Aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni

Posted on: February 25, 2009

We are used to seeing Guru Dutt is tragic roles, so imagine my surprise when I found out that it is none other than Guru Dutt who plays this jumping jack kind of role in this song.

Sung by Lata and Mahendra Kapoor, this song from “Bharosa” (1963) is picturised on Asha Parekh and Guru Dutt. Ravi is the music director and Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist.

The song is quite a popular song, which is to be expected if Ravi is the music director. In fact, one can expect this movie to be full of many such nice songs.

Song-Aaj ki mulaqaat bas itni (Bharosa) (1963) Singers-Lata, Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan,MD-Ravi

Lyrics

aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni,
kar lenaa baaten kal chaahe jitni
aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni,
kar lenaa baaten kal chaahe jitni
achchhi nahin hoti hai zid itni,
dekho hamen tumse hai preet kitni
aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni,

pyaar jo kiyaa hai jataate ho kyun,
baat aisi hothon pe laate ho kyun
pyaar jo kiyaa hai jataate ho kyun,
baat aisi hothon pe laate ho kyun
aur ham jo poochhen sataate ho kyun,
abhi abhi aaye ab jaate ho kyun
aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni,
kar lenaa baaten kal chaahe jitni
ho achchhi nahin hoti hai zid itni,
dekho hamen tumse hai preet kitni
ho aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni

kabhi kabhi aise bhi aayaa karo
chaand nikle to ghar jaayaa karo
kabhi kabhi aise bhi aayaa karo
chaand nikle to ghar jaayaa karo
aayenge jaayenge marzi se ham
pyaar hai to naaz bhi uthaayaa karo
achchhi nahin hoti hai zid itni,
dekho hamen tumse hai preet kitni
aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni
kar lenaa baaten kal chaahe jitni
aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni

thahro main dil ko sambhaaloon zaraa
palkon mein tumko chhupaa loon zaraa hoy
thahro main dil ko sambhaaloon zaraa
palkon mein tumko chhupaa loon zaraa
samjhe na ab tak mohabbat hai kyaa
aao tumhe ye bhi samjhaa doon zaraa
achchhi nahin hoti hai zid itni,
dekho hamen tumse hai preet kitni
aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni
kar lenaa baaten kal chaahe jitni
aaj ki mulaaqaat bas itni

Never knew this had been picturised on Guru Dutt: you are right, one is not used to seeing him cheerful and chirpy!

This song is best remembered by me as THE last song on Vividh Bharati song programmes. Whether “Chhaya Geet” or even later programs, they would often end with something like “Achha, program ka waqt ab khatam ho chala hai, aasha hai ki aapko program pasand aaya hoga. Jaate jaate ye gaana suniye…”. And this would play. 🙂

(This brings back memories. There used to be a presenter called Kanta Gupta. She would say “achha, mujhe aaj ek khat mila hai..likhne waale ne likha hai…Kantajee….nahin, aadar se Kantajee nahin keh rahe hain mujhe…mera naam Kanta Gupta na, isliye Kanta G….”. What memories ! 🙂 ).

Back to this song and movie. Saw this movie a few years ago and I remember the story very well. This movie was made in 1963, same year as Bahurani – in which also Guru Dutt did not have his typical “I am the most miserable man in the world” role.

Both movies are made by South Indian production houses, I think. Maybe that explains it. They would not have wanted to appreciated Guru Dutt in this “miserable man” role. For that they had Sivaji Ganesan. 🙂

Hahaha. Yes, this song is an ideal ” ab mujhe izaajat deejiye” kind of song.

Lovely as well as lively duet sung by Lata Mahendra , like Abhi Naa Jaao Chhod Kar by Asha Rafi from Ham Dono.
The programme ending song .
