Lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai

The golden era of Bollywood movie songs was supposed to have ended circa 1980 when lyrics took the backseat and music became synonymous with plagiarised disco beats. Most songs of 1980s had trouble maintaining their popularity for more than a few weeks. Creation of all time great timeless classics became a thing of the past in 1980s.
Even then, every now and then, one came across songs that kindled hopes in the hearts of the audiences that all was not lost and that there were still people who were creating quality songs, even though such songs were few and far between.
Here is one such song that was created in 1989. The movie is “Chaandni”. The song was written by Anand Bakshi and the music directors were Shiv Hari. Singers were Suresh Wadkar and Anupama Deshpande. In other words, it took old guard to come up with a memorable song like they used to create earlier.
What nice words ! It is sheer poetry of the lyrics that elevates this rain song into a classic song as good as any that has been created in Bollywood movies.
The picturisation on Vinod Khanna and Sridevi does justice to the song.

Song-Lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai (Chaandni) (1989) Singer-Suresh Wadkar, Anupama Deshpande, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Shiv Hari
Lyrics
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
wahi aag seene mein phir jal padi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
kuchh aise hi din the wo jab ham mile the
chaman mein nahin phool dil mein khile the
wahin to hai mausam magar rut nahin wo
mere saath barsaat bhi ro padi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
koyi kaash dil pe bas haath rakh de
mere dil ke tukdon ko ik saath rakh de
magar ye hain khwaabon khayaalon ki baaten
kabhi toot kar cheez koyi judi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai
wahi aag seene mein phir jal padi hai
lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai

conveys the pathos of the hero in a poignant way. alas.. he loses on the heroine the second time round as well, the reason why it is played in the end as well. amazing music, especially the sitar (or is it guitar) that plays on. vinod khanna really looks like the true blue hero with unrequitted love….

I like this song very much.
Pretty much all the songs of Chandni were good but this song was really special.
