Khelo na mere dil se

Posted on: March 13, 2009

We all are aware that Madan Mohan movies tended to have songs that are now regarded as classics. But the movie makers of those movies were not aware of this fact at that time.

I have realised that many great Madan Mohan songs were often omitted from the movie. For instance, “Haqeeqat” (1964) that musiccal blockbuster had a Lata song called “Khelo na mere dil se” which was omitted from the movie.

This song is now available on youtube ( with visuals from the same movie- real visuals of this song are no longer available) which has been uploaded by a fellow Madan Mohan fan and a visitor of this blog viz bemused321.

After listening to this song, one wonders how many such great gems may have been lost with time just because such songs could not be accomodated in their movies.

This song sounds like an absolute Lata-Madan Mohan classic. And I am talking so after listeneing to this song just two or three times.

Kaifi Azmi has written this wonderful song.

Song-Khelo na mere dil se (Haqueeqat) (1964) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

Khelo na mere dil se
Khelo na mere dil se
o mere saajna
o saajna
o saajna
khelo na
khelo na
mere dil se khelo na
mere dil se

muskura ke dekhte to ho mujhe
gham hai kisliye nigaah me
muskura ke dekhte to ho mujhe
gham hai kisliye nigaah me
manzil apni tum alag basaaoge
mujhko chhod doge raah me
pyaar kyaa dillagi
pyaar kyaa khel hai
khelo ne mere dil se
o mere saanja
o saajnaa
o saajnaa
khelo na
mere dil se

kyun nazar milaayi thi lagaao se
hans ke dil mera liya tha kyun
kyun nazar milaayi thi lagaao se
hans ke dil mera liya tha kyun
kyun mile the zindagi ke mod par
mujhko aasra diya tha kyun
pyaar kyaa dillagi
pyaar kyaa khel hai
khelo na mere dil se
o mere saajna
o saajnaa
o saajnaa
khelo na
khelo na
mere dil se
khelo na
mere dil se
o mere saajna
o saajna
o saajna
khelo naa
mere dil se

It is amazing how many great songs from Madan Mohan did not appear on the screen. You already mentioned “Khelo Na” and “Jis Din Se Maine.” Then there is Manna Dey/Lata duet “Woh Chand Muskaya” from Aakhri Dao, Lata’s “Tere Bin Sawan” from Jab Yaad Kisi Ki Aati Hai” and “Chand Madhyam Hai” from Railway Platform; also Kisohre Kumar’s “Des Chhudaye” and Asha’s “Nazre Utha Ke Jara Dekh Le” from Chacha Zindabad.

This is a very beautiful song. And FIY, if you’ve heard “quit playing games with my heart” by backstreet boys, you’ll realize that the first lines of the backstreet boys song are a translation of the song khelo na mere dil se. I wonder which one came first.

“Quit Playing Games (with My Heart)” by the Backstreet Boys was recorded in June 1995 in Stockholm, Sweden and released in 1996.

The film, Haqeeqat(1964) is a good 30 years older.
Despite all that, we need not think the theme was copied.
The theme is by no means unique.
Many songs and poems would have been written on the same subject.

partial sound track was used in 1994 Mammo(Khalid Mohammed/Shyam Benegal movie). In that movie child artiste Amit Phalke remembers his Late mother(Rajeshwari Sachdeva) lip syncing for this song(that is the above provided video link)
