Ghar aaya mera pardesi

“Awaara” was one of the earlier movies of Raj Kapoor, and considering that it was produced nearly 60 years ago, the special effects and the grand sets of this movie are quite spectacular.
Here is the song “ghar aaya mera pardesi” from the movie. The song itself is quite popular, and watching its picturisation too makes for a breathtaking spectacle.
The song is sung mainly by Lata, though Manna Dey also sings a few lines. Shailendra wrote the lyrics and Shankar Jaikishan were the music directors.

The discussion on the song “Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi” on this blog has sparked my curiosity, and I’m keen to read all the expert comments to deepen my understanding. You had mentioned a link to a short interview with Dattaram, where he talks about Lala Gangawane’s contribution during the final rehearsal, I found that fascinating.
Additionally, someone mentioned that the tune of “Ghar Aaya..” might have been inspired by an Arabic song by Umm Kulthum, Ala Balad El Mahbob https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uncqVW_EiJw.
Sir, do you have any clarity on whether SJ was influenced by this Arabic song, or was it the other way around?

The original Arabic song, ‘Ala Biladi Al Mahboub’ was rendered in an Egyptian film ‘Widad’ (1936) in which Umm Kulthum acted. It was a ‘boat song’ where boatmen were singing in chorus in which she was traveling. She liked the song so much that she recorded this song in her voice.

So, the original Arabic song is of 1936 and S-J used the tune for the mukhda of part-2 of the song under discussion.

This popular song from AWAARA seems to be a late entry in this blog and is an all time favorite. The song appears to have more than one version in the movie and the tune is also played in the background often. Nice addition !

Actually these are 2 songs “tere bina aag” (with Lata, Manna Dey) and “ghar aaya” (Lata).
But part of the same beautiful dream sequence. I believe this was the first dream sequence in Hindi cinema. And how elaborate !!!
Raj Kapoor never compromised on his sets – though these were early days, the grandeur is there for all to see.
In this movie, the Raj-Nargis chemistry is very obvious. Especially in “dum bhar jo udhar”, it stands out.
Very nice song. The movie also was very good. One of the landmark movies of Indian cinema. And most internationally acclaimed too.
