Chane Jor Garam Babu

Posted on: March 13, 2009

This song is as much as 70 years old, and I am listening to this song for the first time just now.

I loved it the very first time I listened to it. It is a light hearted time pass song, one which can also be called a kids song.

There is no pretention of any kind of seriousness in this song. It is an out and out light hearted song where a Chana jor vendor plies his wares outside a school ( “middle school” are the words written in Hindi on the school building). It is nice to know that the generations of our great grand parents too had such chana jor vendors selling these stuff to them outside their schools.

The singer is someone called Arun Kumar. I think that the singer is the actor too, considering how it was those days. And I must say that the singer has sung this song outstandingly well. I loved the song from the very first time that I heard it today.

And what about the music ? The music appears quite ahead of its times. And the music director is Saraswati Devi, the first female music director in the history of Bollywood movies.

What a song ! The lyrics have been written by the one and only Pradeep. This song deserves to be ranked as an all time classic instead of being consigned to the dustbin of history as a forgotten song.

This song has two versions. Both of them are sung by Arun Kumar.

Part I

Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam
Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam
mere chane hain chatpat bhaiya
aur bade lasaani
aur kaise chaav se khaate
dekho Raam aur Ramzaani
aur chunnu munnu ki jabaan bhi
ho gayi paani paani
Aur kahen Kabeer suno bhai saadho
suno guru ki baani
Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam
Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam

are madarse ka jeewan to
chand dinon ka thaath
aur padh likh kar sab chal doge apni apni baat
phir koyi tumme hoga afsar koyi Governor Laat
tab main aaunga daftar tumhre
main aaunga daftar tumhre
liye chane ki chaat
Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam
Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam

Part II

Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam
mera chana bana hai aala
jismein daala garam masaala
chakhte jaana jo tum laala
kehta hoon main gulle waala
iska swaad hai bada niraala
Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam

aaloo chane ki bahaar
khaate jaana jee sarkaar
mere ??
agar tumko na ho aitbaar
to main bhi karta hoon lalkaar
Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam

dekh lo mera ye darbaar
yahaan par khade ??
???
ek se ek sabhi ??

ye dekho mere lambe daanth
ye dekho mere ?? daant
yehi hain mere thaanedaar
aur ye bade sipahsaalaar
vaanar sena ke sardaar
Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam
Chane jor garam baabu
main laaya majedaar
chane jor garam

Is it still around or have kids moved on to crisps?

A number of Hindi poets have tried ‘chana zor garam’ in their own way. The most famous and the eldest is from Bhartendu Babu Harishchandra in the 19th century. Even today one can see vendors selling chana zor garam by singing this song adapted according to the seller’s ability and mood, in the towns of Uttar Pradesh. For example ‘mera chana khayn punjabi jinke mukhde sada gulabi jinke des mein bahti ravi chana zor garam’ etc, etc.
