purchased by my father along with “Yaarana” when they hit the market. And since then I am a huge fan of their songs. Know almost all of them by heart.

This was a movie produced by Amit Khanna and directed by Basu Chatterji. Rajesh Roshan was the music director and Amit Khanna himself wrote the lyrics. The movie itself was inspired by the famous stage play by George Bernad Shaw – ‘Pygmalion’ (first published in 1913), and also on the hugely popular iconic film ‘My Fair Lady’ (1964 – Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn). The movie stars Dev Anand, Tina Munim, Girish Karnad, Simple Kapadia, Leela Mishra and Mehmood.

The movie has Dev Anand and Girish Karnad playing best friends, bachelors and musicologists. They encounter a loud- and foul-mouthed vendor of ‘datun’ (neem branches} in the late-night local trains of Mumbai. Then and there Dev (Pratap) throws a challenge that he can transform the unpolished girl into a graceful and talented singer and Karnad (Kashinath) picks up the bet and agrees to marry the girl if Pratap is successful.

Today’s song happens when Kamli (Tina Munim) walks into the flat of Pratap, to be trained as a singer. That is her only aim and she doesn’t know that the two friends have other plans. Prior to the song Pratap tries to explain to Kashi that no one knows what their “marzi” is, whether it is a man or a woman. But once people get married they start trying to make the spouses dance to their “marzi”. That is the gist of the song.

Let us enjoy this lively Kishore Kumar number today on Dev Anand’s birth anniversary. He would have been 95. Dev Anand who was an entertainer from 1946 to 2011 almost 65 years. Dev Anand who was an actor, producer director. A heart throb of the audiences who loved his smile (crooked teeth notwithstanding) sparkling eyes, scarfs, caps and mufflers and all the things that made up DEV ANAND.

Song – Manmaani Se Hargiz Na Daro (Man Pasand) (1980) Singer – Kishore Kumar, Lyrics – Amit Khanna, MD – Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics

hmmm
man maani se hargiz na daro,
kabhi shaadi na karo
man maani se hargiz na daro,
kabhi shaadi na karo

marzi hai
arre aaj kahin
baahar khaana khaayen
wo kahengi
nahin sahab theek aath baje
ghar wapas aa jaayen

kitaab liye haath me in
aap chain se baithe hain
memsaab poochengi
kyunji hamse roothe hai

kabhi kisi bhi naari se kar lo
do baatein
wo kahen inhi se hoti hai kya
chhup ke mulaqaaten
aji tauba bewakoofi ki hai shaadi inteha
har aurat apna soche
auron ki nahi parvaah
kyon theek nahin kaha maine
jo ji mein aaye wo karo
kabhi shaadi na karo
man maani se hargiz na daro
kabhi shaadi na karo

zara sochiye
aaram se aap ye
jeewan jee rahe hain
pasand ka kha rahe
pasand ka pi rahe hain
achcha bhala ghar hai aapka
lekin kya karen
aap se juda hai shauk
begum sahab ka
aate hi kahen suniye ji
har cheez ko badlo
pehle parde phir sofa
phir apna huliya badlo
aji maana tanhaai se
kabhi dil ghabraayega
jeewan saathi ki zaroorat
mehsoos karaayega
ha ha
lekin is ghabaraahat me jo shadi kar baithe
wo umr bhar pachhataayega
jeete ji arey bhai na maro
kabhi shadi na karo
man maani se hargiz na daro
kabhi shaadi
ho kabhi shaadi,
haan kabhi shaadi
na baaba na

Hullo to all Atulwaasis

So, we are on that date of the year when we write a special post for a very special person. We have two posts by kids of the 70s who grew up listening to the works of this special person. For once I waited to see what these two are going to say before I pen my own thoughts. This is because I have come to realise that the three of us love the same things about this person- his multi talents- singing (first and foremost), comedy (acting), direction, music direction and he has also written a few songs. We are his fans and he was said to be a huge fan of K.L. Saigal. His aim was to sing like Saigal.
