For most people living outside Bombay, Bombay means movie actors. When I was first going to Bombay as a 11 year old kid, my school mates were convinced that I was going to meet Hema Malini there.
When I reached Bombay ( yes, it was still Bombay in 1970s), I realised that Bombay was not all showbiz. In fact, I learnt the word “jhuggi jhopdi” (Shanties) and slums for the first time then and there. I realised that a large number of people in Bombay come from other places and they live in slums.
People who live that way do not have many basic things that others living outside often take for granted. Look outside the trains coming to Mumbai at morning time and one will see lots of squatters squatting beside the railway track. Those who live in slums do not have attached bathrooms, that is for sure.
Not just slum dwellers, even many people who live in regular houses, are cramped for space. Often a dozen people live in the same room. This leads to situations which one could not imagine otherwise.
For instance, husband and wife do not find any kind of privacy. If they feel the urge for intimacy then they realise that there are many other pairs of eyes in the same room, pretending to be asleep, but trying to see what was going on. Just as people squatting on the track stop
bothering about the watching eyes, the couple too, after a stage stop giving a damn about what the others “sleeping” in the same room would see watching them in action.
Most Bollywood movies steer clear of showing such realities and instead concentrate on churning out movies with make believe story lines. But every now and then, some movie makers do make movies trying to highlight the lives of typical Bombay dwellers.
The movie “Piya Ka Ghar” was one such movie, which showed how many people live in the same room.
That includes a newly marries couple ( Anil Dhawan and Jaya Bhaduri). The man feels the urge to be with his wife at night, but the wife is obviously not uses to other eyes prying on them and resists his advances.
All this while, this wonderful Kishore Kumar song plays in the background. “Ye jeewan hai is jeewan ka yahi to hai rang roop” is an extremely beautifully sung song.

Atul, thanks to you posting this song, I rewatched Piya Ka Ghar yesterday; what a lovely movie with nothing OTT, just right!
Although I would have given a different ending.. SPOILER ALERT!! gone to live in that lovely village shown in the film :))

I just love this song.. and no one could have done better justice to its emotion than Kishore da. In fact, this was one of the songs that I played in my car earlier today and I come back home to find out that this movie has been yippeeeed today :). In Bombay, a 1000 sq ft house is a luxury. A city that just does not have time to worry :).
