Yoon hi tum mujhse baat karti ho

Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz star in this movie. Rajesh Khanna in fact has a double role in this movie. This movie was released in 1970 when everything that Rajesh Khanna touched turned to gold.
The fact that music in his movies was always top class helped in the success of his movies.
Now, when an actor plays double role, he is supposed to look different in these two roles. I have seen movies in which the two looked indistinguishable from each other including hairstyle and mannerisms. Still we the audience are made to believe that one is Ram and other is Shyam.
Some producers try and make the two characters look different. Often this difference is nothing more than absence/ presence of a mole, absence / presence of a thin moustache etc. But that is atleast a beginning.
I have already posted a few songs from this movie which were picturised on Rajesh Khanna and sung by Kishore Kumar. This particular song is also picturised on Rajesh Khanna but it is sung by Rafi. Good, I am happy that the producer is making the two Rajesh Khanna’s in the movie sing in different voices to differentiate between the two.
Well, my happiness is shortlived when I find out that the producer of this movie is none other than Manmohan Desai. So I double checked and my doubts were confirmed. The Character who sings “meri pyaari bahaniya banegi dulhaniya” in Kishore Kumar’s voice is the same character who is singing this song in Rafi’s voice.
Give Manmohan Desai a break, did I hear ? OK, OK, I give him a break, because both singers have sung some excellent songs in this movie. Moreover, this song has Mumtaz too, singing in Lata’s voice,so I have further reason not to press the matter.

Song-Yoon hi tum mujhse baat karti ho (Sacha Jhootha ) (1970) Singer- Rafi, Lata, Lyrics- Indeewar, MD- Kalyanji Anandji
Lyrics
yoonhi tum mujhse baat karti ho
yoonhi tum mujhse baat karti ho
yaa koyi pyaar kaa iraadaa hai
adaayen dil ki jaanataa hi nahin
adaayen dil ki jaanataa hi nahin
meraa hamdam bhi kitnaa saadaa hai
yoonhi tum mujhse baat karti ho
roz aati ho tum khayaalon mein
roz aati ho tum khayaalon mein
zindagi mein bhi meri aa jaao
beet jaaye na ye sawaalon mein
is jawaani pe kuchh taras khaao
haal-e-dil samjho sanam
haal-e-dil samjho sanam
kahenge munh se na ham
hamaari bhi koyi maryaadaa hai,
adaayen dil ki jaanataa hi nahin
mera hamdam bhi kitna saada hai
yoonhi tum mujhse baat karti ho
bholepan mein hai wafaa ki khushboo
bholepan mein hai wafaa ki khushboo
uspe sab kuchh na kyun lutaaun main
meraa betaab dil ye kahtaa hai
tere saaye se lipat jaaun main
mujhse ye mel teraa
mujhse ye mel teraa
na ho ik khel teraa
ye karam mujhpe kuchh ziyaadaa hai,
yoonhi tum mujhse baat karti ho
ya koyi pyaar ka iraada hai
adaayen dil ki jaanta hi nahin…
ban gayi ho meri sadaa ke liye
ban gayi ho meri sadaa ke liye
yaa mujhe yoon hi tum banaati ho
kahin baahon mein na bhar loon tumko
kyun mere hausle badhaati ho
hausle aur karo
hausle aur karo, faasla se na daro
dil na todenge apnaa waadaa hai,
yoonhi tum mujhse baat karti ho
ya koyi pyaar ka iraada hai
adaayen dil ki jaanta hi nahin
mera hamdam bhi kitna saada hai
yoonhi tum mujhse baat karti ho
Translation
Will you only talk with me,
or do you have any romantic intentions as well ?
He cannot read my mind
my darling is so naive
You come into my thoughts everyday
Why don’t you come into my life as well
Don’t let time go waste
do something about it
Try to guess my feelings
I need not spell out everthing to you
I have some vanity
he cannot read my mind
my darling is so naive
Your innocence could mean you can be trusted
and that tempts me to take the plunge
My desperate heart would like me to fall head over heels for you
But then I wonder if your intimacy could be a ruse
your closeness with me looks suspicious to me
he cannot read my mind
my darling is so naive
You have decided to throw your lot with me
Or are you just trying to play with my sentiments
I may grab you in my embrace
the way you are encouraging me
Get encouraged, dont be afraid of distance
I promise not to break your heart
Will you only talk with me,
or do you have any romantic intentions as well ?
He cannot read my mind
my darling is so naive

Geat song and great film. All the songs in the film were and are still very popular. Kalyanji Anandji always delivered for him!
Kaka won the Filmfare Best Actor Award for this and recent opinion is that the award was well deserved, this was one of his most “understated and underrated” performances. At that time many thought Sanjeev Kumar should’ve got it for Khilona that year (which I haven’t seen by the way).
I don’t know if you’ve come across this before by Rafi fans on Kaka’s and Rafi’s songs but here is the link to it. The comments section is predictably quite fiery!

Ek dum sahi baat Atul. How boring would it be if there was only one person that one enjoyed. But this divide between Kishore and Rafi fans is really really ‘gehra’ apparently 🙂 Kyon?

Wonderful song ..Great Lyrics by Indeewar….
Atulji, i was wondering if you could differentiate the portion that Lata sings from Rafi’s in the translation section like you do nowadays using different font colors….It will add to the fervor… 🙂

Atul,
I had seen Sachcha Jhootha when it was released. Vinod Doshi was the producer of this film along with Neeraj Desai ( may be some relation of Manmohan Desai). It was a surprise for me when I saw in the credit titles of film, the name of Viinod Doshi as producer. Till then, I was aware of him as the Chairman of Premier Automobile Limited. There were further surprise for me when I saw him playing the character actor’s role in Kalyug (1981) and in Chashme Buddur (1981).

Yes, we must always give MD a break; he gave us so many many many hours of crazy (and some sane) entertainment 🙂 Love the songs from this film, love the film too.
Thanks.
