Main Bangali chhokra koru pyaar ko nomoskaaram

Posted on: December 4, 2008

Here is an awesome comedy cum romantic song from exactly 50 years ago. It is one song that richly deserves to be brought to the notice of Bollywood music fans.

The song is sung superbly by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Kishore Kumar sings for himself and Asha Bhonsle sings for Padmini. Kishore Kumar plays a Bangali ( which he was) and Padmini a Madrasi ( which she was). Incidentally, these terms Bangali and Madrasi, if used today in a song would be considered politically incorrect. But in those days, such terms were actually in use. Everyone south of Maharashtra was considered a Madrasi by North Indians, whereas South Indians had difficulty differentiating between a Punjabi and Bangali. Moreover, those days we had states called Madras, Bombay etc. These days, not only have the names of these states changed, they have been divided into many different states with their own identities. Even Madras and Bombay have undergone change of nomenclature.

Coming to the song itself, it is a nice, funny and lovely song. A South Indian girl and a Bengali boy are in love with each other, but the difference in their backgrounds is obviously not a trifling matter. Both have their own points of view on various matters.

The cute thing about this song is that it is the lady who seems to take the initiative and not the boy in professing one love, and it is the boy who is playing coy.

The song is full of stereotypical references about Bangalis and Madrasis, including the way that the two are dressed, but all that is in light hearted vein. It is to be noted that neither the music director ( O P Nayyar) nor the lyricist (Qamar Jalalabadi) had Bengali or South Indian backgrounds, still they have come up with a few Bangla and Tamil words in the song, aimed at providing some light humour.

And I love the picturisation. Padmini chasing Kishore Kumar around the playground is funny as well as romantic. And come to think of it, a song like this, despite its political incorrectness, spreads the message of national integration, what with two people of diverse backgrounds getting attracted towards each other in the song.

Great song! However, the line “luthir upor pode gaal” is actually “luchir upor pore daal” – luchi being the Bengali equivalent of poori.

Thanks for pointing out the corrections, Caesar. I have corrected the line now.

My goodness what a collection. Lots & Lots of thanks to you ATUL ( it means invaluable). How I was missing my old days of school and college when we were mad for all these songs. It is sweet surprise to find my one of most favorite song of those days. No match to these melodies. Keep it up my friend.
