Thande thande paani se nahaana chaahiye

“Bathroom singing” is quite a popular hobby with many people. One reason for bathroom singing is that it is the only place where one could sing without being disturbed. Another esoteric reason is to tell people that you have occupied the bathroom. This is useful in case the door of the bathroom does not get locked ( especially useful for those staying in hostels).
I am surprised that there has been hardly any bathroom song in Bollywood movies. I have categorised a few songs as bathroom songs just because those songs were picturised in the bathroom, but they were not bathroom songs in the true sense.
This song from “Pati Patni aur woh” tries to fill this gap. This is a song where Sanjeev Kumar and his son decide to take bath the desi style (wearing similar coloured striped chaddis tailored from the same cloth 😉 ), where water is taken out from a bucket and poured over the body. And a “lota” is used for this purpose. Wow! a lota ! Those were the days. Plastic mugs of these days can never take the place of brass lotas.
Then there is the small matter of taking bath in cold season. The very thought sends a shiver down the spine. Many people decide to postpone taking bath during that season. Kids remonstrate with their moms that they had taken bath only the last week. Forget kids, even their baaps may not be in the mood to take bath.
This song “thande thande paani se nahaana chaahiye” is a very cute song that very realistically picturises a real life situation in many real life households in India. Sanjeev Kumar, the kid (Maste Bittu, I think), and Vidhya Sinha are so realistic in this picturisation.
The lyrics by Anand Bakshi expresses the feelings of the bathtaker cum bathroom singer so very aptly. Sanjeev Kumar inviting Vidhya Sinha to take a bath too
“tum bhi zara nahaalo
do chaar geet gaa lo”
is quite cute. Also, on being told that the neighbours may be listening to all the racket, the response is quite fitting
” kah do padosiyon se, na jhaanke khidkiyon se”
Overall, this song is a laugh riot, and it is a song whose need was very badly felt by Bollywood music fans.
Kudos to the makers of this song.
Song-Thande thande paani se nahaana chaahiye(Pati Patni Aur Woh) (1978) Singers-Mahendra Kapoor, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Ravindra Jain
Lyrics
ho ho
ho ho
thande thande paani se nahaana chaahiye
ho ho
thande thande paani se nahaana chaahiye
gaana aaye ya naa aaye gaana chaahiye
haan
arre gaana aaye ya naa aaye gaana chaahiye
o puttara
thande thande paani se nahaana chaahiye
gaana aaye ya naa aaye gaana chaahiye
arre gaana aaye ya naa aaye gaana chaahiye
beta bajaao taali
gaate hain ham qawwaali
bajne do ek taara
chhodo zara fawwara
ye baalti uthaao
dholak isse banaao
baithe ho kya ye lekar
ye ghar hai ya hai threatre
picture nahin hai jaana
baahar nahin hai aana
mummi ko bhi andar bulaana chaahiye
teri mummy ko bhi andar bulaana chaahiye
ganaa aaye ya na aaye gaana chaahiye
dhut
arre ganaa aaye ya na aaye gaana chaahiye
tum meri hathkadi ho
tum door kyun khadi ho
tum bhi zara nahaalo
do chaar geet gaa lo
daaman ho kyun bachaati
arre dukh sukh ke ham hain saathi
chhodo hato anaadi
meri bhigodi sadi
tum kaise besharam ho
bacchon se koi kam ho
mummy ko to ladne ka bahaana chaahiye
chup be shaitaan
mummy ko to ladne ka bahaana chaahiye
gaana aaye ya na aaye gaana chaahiye
haan
gaana aaye ya na aaye gaana chaahiye
he he
ho ho aaa aaa
lambi ye taan chhodo
tauba hai jaan chhodo
ye geet hai adhoora
karte hain kaam poora
ab shor mat karo jee
sunte hain sab padosi
hoy kah do padosiyon se
kyaa
jhaanken na khidkiyon se
darwaza khatkhataaya
lagta hai koyi aaya
arre kah do ke aa rahe hain
saahab naha rahe hain
ho o o
mummy ko to daddy se chhudaana chaahiye
ab to mummy ko daddy se chhudaana chaahiye
ganaa aaye ya na aaye gaana chaahiye
arre gaana aaye ya naa aaye gaana chaahiye
puttara
thande thande paani se nahaana chaahiye
o thande thande paani se nahaana chaahiye
gaanaa aaye ya na aaye gaana chaahiye
arre ganaa aaye ya na aaye gaana chaahiye

I am surprised that I have never heard this song before, probably because those were the early days of marriage, and I was preoccupied! Thoroughly enjoyable song!

A fun song from a very enjoyable movie. What a great loss to Indian film industry that we lost a great actor like Sanjeev Kumar. He was just 47 when he passed away.
