“Muqaddar Ka Sikandar” (1978) was not a movie that I liked much but others liked it very much. To keep up with others who liked it, I too watched it, and then I wondered what the fuss was all about.
Here is a song from this movie that was the most popular among all its songs. This song “O saathi re tere bina bhi kya jeena” is sung separately by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. It is the Kishore Kumar version that became more popular.
Here is this song sung by Kishore Kumar and picturised on Amitabh Bachchan as a party song. In this song, Amitabh Bachchan sings this song for Rakhi, whom he knows since childhood and has a crush on her. Rakhi does not remember her from those childhood days and is naturally unawre about his crush on her.
Amitabh Bachchan’s childhood role was played by Master Mayur and he was shown with identical hairstyle and identical dress as the grownup Amitabh bachchan sports. Just imagine a person maintaining identical hairstyle throughout his life. It can happen only in Bollywood movies.
Coming to the song, it was written by Anjaan and the music direction was by Kalyanji Anandji.

Lyrics
lalalala lalalalala
lalalalalalalla hmm
o saathi re, tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
o saathi re, tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
phoolon mein kaliyon mein, sapnon ki galiyon mein
phoolon mein kaliyon mein, sapnon ki galiyon mein
tere binaa kuchh kahin na
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
o saathi re, tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
har dhadkan mein pyaas hai teri, saanson mein teri khushboo hai
is dharti se us ambar tak, meri nazar mein tu hi tu hai
pyaar ye toote na .
pyaar ye toote na, tu mujhse roothe na, saath ye chhoote kabhi na
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
o saathi re tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
tujh bin jogan meri raaten, tujh bin mere din banjaare
meraa jeewan jalti dhooni, bujhe-bujhe mere sapane saare
tere binaa meri
tere binaa meri, mere binaa teri, ye zindagi zindagi na
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
o saathi re tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa
tere binaa bhi kyaa jeenaa

I don’t know why I like this movie… I wasn’t even born when this movie was released and just saw it 5-6 years back. I think what largely contributed me liking this movie are the songs. Even before seeing the movie I’d heard many of its tracks and just loved them. What I think made this movie a big success, along with the starcast and songs, is the concept. During the time period when the movie was released the lead characters almost never died, and it was something new for the audiences.
This song is one of my Kishore Kumar favs! keep it up!

Another audio bit version lyric

This movie was a super-duper hit when it was released. I refused to see it – and saw it for the first time only in 1999. Hated it. I don’t like this “saathi re” song. I also do not like “salaam-e-ishq”.
