“Razia Sultan”, the Kamal Amrohi movie made on the only female emperor to rule Delhi, had some very nice ( and different ) songs.
Kamal Amrohi decided that Yakut, the black slave ( played by Dharmendra) too needed to sing songs. Unlike the safe option of getting songs recorded in the voice of usual singers, Kamal Amrohi searched far and wide for a non profesional singer who could do justice to the personality of Yakut. And the singer who got chosen was Kabban Mirza.
Kabban Mirza was an announcer in Vividh Bharati ( music channel of All India Radio), Bombay and his deep, booming voice set him apart from other announcers.
Kabban Mirza sang two songs in “Razia Sultan”. One song was “aayi zanjeer ki jhankaar Khuda khair kare”, which has been posted in this blog already.
The other song sung by him in this movie was ” tera hijr mera naseeb hai”.
The lyrics contains words that are of Urdu/Persian and may not be familiar to many. But they are very concise and appropriate words to express the feeling of Yakut. Once I got the meanings of the difficult words, meaning of the esoteric sounding lyrics became reasonably clear. This is one song which needs to be translated for better appreciation of the beauty of this song. And it is an extremely beautiful song, once we understand the meaning of the words.

Even the fans who are fluent in Hindi need translation of this song to understand this song. Words like “hijr”, “hayaat”, “harf” and “vasl” make it a difficult song to understand. That is why I felt that this song needed to be translated.

Kabban Mirza sang one more song in the same movie, as I have already mentioned above.
He may have sung some non filmy songs as well.

The translation of the first stanza is a little different IMHO

I believe Neeti is right. Couldn’t agree more, her version is the proper translation of the first stanza.
This is my version for khuda khair kare (“aayee zanjeer ki jhankaar”), specially for Neeti.

“Tera Hijr mera naseeb hai” translation is excellent.
But there is scope for change in interpretation ;
“mujhe Khaufe duniyaa nahin
magar mere ruu-ba-ruu teri zaat hai ”
“Not that I am scared of the society (social environment)
But my whole concern is the sanctity of your persona”
The usage of “zaat” here means entity/existence.

the voice of kabban mirza suited very well to the muscular,rustic,slave (yakut)dharmendra who was helplessely in love with razia(hema).

Atul, thank you so much for this wonderful translation. This is one of my most favourite song. I think Kabban Mirza’s voice is so hauting. I can listen to this song over and over again. ti is a shame he has only sung two songs, as I would have love to listen to more of his songs. The meaning of this song is very special to me. Reminds me of good old days.
