Mujhe naulakha mangaade re O sainya deewaane

Posted on: February 2, 2009

It is a very long song, which is one second short of 10 minutes long. And the song is so nice to listen to that these 9:55 minutes pass in a trice. Initially Asha Bhonsle sings the song and towards the second half of the song, Kishore Kumar makes a cameo appearance.

The picturisation is typically Amitabh Bachchan. Jaya Prada is a dance performer, and she spurns Amitabh Bachchan’s amorous advances.

When she goes to perform on stage and the curtain opens, she expects to see a large gathering as all the tickets have been sold. But she instead finds just a single individual, viz Amitabh Bachchan seated in the hall. It turns out that Amitabh has bought all the tickets for the show for himself.

Jaya Prada is not amused at this vulgar show of one’s money power, but what is she to do. Since the show is sold out, she has to perform, and so she performs, singing this song “mujhe naulakha manga de O sainya deewaane”.

And as it turns out, she is only required to sing and dance for half the show. Amitabh Bachchan who has bought the show, himself joins in singing and dancing.

The lyrics are interesting and there is one line that has by now become the rationalisation for many people to drink. The line goes ” Nasha sharaab me hota to nachti botal” ( If there was intoxication in a drink then the bottle would have been seen dancing). How smart ! I am also thinking of writing a song that would go “Zahar saanp me hota to na hote koi naag” ( had the snakes been venomous, then no cobras could have survived).

Towards the end of the song, Amitabh Bachchan takes ghunghroos in one hand and starts striking the palm of the other hand with it. His devout spectators sitting in the front stall are so impressed with their hero, who they think is sheding his blood and thus displaying his love for the lady.

Like the front stall spectators, even the lady seems to have been fooled. She rushes in and does a quick first aid on Amitabh’s “injured” hand.

Thus, Amitabh Bachchan proves the old adage wrong which said that “money cannot buy you love”.

PS- If that was Amitabh’s blood, then I suggest he should undergo a blood transfusion and get some quality blood. Come on, the superstar of the millenium should not have blood that looked like cheap red coloured water that kids sprinkle over one another during holi festival and none of those kids claim to be bleeding afterwards.

Song-Mujhe naulakha mangaade re O sainya deewaane (Sharaabi) (1984) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Bappi Lahiri

Lyrics

ang ang tera rang rachaake aisaa karoon singaar
Jab jab jhaanjhar jhankaaun main
khanke man ke taar

aaa aaa
mujhe naulakha mangaade re
o sainya deewaane
mujhe naulakha mangaade re
o sainya deewaane

maathe pe jhoomar kaano me jhumka
paaon me payaliya
haathon me ho kangna
mujhe naulakha manga de o sainya deewane
tujhe main
tujhe main
tujhe gale se lagaa loongi o sainya deewane
mujhe angiya sila de o sainya deewane
tujhe main
tujhe main
tujhe seene se laga loongi o sainya deewane
mujhe naulakha manga de re o sainya deewaane

salma sitaron ki jhilmil chunariya
aaun pahan ke to fisle nazariya
mujhko sajaade balma
sajaade
mujhko sajaade balma
mori kunwaari ye kamsin umariya
tere liye naache sajke sanwariya
laali mangaa de sajna
suraj se laali mangaa de sajna
tujhe main
tujhe main
tujhe hothon se lagaa loongi o sainya deewane
tujhe hothon se lagaa loongi o sainya deewane

aaa aaa
main to saari umariya lutaaye baithi
balma do ankhiyon ki sharaarat mein
main to janmon ka sapna sajaaye baithi
sajna kho ke teri mohabbat mein
maana re maana ye ab maine maana
hota hai kya sainya dil ka lagaana
roke ye duniya ya roothe zamaana
jaana hai mujhko sajan ghar jaana
ho jaise kajra hanse jaise kajra hansegajra hanse
jaise gazra hanse jaise gazra hanse
waise ankhiyon me tum muskuraana
ho kirno se ye maang meri saja de
poonam ke chanda ki bindiya mangaade
tujhe main
tujhe main
tujhe maathe pe saja loongi
tujhe maathe pe sajaadoongi
mujhe naulakha mangaa de re o sainya deewane
tere kadmo me chhalka doongi main saare maikhaane

hmm hmm
dere na
log kahte hain main sharaabi hoon
log kahte hain main sharaabi hoon
tumne bhi shaayad yehi soch liya
haan
log kahte hain main sharaabi hoon

kisi pe husn ka guroor jawaani ka nasha
kisi ke dil pe muhabbat ki rawaani ka nasha
kisi ko dekh ke saanson se ubharta hai nasha
bina piye bhi kahin hadd se guzarta hai nasha
nashe me kaun nahin hai mujhe bataao jara
kise hai hosh mere saamne to laao zara
nasha hai sab pe magar rang nashe ka hai juda

khili khili huyi subah pe hai shabnam ka nasha
hawa pe khushboo ka baadal pe hai rimjhim ka nasha
kahin suroor hai khushiyon ka kahin gham ka nasha
nasha sharaab me hota to naachti botal
maikade jhoomte paimaano me hoti halchal
nasha sharaab me hota to naachti botal
nashe me kaun nahin hai mujhe bataao zara
nashe me kaun nahin hai mujhe bataao zara
log kahte hain main sharaabi hoon

thodi aankhon se pilaade re sajni deewani
thodi aankhon se pilaade re sajni deewani
tujhe main
tujhe main
tujhe saanson me basa loogaa sajni deewani
tujhe naulakha mangaa doongaa sajni deewani
tujhe naulakha mangaa doongaa sajni deewani
aaa aaa aaa aaa

I really enjoyed the post more than the music ….especially the lines ” had the snakes been venomous, then no cobras could have survived”.

When Kishore Kumar makes his entry in the song mid-way, it takes the song to a different level. Top class.

read this post for the first time today. why? because i had not yet encountered this wonderful blog on 9th february 2009. my loss.
“I am also thinking of writing a song that would go “Zahar saanp me hota to na hote koi naag” ( had the snakes been venomous, then no cobras could have survived).” wonderful thought.
i always thought that this song was trying to copy the mood of the “Muqqadar Ka Sikandar” song :- salaam-e-ishq meri jaan zara qubool kar lo.
MKS was the movie by Prakash Mehra from 1979

I too read this writeup after ten years and wondered if I myself had written it. I certainly possessed a creative imagination those days. 🙂
