When two people fall in love, it is the boy that is traditionally supposed to take the initiative and the girl has to wait for that initiative to come, which often never comes, if the boy is someone like Amol Palekar in Bollywood movies of 1970s.
Then what should the girl do ? Instead of waiting interminably like Meena Kumari and Nutan in 1960 movies, the girl needs to be more pro active. And Rekha is seen taking the initiative in this song where she has decided to write a love letter to Jeetendra, which falls from her book and Jeetendra gets it.
And that finally enables the ice to be broken, and the barrier of diffidence between the two is gone. And once that barrier is gone, they are free to express their love for each other openly. And I love it that it the girl who is falling head over heals over the boy in this song more than the boy.
After I watched this picturisation, this song, which till then was an anonymous Rafi, Lata duet from 1970s, has become a memorable duet from “Anokhi Ada” (1973) for me. This movie also had a wonderful “qawwali” called “haal kya hai dilon ka na poocho sanam” sung by Kishore ( and already posted in this blog).
As I mentioned earlier, I liked the picturisation of this song. It is a lovely picturisation that I can watch any number of times.
