Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Mere dil mein aaj kya hai

Posted on: January 7, 2009

Bollywood movies have songs on a large number of subjects.

One important subject is love. Most songs have words like “pyaar”, “muhabbat”, “ishq” “prem” etc mentioned in their lyrics. Still I cannot help feel that love is often trivialised in Bollywood songs. Immature looking actors are seen singing immature songs about love. Even otherwise, love songs are often used as nothing more than an opportunity to dance around trees or in the open spaces, changing dresses every few seconds.

So it comes as a breath of fresh air when the subject of love is treated with sensitivity.

One very important phase of love is to propose. In this song, the hero is proposing to the heroine. In fact, just before the song, the lady, Sharmila, acting naive, says that she did not know what Rajesh Khanna was talking about. And then Rajesh Khanna breaks into this song, explaining to her what it was that he was talking about.

And as it happens in Bollywood songs, the hero would not propose in a direct way, but would do so in a roundabout way,but dropping clearcut hints about what he wanted to say. And by the end of the song, the heroine, in true Bollywood style, indicated her acceptance of the advances made by Rajesh Khanna towards her.

It is a good song which has been picturised well. But I hope they could have done something about that handlebar moustache of Rajesh Khanna that he sports in this song.

Song-Mere dil me aaj kya hai (Daag) (1973) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

mere dil mein aaj kyaa hai
tu kahe to main bataa doon
mere dil mein aaj kyaa hai
tu kahe to main bataa doon
teri zulf phir sawaaroon
teri maang phir sajaa doon
mere dil mein aaj kyaa hai
tu kahe to main bataa doon

mujhe devtaa banaakar, teri chaahaton ne poojaa
mujhe devtaa banaakar, teri chaahaton ne poojaa
meraa pyaar kah rahaa hai,
main tujhe khudaa banaa doon
meraa pyaar kah rahaa hai,
main tujhe khudaa banaa doon
mere dil mein aaj kyaa hai
tu kahe to main bataa doon

koyi dhoondhne bhi aaye, to hamen naa dhoondh paaye
koyi dhoondhne bhi aaye, to hamen naa dhoondh paaye
tu mujhe kahin chhupaa de,
main tujhe kahin chhupaa doon
tu mujhe kahin chhupaa de,
main tujhe kahin chhupaa doon
meraa pyaar kah rahaa hai,
main tujhe khudaa banaa doon

mere baazuon me aakar, teraa dard chain paaye
mere baazuon me aakar, teraa dard chain paaye
tere gesuon me chhupkar,
main jahaan ke gham bhulaa doon
tere gesuon me chhupkar,
main jahaan ke gham bhulaa doon
teri zulf phir sawaaroon
teri maang phir sajaa doon
mere dil mein aaj kyaa hai
tu kahe to main bataa doon

This is a beautiful song, with really good lyrics. I saw this movie a long time back, in my Rajesh Khanna phase, and I think the reason for his handle bar mustache is that he has been presumed dead or some such thing, but actually he is alive and married to Raakhee now. That is why Sharmila is in white, thinking he is dead, and he is talking of “teri maang phir sajaa doon … ” etc.

The reason he has a handle bar moustache is IMO because he is supposed to be an army man in this particular part of the movie.
This is Hindi film’s way of making Rajesh look macho. Otherwise he would look too “chikna” to be taken seriously as an army man. 🙂

No, no he wasn’t in the army, he was the manager of the vast landholdings of his father-in-law which he would presumably inherit later. Lalitha has the story right 🙂 Actually, it’s a rather good film, very early Yash Chopra. All the songs were great. Pyarelal had the following to say about Rajesh and this song (the link to the original is at the end).

“He was very particular about his music and would take a tape home if he could not assess a song. He would then give his feedback after a day or two. But if he liked a song at the sitting, he would loudly shout “Wah! Wah!” in appreciation. After he heard the mukhda of Mere dil mein aaj kya hai from Daag he stopped us from making him listen to the first antara and told Yash (Chopra)ji that it would be a hit!”
