Hullo Atuldom

“Chaandni” (1989) from the Yashraj Films stable was produced and directed by Yash Chopra. It starred Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Mita Vashisht, Anant Mahadevan, Manohar Singh, and Waheeda Rehman and Achala Sachdev in guest appearances. It was the story of Chandni Mathur a young effervescent young lady unsure of her emotions for two gentle men.

This was Yash Chopra’s return to his formula of love stories with good music, locales, and heavy dose of emotions and sentiments. It was very successful and also confirmed Sridevi’s position as a super actress.

It had songs written by Anand Bakshi and set to music by Shiv-Hari. Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar, Jolly Mukherjee, Nitin Mukesh, Vinod Rathod, Anupama Deshpande (the humming in the song ‘lagi aaj saawan ki phir woh jhadi hain’), Asha Bhonsle, Babla etc. were the playback singers There is even a Kishore Kumar song in the movie which had 9 songs and the blog has 7 of these.

The above is what I had written on this date, last year, in the post remembering Sridevi. I must apologize for making a wrong statement in there- “Sorry there is no Kishore Kumar song in this film. The song which I thought was by Kishoreda was actually ‘bani tu meri mehbooba’ and it was in Vinod Rathod’s voice”.

Of the nine songs in the movie the following eight are already on the blog :-

Chaandni o meri chaandni 24 February 2021

I am not very happy with the month of February, it has been a sad month for the entertainment industry. We have lost entertainers, gems, legends who were part of our growing up years. First it was our darling Lata Mangeshkar, that news was followed by the news of another legend’s passing- Sandhya Mukherjee from Kolkatta. The newsprint on that news had not yet dried and we got news of Bappi Lahiri’s passing. I was just wondering what is happening and yesterday evening saw the news of another entertainer’s passing- K.P.A.C Lalitha. She was an all-rounder from Malayalam films, had appeared in one or two Tamil films too and was active for five decades- from 1969. I may have seen her work only post 1988 and that had prompted me to see any movie that she is present in. She was active till a month ago and has left many incomplete films behind her. She would have turned 75 in a weeks’ time.

Yesterday, SLBC played chupke-se-mile-pyaase-pyaase in its program ‘ek hi film se’ and I recalled how I first got to know of this wonderful blog of Atulji which I like to call ‘Blog of ours’. I remembered that it is a month short of 13 years of my association with “Atulsongaday” which I like to call Atuldom. I had written the following in my 400th/sup> post and it still holds true for me:-

Before we get on to the song I must thank Atulji for allowing us as contributors on his blog and posting my mail to him giving details of the song as my first post ever as lyrics- contributor. That prompted me to send a few more lyrics as farmaishes and then the writing bug bit me and the number of days between my posts have been steadily reducing.

I know my contributions are not masterpieces but my own thoughts and feelings. How I wish I had the patience of Sadanandji to write well-researched posts. Or the knowledge of Arunkumarji whom I call Guruji or even the resources (read HFGK) of people like Sudhirji, Avinashji etc. I must also mention the love of Nahmji’s love for poetry and poets and her posts have been enlightening.

With today’s song we have all songs of “Chaandni” on our blog. So, let us YYIIPPEEEE to it.

Missing the effervescent Sridevi.

Song-Aa meri jaan main tujhmein apni jaan rakh doon (Chaandni)(1989) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi MD-Shiv Hari

“Chaandni” (1989) from the Yashraj Films stable was produced and directed Yash Chopra. It starred Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Mita Vasisht, Anant Mahadevan, Manohar Singh, and Waheeda Rehman and Achala Sachdev in guest appearances.

The Kishore Kumar song has not yet been posted.

Today’s song is the surprise of the movie. I suppose this was the only song that Sridevi has sung in Hindi films. Of course, there is a song in Balu Mahendra directed “Sadma” where Sridevi’s voice was heard along with Kamal Haasan’s in the story-song ‘ek dafa ek jungle tha’ where she giggles and gives reaction to whatever Kamal was saying.

The song with this post is something which I have always wondered about. Whether it is a fantasy or flashback. I have seen this movie a number of times and I have not been able to decide. It has been shot in the picturesque Switzerland. It is one of the songs where the heroine is seen dressed environment appropriately. It also is a lesson for the lover to never meet his love without gifts.

We remember our beloved “khwaabon ki Shehzaadi” Sridevi who left us on 24th February 2018 today. She left her family, friends and countless fans shocked when the news broke over news channels in the wee hours of 25th. The general reaction was “it cannot be true”. How can a person who was so full of vitality and healthy and eagerly expecting her daughter’s first bow on the Bollywood firmament “just go!!!!” She herself just had had a release “Mom” and was seen at various award functions and TV channels. A lasting memory for me, personally, was from the TV dance reality show where she was seen shaking a leg with her contemporary Madhuri Dixit and it was a soothing sight for sore eyes. There have been posts on our blog which have her life-story, list of co-stars etc.
Thank you Sridevi for having entertained us through your life-time having started as a child-actor.

khair chhodo (giggle)
darpok kahin ke

phir kis baat se darte ho
phir kis baat se darte ho
bolo

dil pe likhi baaton ko
ponchh na de tu aanchal se
maine is dil pe likh diya tera na..aa..am
chaandni
o meri chaandni

oho
you fo…ooo…ool,

kaun main
yes yes yes yes
kyun
koi phool koi tohfa
tum kuchh bhi saath nahi laate
bade wo ho
samjhaaoon tumhen
pyaar sikhaaoon tumhen
apni mehbooba se milne
khaali haath nahin aate
khaali haath nahin aate
tumhe nahin pata

arre re re re
aaj main phir bhool gaya,
yaad rakhoonga ye kal se
maine iss dil pe likh diya tera na..aa..am
chaandni
o meri chaandni

ale le le le le le
badi masti karta hai re tu
mere shona shona shona shona
hahahahaha
pakdo pakdo pakdo pakdo pakdo pakdo pakdo

arre ja ja

ah ha ha
naam mera dil par likh kar
bas tumne baat bana li hai

tumhen kya pata
maine toh dil ke andar
teri tasveer laga li hai

dikhaaoon
dekhoge
haha

arre pyar mein tu jeet gayi
apne premi paagal se
maine iss dil pe likh diya tera na…aa..am
chaandni
o meri chaandni
rang bhare baadal se, (lal la la lal la la lal laa)
tere nainon ke kaajal se (lal lal la la la laa)
maine iss dil pe likh diya tera na..aa..am (la la la la lal laa)

Blog Ten Year Challenge (2009-2019): Song number 21

Hullo Atuldom

Happy Holi!

Some movies have a lot of memories attached to them. Yash Chopra’s “Chaandni” is one such movie. The year was 1989 and I had been to Mumbai (maayka) for my delivery. So, I had a lot of free time when I could interact with all my friends and neighbours like never before (and never have I had a similar opportunity too) 😉 that made that visit to Mumbai special. For those Atulites who know me- I had shifted out of Mumbai post marriage and so the term “visit to Mumbai”.

Getting back to “Chaandni” – those were the days when there were VCRs in many home and people used to rent Video Cassettes of movies which they couldn’t see in the theatres. I have seen a few movies in that way in the company of my neighbour’s family and more importantly their son. Their son was a year or two older to me so he was a mentor, guide, friend, idol and so many other things for me. To start off (as was the norm in those times) he was my Rakhi bro but we had a different equation between the two of us. He being my idol – I started liking Rekha- his favourite and he, on his part, made an effort to like Amitabh because he doted on me. Whatever love I have for physics, all branches of mathematics, and history is because I followed his way of studying them.

Oh, I again went away from Chaandni- so “Parinda” and “Chaandni” were the two movies the two of us saw back-to-back. “Chaandni” was a typical triangular love story. To start of it is a simple love story where the girl- Chaandni (Sridevi)- is wooed not-so-easily by the guy- Rohit (Rishi Kapoor). But the guys’ family has an issue with the alliance but accept it because their ‘only’ son is adamant. They go ahead have an engagement etc. But unfortunately, Rohit meets with an accident and is bound to a wheel chair. His family decides that this is the best time to humiliate the girl and so Rohit is forced to break-off the engagement so that the girl doesn’t have to face his family’s behaviour.

Now what does the girl do? She leaves Delhi, comes to Mumbai and lands a job in Lalit’s (Vinod Khanna) office. He is already pining for his dead wife when he falls in love with her, she takes some time to reciprocate though she is always civil to him and his mother. The next twist in the story comes when Lalit meets Rohit in Switzerland, where he has gone for business and Rohit has come for treatment. They become friends and decide that on returning to India they will introduce their respective girl friends and also marry on the same day etc. Isn’t that enough to twist the story further and make it a triangle?

As for the songs posted on the blog this date in 2009 – here they are

Lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai (Chaandni)(1989) 944 21-Nar-2009

This will be the 7th song from “Chaandni” which had Shiv-Hari as music directors and Anand Bakshi as lyricist. I cannot keep myself from saying: Sridevi looks so pretty and baby-like in this song, actually she looks like a baby through the movie. This song is shot on the streets of Delhi or New Delhi. I would like it if the Dilliwale followers of the blog help in identifying the locations. It will be nice to know. 🙂

This song is also in memory of the aforementioned friend who loved to ape Rishi Kapoor and his sunglasses and sweaters. This friend was also a Dilliwala for a brief period of his life.

How many times have we heard the refrain- real life imitating reel life? Or someone says exactly as in the movies. Well I experienced it last year.

Hullo to atuldom

Today is the 76th birthday of Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma of the Shiv-Hari duo. So on this occasion I was going through the list of movies for which the duo have given music and came across this song from Yash Chopra’s Chaandni (1989). And I thought bingo! Apt song for saluting the genius of Shiv- Hari and for the celebrations in our family that begins from tomorrow.

When one talks of a movie called “Chaandni”, one normally means the Vinod Khanna, Sri Devi starrer movie of 1989.

It turns out that a movie of this title was released as far back as in 1942 as well.
