When our dear Atul ji recently started an ‘innovative’ initiative under the ‘ten-year challenge’ or ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ I felt excited and browsed through some dates of February 2009 on the blog to check about the songs and the the movies which featured on these dates ten year back.

I also mentioned in my comments on the blog that I would try to contribute as possible for this ‘challenge’ too. However, since I already have few of my earlier articles to be finished and other topics on my list, I could not contribute much to it till now. But I can see few opportunities for me in the coming days of this month 🙂

When I checked the songs posted ten years back for February 9th, I find that all the movies that were represeted that day viz. ‘Kismat-1968’, ‘Jugnu-1973’, ‘Brahmachari-1968’, ‘Sadhna-1958’, ‘Udan Khatola-1955’, ‘Paapi-1953’ and ‘Badi Bahan-1949’ have already been Yippeeeed’ on the blog or all songs from these movies have been covered on the blog.

The name of this movie ‘Paapi-1953’ reminded me of ‘Paapi-1977’. Though I had not watched this movie ‘Paapi-1977’, its name had been in my vague memory since my childhood and whenever I had been going through HFGK Vol. V, I had always thought of presenting a song from this movie since it belongs to the ‘Seventies’. This would also serve my purpose of ‘introducing the movie with same titles’ on the blog.

On our blog we already have ‘Paapi-1943’ and ‘Paapi-1953’ launched earlier.

Today ‘Paapi-1977’ makes its debut on the blog …

‘Paapi-1977’ was produced and directed by O.P. Ralhan for his home productions ‘Ralhan Productions. Bombay’. O.P. Ralhan also wrote the story and screenplay of this movie. Dialogues of this movie were written by Qamar Jalalabadi. Editing for this movie was done by Vasant Borkar.

It had Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Zeenat Aman, Reena Roy, Prem Chopra, Padma Khanna, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, Durga Khote, Jagdish Raj, Jatin, Appi Umrani, Dhanraj, Tuntun, Moolchand, Baby Deepa, Rajan Kapoor, Master Vikas, and Alka with O.P. Ralhan, Kamaldeep, Rajnath, Sheela, Ratan Gaurang, Jawahar Kaul and others.

Danny Dengzongpa makes a special appearance in this movie. Hina Kausar, Manmohan Krishan, Kamal Kapoor, Nana Palsikar, Sudhir makes a guest appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.01.1977.

As per HFGK there are nine songs in this movie written by Naqsh Lyallpuri (five songs), Kulwant Jani (three songs) and Harindranath Chatopadhyay (one song). Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Ranu Mukherji and Miss Lorna had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by Bappi Lahiri. And on listening to few songs from this movie one may think of its composed by Pancham Da, same like the music of ‘Chhaila Babu-1977’ which was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal in R.D. Burman style 🙂
I do not remember it, but I don’t think that I had listened to any of the songs from this movie earlier. Except the song that I am presenting today which after listening sound somewhat familiar to me or may be which I had heard on radio earlier. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and lyrics are by Naqsh Lyallpuri.
Also, I think that the songs from this movie may have been forgotten and none of them became popular.

From the nine songs in this movie Lata Mangeshkar has sung as many as four solo songs in this movie. Rafi Saab had one solo, while Mahendra Kapoor had two solo songs, and Ranu Mukherji and Lorna had sung one duet song in this movie.

On listening few times this song grows and I like it too.

Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri as mentioned above.

Since I have not watched this movie, I can’t say much about it or the songs from this movie. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs. Though, going by the star-cast of this movie I think this must be an ‘entertaining’ and ‘interesting to watch’ movie…

6th October, he would have been 72. Life is such. It always, well almost, seems as if this was not the time to go. But this passage is such – no one has any say about it. One can only express emotions and reflect upon the loss. And then there are souls, people who are more close to heart than others. And the loss, the vacuum, seems to be bigger and deeper.

A person who once had declared that “. . . cricket, not films, is my first love”. At school, college and local club levels, he played a fair amount of good cricket, in the company of would be test players like Eknath Solkar and Budhi Kunderan. But then, he settled for a career in films, when he realized that he could never be a Vishwanath. [Author’s Note: These references are excerpted from an interview with Illustrated Weekly of India, in 1979.]

Born in 1946, he was not even a year old, when the family moved from Peshawar (now in Pakistan) to Bombay, when the partition happened in 1947. There was a temporary back and forth movement of the family between Bombay to Delhi (1957) and then back to Bombay (1960). Throughout his school and college days, he had a very normal progression of life, playing cricket and watching films. He aspired to be a cricketer, and also, he was enamoured by films.

As he stepped into his 20s, and completed his college education, a meeting with Sunil Dutt brought to him his break in films. Sunil Dutt was in preparation for his film ‘Mann Ka Meet’ (1968) which was intended to be a launch vehicle for Som Dutt, his younger brother`. Vinod played the a grey villain type role in this film. Some of his next few assignments followed in the same vein – supporting roles or villain’s roles – ‘Purab Aur Paschim’, ‘Aan Milo Sajna’, ‘Sachcha Jhootha’, ‘Mastana’ in 1970 and ‘Elaan’ and ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’ in 1971.

1971 is also the kind of firming-up an take-off year for Vinod. This year came his first film as an action hero in ‘Hum, Tum Aur Woh’. Also, this year was released the much acclaimed ‘Mere Apne’, produced and directed by Gulzar. A sensitive film about coming of age youngsters and the growing angst among the new generation, Vinod was cast in a strong lead role, challenged by another equally strong role of Shatrughan Sinha, the two heading competitor street gangs in a typical city in India.

Come 1973, and Gulzar cast him in the lead role in an off-beat theme on the commercial circuit – and a surprise songless film no less from this poet and film maker. ‘Achanak’ takes on where ‘Ye Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke’ (1963) faded out ten years earlier. Loosely connected with the famous/infamous Nanavati case (1959-61) from real life, the film takes off from the point where, in real life, the jury’s verdict of not guilty (at the Session Court level) was overturned by the Bombay High Court and awarded life imprisonment to the accused. The film was critically acclaimed – and so was the lead role played by Vinod.

Quite well considered as an established actor by this time, we see him in 1974, in the role of a college lecturer in ‘Imtihan’. A string of action films continues, far too many to be listed. I will follow him through the films that I actually viewed in that decade – ‘Aarop’ and ‘Haath Ki Safai’ in 1974, ‘Shaque’ and ‘Hera Pheri’ in 1976, ‘Parvarish’ in 1977, ‘Inkaar’ and ‘Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki’ in 1978, ‘Meera’ in 1979 and ‘The Burning Train’ in 1980. I am sure you will say I missed some. Yes, surely did. Just for a special mention – the highest grossers and the most popular films of their years – ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ in 1977, ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ in 1978 and ‘Qurbani’ in 1980. With a portfolio as the one sampled above, the career discussion is fully represented, even if we choose not to mention his films that came later.

His film career was punctuated between 1982 and 1986, when he took a self-imposed leave from his career and went to stay with Osho, or Guru Rajnish. But whatever the circumstances may have been, he returned to the industry in 1987, and just continued without a pause with his career.

Vinod Khanna passed away on 27th April last year (2017).

Remembering him on his birth anniversary, here is a lesser known, but a wonderfully performed song from the film ‘Aadha Din Aadhi Raat’ from 1977. The film is from the banner of Bharati International, Madras and is directed by Dhundi. The star cast includes Asha Parekh, Vinod Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Prem Chopra, Om Shivpuri, Jalal Agha, Jayshree T, Prem Bedi, TP Jain, Surendra Nath, Kirti Kumar, Pratima Devi, Vishu Raje, Makranee, Shobha Harman, Ranjeet, and Keshto Mukherjee etc.

The song is penned by Anand Bakshi and the music is by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. The scene is a party, ostensibly at the residence of Prem Chopra, in honor of a certain person / friend returning from abroad. It is apparent that Vinod Khanna is in disguise and masquerading as that friend of Prem Chopra. Shabana, who plays the role of Prem Chopra’s daughter, is offended at the wooing advances being made by this foreign returned gentleman whom she quite clearly does not fancy. The body language and the silent exchanges indicate that Prem Chopra is trying to make her stay on in the party, so possibly there is some business angle to this interaction also. And the presence of some dangerous looking characters in the party frame, indicates that the ‘business’ that Prem Chopra is pursuing is not really a good happy one.

Menewhile in the CSP (comic side plot), apparently the real ‘foreign returned’ gentleman has been kidnapped by our hero and is being held captive, with the help of his side kick – Jalal Agha.

The actual gentleman who is being forcibly kept away from the prospecting party event, is the character actor by the name TP Jain. In 1960s and 70s, TP Jain was a very active figure in the Delhi theatre circles and a very active presence in the plays on Delhi Doordarshan.

This song reminds one of “Priye Praneshwari” (‘Hum, Tum Aur Woh’, 1971), a similar disguise song, albeit a suited booted version.

Enjoy this farcical performance, and a lesser known lilting melody – “Main London Chhod Ke Aa Gaya”.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

I don’t know if anyone has noticed the current obsession that I am displaying. Many of my contributions to the blog in this calendar year have been to celebrate the birthdays of artists who are otherwise called “character artist” or “supporting cast”.

Has anyone tried to visualise what story “The Ramayana” would have been if there was no Dasharatha, Kaikeyi, Sugriva, Hanuman, Vibhishana or even Ravan. Can one think of “The Mahabharat” minus Duryodhana, Shakuni, Kunti, or any of the “supporting characters”? Where would “Sholay” be without Gabbar, or the fate of “Mr. India” without Mogambo. Can one think of “Parichay” minus the cute kids of the family, “Chupke Chupke” without Jijaji, “Golmaal” without Bhavani Shankar; “Deewar” minus THE MAA. That means all stories, be they the epics or modern tales, need characters which are good, bad, ugly or in-between, around the main characters for the story to be interesting.

Thank God Indian movies follow the story-pattern set by the epics and have given us quality actors who don’t mind playing second fiddle to the main characters so-much-so that sometimes their acting out the character overshadows the character of the main lead itself.

Today’s post also celebrates the birthday of one such actor without whose presence Manoj Kumar’s “Shaheed”, “Purab Aur Paschim”, “Upkaar” or “Kranti” cannot be imagined. Rajesh Khanna’s 15 (out of the 19 that they were co-actors in) jubilee hits would be unthinkable and it seems that distributors, back then, backed any movie with this hero-villain Jodi. Similarly, his pairing with Bindu was also much sought after in movies till even in the 90s. This actor was successful for his villainy without gizmos or funny names. And he is one of the many actors whose work has always been appreciated by the audiences; who will be able to survive in the cut-throat competition that Bollywood has. He has played second fiddle to so many of his contemporary villains even after attaining success with ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Upkaar’, ‘Teesri Manzil’ etc.

He was known for his one-liners. For example “main woh bala hoon jo sheeshay se patthar ko todta hai” in Kati Patang; “jinke ghar sheeshe kain ho woh batti bhujakar kapde badalte hain” in Souten; then in the next decade of his career these one-liners went a step further towards enhancing his comic characters with gems like “bhains poonch uthayegi to gaana to nahi gayegi, gobar hi degi” in Aaj Ka Arjun; “kar bhala toh hoga bhala” in Raja Babu and the most charming one-liner of all “nanga nahayega kya aur nichodega kya” in Dulhe Raja. Aah! Now I can see that gleam of excitement in those reading this, and so I will not write his most famous one-liner “Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra” in Bobby

Before I began to write this post, I was hunting for songs with Prem Chopra in them. My logic was mostly all actors start out with the wish to play the main lead. There would be at least a movie or two where Prem Chopra was the HERO and sung some songs to the heroine. And sure enough I found a few but then they are already posted on our blog – “Tum Apni Saheli Ko. . .” (‘Samaaj Ko Badal Daalo’, 1970), “Paanv Mein Painjaniya, Naache Sajaniya. . .” (‘Kunwaari’, 1966), “London Se Aaya Hoon Albela” (‘Vachan’, 1973) & “Aaj Pila De Saaqi Apni Aankhon Ke Paimaane Se” (‘Doli’, 1969). But as a villain also he has sung a song in a train as part of a mission to loot an inspector played by Krishan Dhawan – “Raah Mein Kaliyan Khila ke Yaar” (‘Nafrat’, 1973). Then there are numerous songs where the heroine sings a romantic song to the handsome (many times more good-looking than the hero himself) Prem Chopra in a bid to evoke a response from the hero as in “Kitna Mazaa Aa Raha Hai. . .” (‘Raja Jaani’, 1972). Then there is the song from Sikandar-e-Azam without which no TV or Radio program is complete on the national holidays of Independence Day and Republic Day – “Jahaan Daal Daal Par Soney Ki. . .“. Just that the number of songs lip-synced by Prem Chopra is few. But there are such songs available and he is one of the lucky oldies (today being his 83rd birthday) to be still active in movies and getting to play meaningful characters and also sing once in a while.

He is related to the Kapoor Khandaan as his wife is sister to Krishna Kapoor, wife of Raj Kapoor. By that, he also is brother-in-law of Premnath, Rajendranath etc. His three daughters are married to actors Sharman Joshi, Vikas Bhalla and publicity designer Rahul Nanda- all connected with Bollywood.

About today’s song. I have seen this movie a few years ago on TV (of course) and was happy to see three characters as the protagonists of the movie. ‘Umar’ (2006) was written and directed by Karan Razdan (remember him from the Doordarshan serial ‘Rajani’). It had music by Shamir Tandon and Shaily Shailendra was the lyricist. It starred Kadar Khan, Satish Kaushik, Prem Chopra and Jimmy Shergill in the lead with Shakti Kapoor, Shenaz Treasurywala, Dalip Tahil etc. in supporting cast. It is a story of three old men living the last years of their life in the UK. The three have problems of their own viz. their children ill-treating them, racial discrimination etc. They find solace from an affectionate young man (Jimmy) who is a student and a singer / waiter at a bar. This young man gets embroiled in the murder of his owner and the three elderly men help him run from the law making them fugitives too. But then there were a few songs in that movie which centred around Kadar Khan, Prem Chopra and Satish Kaushik. This was a movie which in Atulji’s words “didn’t try to please all” and so was not very successful at that time possibly what used to be called an “art movie” in the 70s and 80s are now called movies for the “multiplex audience”.

Todays’ song is sung by Kavita Krishnamurty, Sonu Nigam, Manna Dey and Shabab Sabri.

Today is the death anniversary of one of India’s biggest superstars, Rajesh Khanna, affectionately referred to as Kaka. He passed away on the 18th of July 2012. I remember being shocked to hear of his death – and even wrote an emotional post on my blog on the occasion. Although I did know that he had been suffering from cancer, the news hit me hard. Today, it is already 6 years since his death. How time flies!

Maybe it’s a reflection of the person he was, but it seems to me that any conversation about Kaka invariably goes beyond his films, and delves into his personal life and relationships. His, admittedly none too positive, image seems to take over – at the cost of discussion about his films. This is unfortunate – but, to some extent, Kaka probably brought this on himself.

We all know he let success go to his head – and paid a heavy price for it. Like I’ve said before, maybe that was one of his roles here on this earth. To NOT be a role model, to be someone that can be held up as an example by parents to children of how NOT to let success get to your head. Anyway, later in life, Kaka did admit to the mistakes he’d made – and, on this Remembrance Day, I think I’d like to not talk about his mistakes. I’ve discussed them at length in previous posts – I don’t want to repeat myself.

Today, as I remember him, all I want to do is to thank him for the performances he gave me when I was just a young boy, growing up in the late 60s / early 70s. I’m going to pause just a bit here to remember those performances.

There were many – his filmography of that period and his success rate would put any other actor in the shade. Not even the big 3 (Dilip, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand) who came before him could deliver that many hits in that short a time frame. Or the biggie who followed right after. But personally I couldn’t care less about the box-office success of those films. I was just a young boy – what did I know about the box-office? All I knew was, there was this “hero” on screen who, through his smile, or tilt of the head, or “guru” kurta, or dialogue delivery had me mesmerized in film after film, singing one blissful song after another (at that time I didn’t know about playback).

I didn’t always understand the storyline, or even all the dialogues, but everytime he would be romancing  the heroine, whether it was Sharmila or Mumtaz or Tanuja or Hema or another, it felt like all was just perfect with the world. It wasn’t as if other heroes didn’t have romantic scenes with the heroines, but somehow it seemed different in Kaka films. Later, when I thought about this, I felt it was possibly because romance was usually intrinsic to Kaka films. It formed part of the main plot itself. Whereas for others, it was an important element no doubt, but the storyline often had a crime-related plot – like smuggling.  Note that wherever romance IS the plot, the film seems very Kaka-like. For example, ‘Aa Gale Lag Ja’ (1973) could very well have been a Kaka film, though it had Shashi Kapoor in the main lead.

Of course, it was not always a happy ending. Kaka would often die in the film, breaking my heart.  This only made the film a bigger hit, so storylines were devised accordingly.

I thoroughly enjoyed those films – have fond memories of ‘Aradhana’, ‘Aan Milo Sajna’, ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Dushman’, ‘Apna Desh’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Mere Jeevan Saathi’, and so many others. Whether it was “Mere Sapnon Ki Rani”, “Yahaan Wahaan Saare”, “Ye Shaam Mastaani”, “Waada Tera Waada”, “Rona Kabhi Nahin Rona”, “Dilbar Jaani”, “O Mere Dil Ke Chain” or any of his numerous hits of the time, I knew them all by heart – all stanzas. We’d often sing these songs amongst friends.

At that time I had no idea about Kaka beyond his screen presence. Ignorance was truly bliss.

Then things began changing.

Suddenly he didn’t seem to have the same magic anymore. I tend to associate this with his “long hair” phase but, to be fair to him, that was just the fashion of the time. Hamming seemed to have set in – even the films seemed to lack that romantic feel about them. The last couple of movies I remember of that era that I saw, and could accept, were ‘Aap Ki Kasam’ (1974) and ‘Prem Kahaani’ (1975).

Mehbooba (1976) was probably the first big shock for me. It was highly hyped at the time – what with the two biggest names, Kaka and Hema, as the lead actors. Not to mention RD Burman’s music. I remember the film being a big flop. Later I read that the decline started even earlier but for me, at that age, Mehbooba was the marker.

That was a terrible period for him. Flop after flop. I clearly remember ‘Bundalbaaz’, ‘Chalta Purza’, ‘Aashiq Hoon Baharon Ka’, even BR Chopra’s ‘Karm’ (another much-awaited film) – all failed. But there were more.

Oh, one thing. I said I didn’t know about box-office but there was one indicator for me. I used to travel by school bus to school, 30 km away. En-route there was a film theatre. From the bus, we could see which film was running. That gave us a pretty good idea of hit or flop. I remember ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’ running for many weeks, whereas ‘Bundalbaaz’ and ‘Chalta Purza’ just came and went.

After watching ‘Aashiq Hoon Baharon Ka’, I really couldn’t take it anymore. What had happened to my “Ye Shaam Mastaani” Rajesh Khanna? How had he morphed into this “I am in love, you are in love, he is in love, she is in love” Rajesh Khanna? I stopped seeing his movies. I couldn’t bear to.

Later, in the mid-80s, I did watch a few – but only because they were on Doordarshan. ‘Thodisi Bewafai’ (1980), ‘Avtaar’ (1983) and ‘Aakhir Kyon’ (1985). I quite liked them. But only these.

For the next 25 years, I stayed away from Kaka films that I had not watched. Sure, I watched the old ones to relive their magic. But none of his post-1977 films. Only a few years ago, I mustered the courage to watch this category. I think it had to do with his death. Maybe I felt I was doing him grave injustice by avoiding these films. After all, he must have worked just as hard in them, as in his early films. So why not at least give them a shot? For Kaka’s sake.

I started with the more successful ones – at least those with popular songs. Like ‘Agar Tum Na Hote’ (1983), ‘Kudrat’ (1981), ‘Rajput’ (1982). I kept my expectations very low. I quite liked all these films. And I was quite impressed by Kaka too. I don’t recall seeing much of the hamming  that I had dreaded. Sure they were very different from his early 1970s films – but that’s to be expected.

Recently I got into the mood again – and did a Kaka binge. I watched ‘Amrit’ (1986), ‘Dhanwaan’ (1981), ‘Dard’ (1981), ‘Aanchal’ (1980), ‘Janta Hawaldar’ (1979) and ‘Amar Deep’ (1979), all within the last month. As usual, keeping expectations low. I liked some more than the others, of course. But what I realized is each of their story lines is very different from the rest. That also made me realize that Kaka’s movies often had that – different story lines. This, at a time in the late 70s or in the 80s, when usually you had formulaic dhishum-dhishum films, either as multi-starrers, or hero taking revenge on the villain.

I now plan to watch more Kaka films of the period. Even if they’re not good, that’s ok. I keep my expectations low – and I’m watching them for Kaka. His looks aren’t what they were in the early 1970s – but that only seems to make him all the more real for me. And, worst case, the film will probably have a reasonable story line.

Moving on to today’s song.

Now having watched all these Kaka films recently, and most of them not being much represented on the blog, I was somewhat spoilt for choice today. I could have picked at least half a dozen Kaka songs from these films alone – and I do plan to write up more from these films. But for today, I’ve chosen “Paise Ka Kaajal” from ‘Aanchal’ (1980).

Firstly, this song comes in the category of “ye gaana IS film mein hai?” for me. I’d heard it all those years ago but didn’t know which film it was from. Secondly, ‘Aanchal’ is not represented yet on the blog, so it makes its debut today. Thirdly, it is a song & dance – and I quite like song & dance. 🙂 What I particularly liked about this one, apart from the song itself, is Kaka’s style. Not that he was a great dancer, but his style here reminded me of the Kaka of the early 1970s, when he’d dance similarly opposite heroines of the time. 🙂

The film stars Kaka, Rekha, Raakhee, Amol Palekar and Prem Chopra. It’s a village-based story, where Kaka and Amol Palekar are brothers, with Raakhee married to Amol Palekar. Since Kaka is her husband’s younger brother, Raakhee treats him with great affection. Kaka too has highest regard for his bhabhi. Prem Chopra, who has a score to settle with Amol Palekar, plays mischief, creating misunderstanding in his mind about the relationship between Raakhee and Kaka. Also, doing the same to Rekha, who is in love with Kaka.

To be honest, the film picks up only in the second half – the first half is rather slow. But maybe it is a build-up to show the relationships between the characters. I was rather keen for the film to get on with the plot. 🙂

In any case, do listen to this fairly catchy tune composed by RD Burman.  Lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. As usual, the lyrics have been provided to me by Avinash ji. He is always very helpful in this respect, sending me lyrics for any post I plan to write.

Not only this, he is a huge Kaka fan – a much bigger fan than I am. Avinash ji did tell me that he might not be able to write a post for Kaka on this occasion. So this is our joint tribute to Kaka, as we remember him fondly today.

Blog Day : 3600 Post No. : 14368

Today (27 may 2018) is the 3600th day for the blog. I posted a light hearted song on the occasion. Now, here is a proper party song. 🙂

This song is from “Naseeb”(1981). “Naseeb”(1981) was an archtypical Manmohan Desai movie. It had Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, Rishi Kapoor, Kim Yashpal,Pran, Amjad Khan, Kader Khan, Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra, Shakti Kapoor etc in it.

It is amazing to realise that this movie had just six songs in it but they were sung by as many as eleven singers ! Rafi, Lata, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Usha Mangeshkar, Suman Kalyanpur, Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Anwar, Shhailendra Singh, Kamlesh Awasthi were the singers who lent their voices in these six songs.

Theree is never a dull moment in a Manmohan Desai movie. There are many great HFM songs that are regarded as “better heard than watched”, but no Manmohan Desai song is likely to fall in that category. Manmohan Desai songs are almost always great treats to watch. These songs would tend to be long songs but audiences would still watch them spellbpound.

This song under discussion is no exception. Lilting Laxmikant Pyarelal prelude music begins while a cage descends on the banquet hall of the five star hotel. Hema Malini emerges out of a cage. This is somewhat (or rather delibetarely) reminiscent of Amitabh Bachchan emerging out of an easter egg in “Amar Akbar Anthony”(1977), another Manmohan Desai blockbuster. Amitabh Bachchan is very much present here in this song as well- and this time as a waiter in that five star hotel who tends to double up as a singer as well as is testified in the song John Jaani Janardan from this movie.

Amitabh Bachchan may be waiting on the guests, but he also manages to dance a step or two in between serving the guests. 🙂 He would get to do this some more in “Namak Halal”(1982) a few months later. 🙂

In these parties, one is bound to have a guest showing undue interest on the female singer. Prem Chopra is that errant guest here. Oldtimers may recall that Prem Chopra was lusting after Hema Malini since the days of “Raaja Jaani”(1972) and he even got Hema Malini to sing a song or two for him. For instance, this song Kitna mazaa aa raha hai(Raja Jani)(1972). 🙂

Prem Chopra has a message for Hema Malini (dance ke baad kamre mein milo) and he gets Amitabh Bachchan to act as the instant messenger. Amitabh Bachchan, as is his wont, hands his tray over to Prem Chopra and goes towards Hema Malini to deliver the message. Whether Hema Malini is scandalised by the contents of the message is something we never get to know because the song resumes as if nothing happened.

The song is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The video of the song is over five minutes long. Still the video version has one stanza missing in it. The audio version of the song has all stanzas, but then this version has a few lesser lines (less repetition of lines) and the Amitabh Bachchan- Hema Malini dialogue is missing in the audio version.

The song is the title song and so it talks about “Naseeb” viz fate. Naseeb leads to coincidences which we already know even without Manmohan Desai telling us. This song as well as other songs of this movie too have some coincidences associated with them. This song, the sixth and final song from the movie appears on the 3600th day of the blog. The movie had another philosophical song in it, viz Zindagi imtihaan leti hai . And guess what ! That song was covered in the blog eight years ago on a day that happened to be the 700th day of the blog !

That is not all. The fifth and penultimate song from the movie, viz Pakdo pakdo pakdo jakdo jakdo jakdo was covered on the day when the final of Premier Kabaddi League was being played. Now, the sixth and final song from the movie is being covered on the day when the final of IPL is under progress as I type these lines. 🙂

So, without typing any more lines, here is this wonderful philosophical title song from “Naseeb”(1981) on the 3600th day of the blog.

We in this blog had two new resolutions and I had decided to stick to them as long as I can. One was to introduce a “new” movie daily and another was to to close the account of another movie by YIPPying it.

We are in may 2017, and both these resolutions have finally seen breaks. For instance, there was no YIPPEE song on 13 may 2017, a day that had only one post, a post that introduced a “new” song. The string on YIPPEE posts was in fact broken a few days earlier on 6 may itself when I posted a song that I thought was YIPPYing its movie but I was wrong. The “new” post string had got broken a while ago.

The movie had six songs in it. Four songs from the movie have been discussed in the past.

In Hindi movies, the leading lady would sing “romantic” songs only for the benefit of the leading man. But sometimes she would sing such songs for the villain as well, though here her intention would be to outwit him rather than romance him.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

I thought of putting down a few thoughts; that came to me in the last few days; on record. For one who is constantly Bangalore- Bashing as regards to the infrastructure etc, I must admit that it has given me a few PLUSes. I have been able to go for a few musical shows at some of the lovely Halls that Bangalore has. It all began with a show which was titled “Suno Mere Bandho Re” which paid tribute to S.D. Burman to the last one; about which I cannot stop myself from repeating about- where I saw my all time favourite Basanti. This is probably because of the changed working hours of the family members. I have found a little more free time here than in the period when I was a Mumbai-mother. Again the free time could be due to that fact that I go out very little on Social visits. So all things put together I find at least an hour or two to sit at my Desktop and read, listen to songs etc. This has also been the cause of my associating with the blog and getting to know a whole new set of Human Beings who have interests similar to mine. Of course for this I should whole heartedly Thank my daughter who stumbled on the blog.

There was a time when we used to discuss songs on the occasion of anni9versaries of artists. That practice is no longer as common now a days as used to be the case. Things are slow in the blog at the moment, but one should not be surprised if we soon pick up pace once again. At this juncture my time is being taken up in other matters. Not that I have not spent time on the blog. I have spent good amount of time in background work, and the results of that may have escaped the attention of most. Some of the result of my work is available on the blog for those who may have noticed it (like for instance Sudhir Ji and Mr Sadanand Kamath, for instance). Then there are other background work whose results are not reflected yet in the blog, but they are there with me and they will enable me to go about futute posying of songs in a more systematic and streamlined manner.
