Aaja re pardesi main to kab se khadi is paar

Posted on: May 3, 2009

I have begun to post songs from “Madhumati” (1958) these days. Here is the second song from this movie.

This is the iconic “aaja re pardesi main to kab se khadi is paar”. This must be one of the first songs to use the word “pardesi”. Lyricists with Punjabi background tended to use this term “pardesi” quite a lot in those days to describe a stranger who used to be the person the lady would crave for.

This song was written by Shailendra and its music director was Salil Chowdhary. The music is just sublime. This song, which is sung by Lata and picturised on Vyjyanti Mala has gone on to become an iconic song.

song-Aaja re pardesi (Madhumati)(1958) Singer-Lata, Lyrics- Shailendra, MD- Salil Chowdhary

Lyrics

aa jaa re. . . ae ae ae
pardesi

main to kab se khadi is paar
ye ankhiyaan thak gayin panth nihaar
aa jaa re. . . ae ae ae
pardesi
main to kab se khadi is paar
ye ankhiyaan thak gayin panth nihaar
aa jaa re. . .  pardesi

main diye ki aisi baati
jal na saki jo bujh bhi na paati
main diye ki aisi baati
jal na saki jo bujh bhi na paati
aa mil mere jeevan saathi oo oo
aa jaa re main to kab se khadi is paar
ye ankhiyaan thak gayin panth nihaar
aa jaa re. . . ae ae ae
pardesi

tum sang janam janam ke phere
bhool gaye kyun saajan mere
tum sang janam janam ke phere
bhool gaye kyun saajan mere
tadpat hoon main saanjh sawere oo oo
aa jaa re main to kab se khadi is paar
ye ankhiyaan thak gayin panth nihaar
aa jaa re. . . ae ae ae
pardesi

main nadiya phir bhi main pyaasi
bhed ye gehra baat zara si
main nadiya phir bhi main pyaasi
bhed ye gehra baat zara si
bin tere har saans udaasi oo oo
aa jaa re main to kab se khadi is paar
ye ankhiyaan thak gayin panth nihaar
aa jaa re. . . ae ae ae
pardesi

What a delightful melody! Also, I am not the only one to notice that the instrumental interlude in this song is used as the main melody for the other song in this film: Ghadi Ghadi Mora Dil Dhadke

Yes. That is a good observation.

Can you translate this…?

thak gayin panth nihaar

thanks

“Ye ankhiyaan thak gayin path nihaar” means “these eyes have got tired from waiting”

I tried to find “Nihaar” on the web and the best I could find is:

nihar – meaning mist, fog, or dew

is nihar same as “nihaar” ?

thanks

After a lot of digging this is what I think it means….

“these eyes have gotten tired while admiring you”

िहार – to admire someone while looking

“Nihaarnaa” means “staring at” or “looking at”. ” panth nihaarnaa”In the context of this song means “looking at the path, waiting for the beloved to arrive”. one has to take the figurative meaning, not the literal meaning.
