I had posted a nice song sung by Khursheed from “Tansen” (1943) in the past. Here is another song of the same genre where she sings about baadal and ghata.
This is a song recorded in early 1940s, when the recording quality as well as singing in movies was just evolving. Considering all that, this song is just amazing. Khursheed sings a wonder song based on raag malhaar. Her taans at the beginning are nice to listen to. The voice sounds so amazingly fresh and clear.
This song was written by Pt Indra Chandra and the music was composed by Khemchand Prakash. What a gem from the earlier days of Bollywood movie singing ! This song sounds like it should be a timeless classic rather than a forgotten song from the distant past.
The story of this movie is about Tansen of course. Tansen, the legendary court singer of Akbar, sings Raag Deepak and that causes unbearable summer conditions in the country. As an antidote to that, raag malhar needed to be sung and there was no one who could sing it. Knowing this Tani (Khursheed) sings Raag megh malhaar and the rain gods relent.
I must say that this amazing song indeed does full justice to a movie made on a topic like Tansen.
