Hai duniya usi ki zamaana usi kaa

“Kashmir Ki Kali ” has so many nice songs that this particular song somehow misses out in the popularity stakes. Though I have heard this song a few times, and for that matter I have even watched the movie, but I was not aware that the song “hai duniya usi ki zamaana usika” was from “Kashmir Ki Kali”.
This particular song has to be special one. It is one of the few Rafi-Shammi Kapoor song that is a sad song. Yes, it is true. In this song a herat broken Shammi Kapoor gets drunk in a bar and sings this song.
Unlike most Shammi Kapoor movies, here the lyricist was S H Bihari and the music director was O P Nayyar, and together they had created some scintillating music in this movie, including the song under discussion.

Song-Hai duniya usi ki zamaana usikaa (Kashmir Ki Kali) (1964) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-S H Bihari, MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics
hai duniyaa usi ki, zamaanaa usi kaa
mohabbat mein jo ho gayaa ho kisi kaa
hai duniyaa usi ki, zamaanaa usi kaa
mohabbat mein jo ho gayaa ho kisi kaa
lutaa jo musaafir dil ke safar mein
hai jannat ye duniyaa uski nazar mein
lutaa jo musaafir dil ke safar mein
hai jannat ye duniyaa uski nazar mein
usi ne hai lootaa mazaa zindagi kaa
mohabbat mein jo ho gayaa ho kisi kaa
hai sajde ke kaabil har wo deewaanaa
ke jo ban gayaa ho tasweer-e-jaanaa
hai sajde ke kaabil har wo deewaanaa
ke jo ban gayaa ho tasweer-e-jaanaa
karo ehtraam uski deewaangi kaa
mohabbat mein jo ho gayaa ho kisi kaa
barbaad honaa jiski adaa ho
dard-e-mohabbat jiski dawaa ho
barbaad honaa jiski adaa ho
dard-e-mohabbat jiski dawaa ho
sataayegaa kyaa gham use zindagi kaa
mohabbat mein jo ho gayaa ho kisi kaa
hai duniyaa usi ki, zamaanaa usi kaa
mohabbat mein jo ho gayaa ho kisi kaa

This number stands out because it is the rarest of the rarest ‘drunken’ song by Rafi for Shammi. With hardly three musical instruments as back-up Rafi renders his best with Shammi modulating in his own and unique style. Usually, the Shammi-Rafi pair is equated with fast-paced solo songs and occasionally slow numbers. If I am not mistaken only a few pathos songs were sung by Rafi for Shammi like in ‘Pyar Kya Ke Doorna Kiya’ (Zindagi), ‘Bluff Master’ (Me Dil). But this one stands out because of Shammi’s drunk modulation and the background sober saxaphone player. If you ask the present kids they will not believe that Rafi gave the voice. They will argue that it is Shammi’s. Those were the days!

I fully agree. I may be wrong since I don’t know basics of music — the music of OPN is unlike him. It is so different and stands out. Hats off to these genius people : Rafi, OPN, Lyrics of SH Behati is made immortal by these great on screen. TooIt is very easy to like this song. Rafi gives life and meaning to every word, syllable, line of the song and Shammi is able to do justice this great rendering
