Waqt waqt ki baat hai

Rajesh Khanna’s decline from his superstardom began in the second half of 1970s. During this period, he worked in a few movies which have been consigned to the dustbin of history. How many people, for instance recall this movie called “Bhola Bhala” ? Very few indeed.
And this song from “Bholaa Bhaalaa” in fact very aptly sums up the fate of Rajesh Khanna. It was just a few years ago that Rajesh Khanna could do no wrong, and now, nothing seeme to be going right for him. The times had changed, and changed for ever. And this song puts it very appropriately viz “Waqt waqt ki baat hai”.
This song is a drunkard song sung by Kishore Kumar and it sums up the feeligs of a man who has fallen from grace and is seeing bad days. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and R D Burman is the music director.

Lyrics
hahahaha
kal tak main akelaa thaa
aaj zamaanaa saath hai
waqt waqt ki baat hai
samajhe naa
waqt waqt ki baat hai
kal tak main akelaa thaa
aaj zamaanaa saath hai
waqt waqt ki baat hai
waqt waqt ki baat hai
jab itnaa mashoor naa thaa yaaron meraa naam
tab paani naa miltaa thaa ab milte hain jaam
kal ye raat andheri thi
aaj suhaani raat hai
he waqt waqt ki baat hai
waqt waqt ki baat hai
sunkar meri baaton ko hai duniyaa hairaan
dekhte rah gaye sab maine maar liyaa maidaan
kal dil mein veeraani thi
aaj magar baaraat hai
he waqt waqt ki baat hai
waqt waqt ki baat hai
aaj tu jaanegi mujhko ai mere mahboob
bholaa bhaalaa hoon lekin aadmi hoon main khoob
kal thaa jis kaa intezaar aaj wo mulaaqaat hai
he waqt waqt ki baat hai
waqt waqt ki baat hai
kal tak main akelaa thaa
aaj zamaanaa saath hai
he waqt waqt ki baat hai
waqt waqt ki baat hai

Atulji, as you have rightly said in your write up, this movie and its songs deserved better fate. And such a wonderful output from the Kishore Kumar-Anand Bakshi- RDB team for Rajesh Khanna, which had given us ‘n’ number of gems.
Really “Waqt Waqt Ki Baat Hai”

Bhola Bhala’s is a sad case. Rajesh plays a double role, one of an insurance agent Ram (who is a bhola bhala) and the other of a daku Natthu. The parts where he plays Ram are pretty fantastic in terms of the dialogue, his performance, etc. But the moment the daku comes into the film, it becomes a bore. And his Natthu persona is dubbed in Kader Khan’s voice depriving it of Kaka’s great strength–his dialogue delivery. I understand the film was mired in some controversy vis-a-vis Salim Javed who were supposed to have begun scripting it, but fell out with Kaka, and the daku’s role which was supposed to have been played by either Sunil Dutt or Vinod Khanna, can’t remember. And of course, the film suffered as a consequence.
In any event, as far as this song is concerned, Ram the insurance agent was being felicitated because he closed a big case and this song is actually celebrating his success which is why it goes “kal tak main akelaa thaa, aaj zamaanaa saath hai”.
The film has a couple of other nice ones, ‘Jhuk gayi aankhen’ with Moushumi Chatterjee and ‘Kali kali raaton mein neend nahin ati’ with Rekha. The latter’s one of Kaka’s signature rain songs 😉 Noone could do rain song better than our Kaka 😀
