Paas baitho tabeeyat bahal jaayegi

Posted on: June 21, 2009

This Rafi song is a well known song, but other details about this song are not all that well known. the reasons are obvious. This song is from an obscure movie with obscure actors etc.

This song is from “Punar Milan” (1964). It was a C grade movie in which Jagdeep was hero and Ameeta was the heroine. Lyrics of this song were written by Indeewar and C Arjan was the music director.

This song was picturised on Jagdeep and Ameeta, of course, and it is one of many Rafi songs that were sung for obscure actors and which still managed to rise above the mediocrity of the movie and the actor.

Song-Paas baitho tabiyat bahal jaayegi (Punar Milan) (1964) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Indeewar, MD- C Arjun

Lyrics

paas baitho tabeeyat bahal jaayegi
maut bhi aa gayi ho to tal jaayegi
paas baitho tabeeyat bahal jaayegi
maut bhi aa gayi ho to tal jaayegi

dhaar kaajal ki tum aur teekhi karo
maang honthon ki meethi hansi se bharo
zindagi jhoomne par machal jaayegi
maut bhi aa gayi ho to tal jaayegi
paas baitho tabeeyat bahal jaayegi
maut bhi aa gayi ho to tal jaayegi

ham ne maanaa ke chhaayi hai kaali ghataa
gore gaalon se gesoo hataa do zaraa
is andhere mein ik shammaa jal jaayegi
maut bhi aa gayi ho to tal jaayegi
paas baitho tabeeyat bahal jaayegi
maut bhi aa gayi ho to tal jaayegi

gham ne chhedaa hamen, tum na chhedaa karo
jo tumhaare hain un se na pardaa karo
muskuraa do tamannaa nikal jaayegi
maut bhi aa gayi ho to tal jaayegi
paas baitho tabeeyat bahal jaayegi
maut bhi aa gayi ho to tal jaayegi

Arrey, today is proving to be a bonanza day for me.
I love this song by Rafi saab.
Btw, I like Ameeta a lot – I loved her in Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Tumsa Nahin Dekha and Mere Mehboob. Very sweet, she was in all these movies.

What a great song! I always thought this was sung for Dharmendra or Manoj, but see how Rafi could do so much even for unknown heroes. It is a testimony to his greatness.

Indeed, this is a great song sung for a lesser hero. Rafi sang many such great songs for lesser known actors.

I have seen all the three but don’t remember her. But he is right. she is indeed very sweet. Sort of reminds me of Mala Sinha, but a little bit more serious and weighty.

A snippet from an article by Raju Bharatan on this great singer related to this song.—————————-

It was Shivkumar Saroj, the sensitive Radio Ceylon announcer, who drew our attention first to the tuning artistry of another modest composer: C Arjun. When I met C Arjun much later, he told me that he felt very proud that he had at least created a ghazal that could come somewhere near a Madan Mohan composition. I wanted special attention to this my coveted ghazal from my singer but all good singers available were bigger than the film for which I had composed it! revealed Arjun. It was with great hesitation, therefore, that I approached Rafi Saab to render my ghazal, so feelingly written by Indivar. And Rafi Saab, without bothering about the small payment we were in a position to make, said it was one of the best ghazals that had fallen to his lot and he would give it everything that he had.

Rafi certainly gave that C Arjun ghazal everything he had, that is how it came over to us Paas baitho tabiyat behal jaayegi maut bhi aa gayi to hal jaayegi in Punarmilan. This ghazal proves, if proof is needed, that no composer was too small for Rafi as long as the composition was great.

@Shah, wonderful anecdote. This proves he was not only the greatest ever singer but a great human being.

Atul ji,
Recently,Dr.Satyavir Yadav recounted how this song took birth.C.Arjun had narrated this incident to Amin Sayani in an interview for Binaca Geetmala.
Once Arjun and Indivar were travelling in a bus, which was crowded.A young beautiful girl was standing in the gangway near them. After some time Indiwar asked Arjun to get up and offer his seat to her.Surprised, but he did so.The girl sat by Indivar’s side, but he did not speak anything to her at all. After the girl got down,Arjun asked him why he did this,Indivar said, first to go his house.
Once inside Arjun’s house,Indivar wrote the above song in just 15 minutes and asked Arjun to tune it.Indivar was inspired by that girl. Both of them made the song tune and slept at 4 a.m.
The above song is easily one of Rafi’s great songs.

THANKS Arunkumar Dshmukh sahab for my reference here.
I listened to that interview of C.Arjun by Ameen Sayani on radio nearly 25-30 yrs ago & had faint memoirs of the exact discussion between them but surely knew the crux of the story behind the creation of this incomparable gem… I received some mails in the mean time to authenticate my story & as a response to it I searched the whole lot of net including Ameen Sayani’ s pages to find this story. And in the end, I got the exact Transcription of this whole interview on net in google pages, though later, this link also appeared in AK’s blog. The radio was ‘Vividh Bharti’ & the prog. was “Sangeet ke Sitaron ki Mehfil” ( though I had mentioned radio as Ceylon & prog. as Binaca Geetmala because I had faint memoirs about them.& thiught it must have been radio ceylon & Binaca geetmala … both synonym to Amin Sayani ).

Here is the exact transcript of this interview with regard to the story behind this gem in my comments below … (pasting it as it appears in transcript) ..

Indeevar-ji mere saamne, mere baaju mein ek laDkee khaDee thi … Indeevar-ji
usey ghaDi ghaDi dekh raha tha aur kuchh soch raha tha, maine dekhaa ki woh kuchh soch raha hai, to itne mein uske paas baaju mein jo aadmi baiThaa tha woh uThaa aur main baiTh gaya. Bolaa ‘dekhaa, tumne kaam Kharaab kar diya mera’. Maine

Bolaa “paas baiTho tabeeyat bahal jaayegi”, ab yeh poora kaise hogaa jab tak tu yahaan baiTha huya hai, tu uTh yahaan se’. (AS laughs). maine kahaa ‘achchha
Indeevar-ji, main uThtaa hoon kyunki Garaz meri hai, gaana mujhe
likhwaane ka hai’, to main uTh gaya wahaan se.
AS: achchha achchha, to gana aisa hai ki paas uThkar khaDe ho jaayo to tabeeyat bahal jaayegi (CA laughs), aur woh laDkee jab baiTh gayi paas mein to…

Dr Satyavir Sir,
Whenever I listen any old song, I first open ASAD encyclopaedia for more information about that particular song. I was so gladdened to read your wonderful anecdote almost after 11 years.
Atul ji thanks for such wonderful blog.
