Patli kamar hai tirchhi nazar hai

This song is a wonderful dance song. And when one looks at the year of picturisation (1949), one is bound to be impressed that a song and dance like this was picturised 60 years ago, when a picturisation like this certainly called for great imagination, since technology those days was far primitive.
This is a 5 minute long dance sequence, and the song begins only after two minutes when Premnath joins the dancer Cuckoo. The song Patli Kamar hai is sung by Premnath in Mukesh’s voice ( is it really Mukesh’s voice ?) It appears that the lady who is in love with Premnath is outside the hall watching Premnath dance with this lady dancer called Cuckoo. It is this lady outside who sings in the voice of Lata. So this song is a duet song in absentia, in the sense that the duo singing the song are not present in one place. In modern day, it would be called tele singing, I think. 😉 I do not know what it was called those days.
Premnath is almost a parallel hero in this movie. Raj Kapoor was a very good friend of Premnath and the Raj Kapoor would often go to Premnath’s house to discuss the movie. The real reason of course was that Raj Kapoor had his eyes on Premnath’s sister. And Raj Kapoor actually ended up marrying Krishna, Premnath’s sister. Yes, even those we knew as oldtimers had acted like lovelorn kids when then they were young.

patli kamar hai tirchhi nazar hai
patli kamar hai tirchhi nazar hai

aaja tera aankhon me ghar hai
aaja tera aankhon me ghar hai

ghoom ghoom har kali ko choomun

tumko dhoondun ban ban ghoomun
meri zindagi mast safar hai

patli kamar hai tirchi nazar hai
patli kamar hai tirchi nazar hai
aaa
aaja mere manchaahe baalam
aaja tera aankhon me ghar hai
aaja tera aankhon me ghar hai
tum bin nainon ki barsaaten
rok na paaun laakh manaaun
tum bin nainon ki barsaaten
rok na paaun laakh manaaun
main bahte dariya ka paani

khel kinaaron se badh jaaun
khel kinaaroon se badh jaaun
bandh na paaun
naya nagar nit nayi dagar hai
tirchi nazar hai patli kamar hai
aaja mere manchaahe baalam
aaja tera aankhon me ghar hai
aaja tera aankhon me ghar hai
hoy
patli kamar hai tirchi nazar hai
patli kamar hai tirchi nazar hai
hoy
hoy

The fact that they both wanted to compose music individually is an interesting trivia, which I was not aware of. And indeed Shankar Jaikishan were the most prolific music directors of all time, before Laxmikant Pyarelal overtook them.

Barsaat was the first composition of music maestros Shanker Jaikishen. Both wanted to compose music for the film individually but fate brought them togather.Composed music on a very old Austrian tune “Waves of Danube”. Composed music for scores of films there after and every song was a HIT, never seen in history of Bollywood for any other composer.
