Music director Ravi deserved much more credit than he actually received as a music director. I have mentioned it in the past that a large number of iconic songs from Bollywood movies are his creations. Just name the subject, and he has an iconic song or two on the subject.
Nothing demonstrates it better than “bidaai” songs. Which has been the most well known “bidaai” song of all time. “Babul ki duaayen leti ja”. Which is the most popular baaraat song- “aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai”, again a Ravi creation.
Ravi could come up with iconic songs not just with Rafi, but with singers of lesser abilities and range also. He has given quite a few iconic songs with Mahendra Kapoor, for instance.
Here is a “biddai” song composed by Ravi. It is sung by Mahendra Kapoor, and everyone will agree that this song is no less iconic a song than “babul ki duaayen leti jaa”. Wow ! What a song, and what a music director !
Rajinder Krishan has written the lyrics so wonderfully well. Picturisation was nice too. The movie is “Doli” (1969) and the song was picturised on Nazima and Prem Chopra. Yes, Prem Chopra plays the groom in this movie. Does he play a good guy in this movie by any chance. If not, then I fear for Nazima, the cautiously optimistic bride in this song. 😉
Oh yes, I remember now. He was singing a love song with Babita earlier in the movie and now he is seen getting married to Nazima.Poor bride !

Very good article and I agree great music composed by Ravi. I’m not good in Hindi so can someone please translate the true meaning of this song “Doli chadh ke dulhan sasuraal ? Thanks in advance.

Ravi’s songs though decent were mostly monotonous. In an age of Shankar Jaikishan, SD Burman, Roshan, Madan Mohan, Khayyam, Naushad, he was lower. Chtragupta and Ravi competed for attention from South producers.

Personally I do not like to compare artists and admire them for their own unique qualities. everyone was unique. I find that Ravi has created more iconic songs (for all genre)than any other music director. And he has created some awesome music if one only goes through the list of his songs.

आज तक डोली पर जितने भी गीत बने हैं, उनमें सभ से ज्यादा खूबसूरत गीत है यह,राजेंद्र कृष्ण जी के शब्दों में बहुत ही जादू है और रवि शर्मा जी ने बहुत ही खूबसूरत संगीत दिया है,चाहे पंडित रवि जी का कद उनके समकालीन संगीतकारों में उतना उंचा न भी रहा हो पर फिर भी उन्होने इस गीत को खूबसूरत बनाने में कोई भी कोर कसर बाकी नहीं रखी है,राजेंद्र कृष्ण जी के बारे में तो यह बात काफी प्रसिद्ध रही है कि वोह 5 मिनट में ही गीत लिख देते थे,आनंद बक्षी जी की तरह से ही
