O meri chammakchallo

Posted on: March 25, 2009

When I was a young kid, I was made to believe that the hero-heroine would always be seen singing their love songs while running around trees. I am not very sure because I have not seen too many such songs.

On the other hand, I have seen songs where the leading duo would stand in a clear space in a hill and before you know, they would suddently break into a song and dance routine.

Perhaps there were trees in those places in the earlier decades, and so they could have sung their duet running around trees, but those trees were now gone leaving open spaces in their wake. So one cannot blame the new generation hero- heroine for not dancing around trees. Dancing in the open space was the modern way to go.

Also, the songs were nowhere like the high class poetry that we were used to. The songs were basic and functional.

Here is just the kind of duet song that became the norm in 1980s. It is written by Santosh Anand and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. It is picturised on Jeetendra and Reena Roy.

Lyrics

o meri chhammak chhallo
o meri chhammak chhallo do din ki hai zindgaani
o meri chhammak chhallo do din ki hai zindagaani
tu pyaar mujhe kar aise main likh doon prem kahaani
o mere raam lubhaayaa
o mere raam lubhaayaa
kyaa likhni prem kahaani
o mere raam lubhaayaa
kyaa likhni prem kahaani
mauqaa hai mauj manaa lo kab kiski rahi jawaani
o meri chhammak chhallo
o mere raam lubhaayaa

likhne kaa shauq mujhe hai likhtaa hoon dil ki baaten
likhne kaa shauq mujhe hai likhtaa hoon dil ki baaten
thodi si din ki baaten thodi raaton ki baaten
din ke kyaa taur-tareeke raaton ki neeyat kyaa hai
tum to kyaa jaano is par mausam ki chaahat kyaa hai
he dil jo kahtaa hai usko aankhon se main kahtaa hoon
dil jo kahtaa hai usko aankhon se main kahtaa hoon
dil ki haalat ko samjho rut hai kitni mastaani
o mere raam lubhaayaa
o mere raam lubhaayaa
kyaa likhni prem kahaani
mauqaa hai mauj manaa lo kab kiski rahi jawaani
o meri chhammak chhallo
o mere raam lubhaayaa

sun-sun kar bol bole meraa dil baithaa jaaye
sun-sun kar bol bole meraa dil baithaa jaaye
pyaase armaanon waalaa saawan ye beetaa jaaye
mujhko khud hosh nahin thaa sach much main be asar thaa
nazron mein tum hi tum the mausam se bekhabar thaa
ab to kuchh khair-khabar lo sun lo ghanghor anaadi
manzil pe aa ke bhatki meri yauvan ki gaadi
karte ho kyun naadaani socho baaten mardaani
karte ho kyun naadaani socho baaten mardaani
mauqaa hai mauj manaa lo kab kiski rahi jawaani
o meri chhammak chhallo
o meri chhammak chhallo do din ki hai zindagaani
tu pyaar mujhe kar aise main likh doon prem kahaani
o mere raam lubhaayaa
o mere raam lubhaayaa
kyaa likhni prem kahaani
mauqaa hai mauj manaa lo kab kiski rahi jawaani
o meri chhammak chhallo
o mere raam lubhaayaa

Thanks for the song, Atul. The only song I can think of that was truly sung around a tree, though the chase part was missing, was the song from CID – “Aankhon hi aankhon mein ishaara ho gaya …” by Rafi and Geeta Dutt (or is it Asha?). My son took this CD many, many years back, so I will have to check on the Internet!
