When I got this song as farmaish, I wondered which song it was. I was sure I had never heard this song.
When I finally managed to locate it and listened to it, I could recall having heard this song. It is just that I was not aware that “ponch kar ashq” were the starting words of this song.
I was not much aware about the movie “Naya Raasta” either. Now I know that it was a 1970 movie with Jeetendra and Asha Parekh in lead roles. This is an inspirational song that Jeetendra sings and inspires Asha Parekh to wipe off her ashq (tears) and smile.
Rafi has sung this song wonderfully well. And the lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi are so beautiful. The big surprise is the music director. It is not one of the big names, but it is N Dutta. Now, I have heard about N Dutta, but I was not sure that he was active in 1970 as well. Prolific he may not have been, but N Dutta was a well respected music director of 1950s and 60s.
This song did not figure among the top songs of 1970. To think that a song of this calibre could not figure anywhere in the contention of top songs gives us some idea about the quality of songs in those days. Or may be not. I recall that the songs of “Dastak” ( winner of national award for best music direction) too were nowhere in contention among popular songs.
By now I have learnt to appreciate a song for its own quality, and not because how it fared in the popularity stakes. And that is how I have been able to unearth many forgotten gems.
This song is undoubtedly one such gem. I thank Raja whose farmaish for this song enabled me to listen to this forgotten song again after so many decades.

I am sure this would have been quite difficult to locate.
I myself searched for it for a while but did not succeed. Got another made-up video but not the original.
Lovely song, isn’t it ? Especially the lyrics are really good and inspirational. Aakhir Sahir.
