Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Kuchh naa kaho kuchh bhi naa kaho

Posted on: September 5, 2009

I can watch Bollywood songs any time, but ask me to watch a Bollywood movie containing the same songs and I develop cold feet. I find that the songs are often the only redeeming part of many movies.

That is certainly the case with “1942, a love story”. This movie is supposed to be a love story in the backdrop of India of 1942. But the lead actors dress, act and behave like people of 1990s when this movie was made. Just look at the hairstyle and dress of Manisha Koirala, for example, and compare that with the dresses of an actual Bollywood movie of that era. 1942 , eh ! So much for authenticity.

With songs, you do not have to think of such matters, because one can enjoy these songs in isolation. And in fact that is the only way to enjoy the songs of “1942, a love story”.

I have posted one song from this movie in the past. Here is another song. This song “Kuchh na kaho, kuchh bhi na kaho” is sung by Kumar Sanu. The song is written by Jawed Akhtar and the music is composed by R D Burman. This movie in fact was the swan song of R D Burman and it was released two years after R D Burman had died, almost unsung, in 1991. And when the songs of this movie hit the eardrums of public, the music of this movie took the nation by storm. And it was a welcome storm too, since Bollywood movie music was passing through a bad phase at that time. The music of this song, (and indeed of all songs from this movie) is divine.

PS-This movie had a Lata version too. So this movie is a multiple version song.

“1942 A love story” (1994) had six songs in it. All the songs of the movie have been covered in the blog. Here are the links of the other songs of the movie:

Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa lagaa(1942 A Love Story)
Pyaar huaa chupke se (1942 A Love Story)
Rimjhim rimjhim rumjhum rumjhum (1942 A Love Story)
Rooth na jaana tumse kahoon to (1942 A Love Story)
Ye safar bahut hai kathin magar (1942 A Love Story)

Song-Kuchh naa kaho kuchh bhi naa kaho (1942 A love story) (1994) Singer-Kumar Sanu/Lata Mangeshkar  Lyrics-Jawed Akhtar, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

kuchh naa kaho
kuchh bhi na kaho
kuchh na kaho
kuchh bhi na kaho
kya kahna hai
kya sunana hai
mujhko pataa hai
tumko pataa hai
samay ka ye pal
tham sa gayaa hai
aur ik pal mein
koyi nahin hai
bas ek main hoon
bas ek tum ho
kuchh na kaho
kuchh bhi na kaho

kitne gehre halke
shaam ke rang hain chalke
parwat se yoon utre baadal
jaise aanchal dhalke
kitne gehre halke
shaam ke rang hain chalke
parwat se yoon utre baadal
jaise aanchal dhalke
aur is pal mein
koyi nahin hai
bas ek main hoon
bas ek tum ho
kuchh na kaho
kuchh bhi na kaho

sulgi sulgi saansen
behki behki dhadkan
mehke mehke shaam ke saaye
pighle pighle tan mann
sulgi sulgi saansen
behki behki dhadkan
mehke mehke shaam ke saaye
pighle pighle tan mann
aur is pal mein
koyi nahin hai
bas ek main hoon
bas ek tum ho

Lovely song Atul. I prefer Ek ladki ko dekha from this movie. That is almost like a prayer. This is lovely song too.

Actually come to think of it, almost all the songs in this movie are amazing. Rhimjhim, Rooth na jana, Pyar hua chupke se are lovely melodies as well!

I found the first half somewhat OK but the second half a bit difficult to sit through. It tended to drag on and on. I think this was the movie that really brought Vidhu Vinod Chopra into the limelight.

I remember a song “ye safar bahut hai kathin magar” which I think is from this movie. I quite like that song.
Like you say, the songs of this movie were very good.

Yes, all the songs of this movie are amazing. I have posted the song “Ek ladki ko dekha” already in the past.

Lyrics of the Lata version are completely different, they need to be added.

Thanks Atul Ji, Your blog is my “go to” reference for the stories behind the songs and artists in Bollywood… I do carefully read and enjoy the new uploads from you (as I receive email notifications) but when I am in doubt about the specifics such as the lyricist or the year movie was made, etc. I find myself visiting your blog to either confirm or learn…. Much obliged with your great service for us music lovers.

RD Burman died in January 1994 and not 1991 as mentioned in the write up
