Aapse pyaar hua aap khafa ho baithe

Posted on: January 29, 2009

I have talked about Rafi singing brilliant songs for Shammi Kapoor. This led to many imitators, who would make Shammi Kapoor movies by signing up Shammi Kapoor clones. Thus we had actors like Joy Mukherjee, Vishwajeet etc who had reasonably successful careeres playing Shammi Kapoor type roles.

Though the producers of these movies could not afford Shammi Kapoor, they could afford Rafi, who was known to encourage just about any producers/ music directors however broke they may be. Though Rafi sang this songs literally for peanuts, he would give these songs his all, and these Rafi songs would sound just as good as any Rafi-Shammi songs.

Rafi sang for Shammi Kapoor, for his clone (Joy Mukherjee) as well as for poor man’s Shammi Kapoor (Vishwajeet). There were other categories too. Viz. there was Sujit Kumar (poor man’s Vishwajeet).

Scraping the bottom of the barrel further, there were poor man’s poor man’s poor man’s Shammi Kapoor’s as well, and Rafi sang brilliant Shammi Kapoor style songs for them also.

For instance Aabroo was one such movie whose producers were so broke that they signed up newcomers hoping that they would create Shammi Kapor style magic. Sonik Omi, the music director duo created sensational song in this movie, but considering the quality ( lack thereof) of the actors, all their efforts went in vain as far as the movie was concerened.

But what amazing songs this movie had. Here is a Rafi song picturised on the hero. “Aapse pyaar hua aap khafa ho baithe” would have been an immortal song by now, had it been picturised on Shammi Kapoor. But that was not to be. Deepak Kumar was nowhere in the same calibre. Deepak Kumar and Vimmi were the actors on which this wonderful song got wasted.

Nevertheless, what a an amazing song Rafi has sung ! It is a great song that was created for a forgettable movie.
PS-It turns out that this song has a female version too, which is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Only the audio of this female version appears to be available.

Song-Aapse pyaar hua (Aabroo) (1968 ) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-G L Rawal, MD-Sonik Omi

Lyrics

Aapse pyaar hua, aap khafa ho baithe
milke baithe bhi na the aur judaa
haay judaa ho baithe
Aapse pyaar hua, aap khafa ho baithe
milke baithe bhi na the aur judaa
haay judaa ho baithe
Aapse pyaar hua

ho haay
saans leti ho to kya kahar ki loo chalti hai
saans leti ho to kya kahar ki loo chalti hai
yoon ye kahti hai koyi dil ki si shai jalti hai
koyi dil ki si shai jalti hai
surkh sholay ki tarah
surkh sholay ki tarah aap ye kyaa ho baithe
milke baithe bhi na the aur judaa
haay judaa ho baithe
Aapse pyaar hua

josh pe husn kaa toofan nazar aata hai
josh pe husn kaa toofan nazar aata hai
ishq ki maut ka saamaan nazar aata hai
saamaan nazar aata hai
aur kashti se kinaare
aur kashti se kinaare bhi khafaa ho baithe
milke baithe bhi na the aur judaa
haay judaa ho baithe
Aapse pyaar hua

ho haay
har nazar teer sahi dekhiye ik baar hamen
har nazar teer sahi dekhiye ik baar hamen
marna taqdeer sahi maut se hai pyaar hamen
ab maut se hai pyaar hamen

khenchiye yoon na kamaan
khenchiye yoon na kamaan teer khata ho baithe
milke baithe bhi na the aur judaa
haay judaa ho baithe
Aapse pyaar hua aap khafa ho baithe
milke baithe bhi na the aur judaa
haay judaa ho baithe
Aapse pyaar hua

If I hadn’t seen the video. I would have imagined this song was being sung by Shammi or one of his clones. I have never heard this song before, but it sounds like any one of Shammi’s songs, so maybe that could be the key to Sonik Omi’s failure to make it big. They did not stamp their own individual style on their songs.

Thanks for discovering these songs, and for telling us about their directors, which I had never known until now. In fact, I don’t think I had ever thought too much about the MDs, except for some like SJ, SDB, RDB, OPN, Naushad and LP. You have got me thinking and looking up old songs by MM and others now.

Lovely song. Thanks Atul.

It is not Sonik Omi’s fault that this movie did not do well. I saw this movie only a few weeks ago. I tell you it has a very decent storyline. Lovely scenery of Kashmir. Lovely songs too.

So it must have taken really really bad acting/directing to pull this movie down. And that is what it is. I found both Deepak Kumar and Vimi really bad. Esp Deepak Kumar. It was like he had mugged up his lines and was just reciting them. No proper dialogue delivery, no proper expressions….

As Jagdeep (or was it Asrani in Sholay) would have said “Pata nahin kahan kahan se aa jaate hain…” 🙂

Lalitha, Sonik Omi has given outstanding music in many movies- Dil ne phir yaad kiya, Aabroo, Mahua, Bhai ho to aisa etc.

It is just that they did not get enough credit and opportunities.

They were assistants to many established music directors. And in fact, they may have been the actual creator of many songs that bear the names of bigger music directors.

Raja, I agree with the Jagdeep observation “pata nahin kahan kahan se aa jaate hain…” as appropriate description of the lead actors of
“Aabroo”.

I had heard this song a number of times and always thought it was picturized on Dharmendra. Thanks for posting Atul.

Deepak Kumar was the son of one of the Rawal Brothers, the producers. Their next one was “Ladki Pasand Hai”

Nice song Atul. I see that there is also a female version of this song sung by Asha. Not able to find the youtube video though.
