Hullo Atuldom
Bindu Nanubhai Desai (known to us as Bindu) turns 85 today. She has been an entertainer since the 1960s. Her father Nanubhai Desai was a film producer who died when she was about 13. And like many others of that period, like (for example) the Mangeshkar sisters in the 1940s, the burden of earning money fell on her shoulders as she was the eldest of seven siblings. She made her debut in 1962 as Mala Sinha’s daughter in ‘Anpadh”. (An interesting trivia is that Bindu’s cousin Aruna Irani played the character of the young Mala Sinha in that film). The very classical music based song ‘jiya le gayo ji mora’ was filmed on her.
1969 was a breakthrough year for Bindu as her performances in ‘Ittefaq’ & Do Raaste’ got her nominations for the Filmfare Best Supporting actress award. ‘Dastaan’, ‘Abhimaan’, ‘Hawas’, ‘Imtihan’, ‘Arjun Pandit’ were the other films which got her Filmfare Award nominations; though I doubt she ever won an award at the Filmfares. She had a very supportive husband in Champaklal Zaveri and she could take up bold, vampish roles, which required her to wear garish, revealing costumes for her dance numbers which used to be called ‘CABARETS’ back then in modern parlance they will be called ‘ITEM NUMBERS’.
I think the first time I saw this lady on screen was when she played Shabnam (in Kati Patang) and announced it to the world through this song.
Bindu’s sister Jaya is married to music director Laxmikant of the Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo. She is a motherly figure to her niece & nephews; Laxmikant & Jaya’s children; Rajeswari (singer), Rishikesh (actor), & Abhijeet Kudalkar (television producer). Another sister of Bindu’s Reshma also acted in a few films in the early 1970s. This elegant lady had hung up her dancing shoes in the late 1990s when she had some lower-back issues but was still seen playing characters of the sweet or wicked mother-in-law, doting aunt, etc till 2014 when a delayed film ‘Mukka’ released. These days we can see her on reality shows like Indian Idol as guest judge on television.
For wishing this beautiful, dancer-actress a very Happy and peaceful birthday we will have a song from the 1976 released “Santaan”. The song seems to be a stage song (I don’t remember exactly) which has Bindu dance a medley of dance-forms.
“Santaan” was produced & directed by Mohan Segal. It had music by Laxmikant Pyarelal & Verma Malik was the lyricist. Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar & Mukesh were the playback singers used for the five songs. The blog has the following four:-

Today we YYIIPPEEEE! ‘Santaan’.
The film had Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Jeetendra, Rekha, Utpal Dutt, Bindu, Johnny Walker, Satyen Kappu, Master Raju, Roohi etc in the cast.
This was the story of the film
Dinanath (Ashok Kumar) is a labourer, who is determined to educate his son Kishore (Satyen Kappu), make him a doctor and get him married to his friend’s daughter Shanu (Ruhi) as promised to his friend on the death-bed. Kishore promises to marry Shanu and makes her pregnant. But unfortunately, he has other plans of making quick money. He marries Lata (Bindu) who is very rich. They neglect and insult his parents. Shanu gives birth to a girl, Parvati (again Ruhi). Lata gives birth to a boy, Ravi (Jeetendra). Dinanath becomes blind and his wife Tulsi (Nirupa Roy) works as a housemaid in the household of her own son, without disclosing her identity. Ravi grows up in her hands, develops lot of affection for Dinanath, Tulsi & Parvati. After 20 years Tulsi reveals the truth while breathing her last. Kishore will not attend her funeral, because of his status in the society. Now Ravi decides to teach his parents a lesson for ill-treating his grandparents with the help of Advocate Baldev Raj (Utpal Dutt) and his daughter Sarita (Rekha).
Last weekend, we lost our beloved Asha Tai and I was contemplating a post as a tribute to a singer who’s work I simply love. But I was at a loss for words. Also, I didn’t want to remember her with a somber song though she excelled in that genre -remember ‘ab ke baras bhej bhaiyya ko baabul’ or ‘chain se humko kabhi aapne jeene na diya’ and so many more. I wanted a song in the genre of ‘jhumka gira re’, ‘sun sun sun didi tere liye ek rishta aaya hai’, ‘daiyya re daiyya kahan aa phasi’ or any song that would be a dance number with a ‘ITEM Number ‘ tag to it. I wanted a song through which we could see her dimpled-smile seeping through. A song that oozed the energy and gusto that she sang them with. I hope the song with this post will help us visualize the smile, energy, gusto of the singing legend. May she find peace ateast now.
