Mythological movies of Bollywood tended to be C grade movies in Bollywood and they, like stealth bombers escaped the radars of mainstream movie audiences almost entirely.
“Veer Bhimsen”(1964) was very much a mythological movie. As the name suggests, this movie was about the Mahabharat character Bhim, regarded as the strongest man of his time ( possessing the strength of 100 elephants, no less).
And naturally, this role was tailormade for Dara Singh. And he indeed plays the title role of Bhim in this movie. Now Bhim, the second among five Pandav brothers shared one wife, viz Draupadi, but every brother had separate wives of their own which they did not need to share with other brothers. For instance, Bhim had met a demoness called Hidimba and had married her.
This song shows demoness Hidimba wooing Bhim by singing a seductive song. And guess who plays Hidimba the demoness ? It is that pretty Mumtaz. Now demonesses are expected to look huge, dark and ugly, but no one is complaining if the Bollywood version of Hidimba is Mumtaz.
And what about the song ? I was neither aware of the movie nor of the song, but what a song ! What a song ! This has got to be one of the best songs sung by Asha Bhonsle. C Ramchandra is the music director. I had guessed that such lyrics could only be written by Pradeep, and I was proved right.
It is an amazing song which few people may be aware of. It is my pleasure to bring this song to the notice of music lovers.
