Ye raah badi mushqil hai

Posted on: September 13, 2009

Listen to this song and one may think that this is an O P Nayyar composition. I thought so too. But when I found out the details of this song, I found that this song was composed by Madan Mohan.

This song is from “Gateway of India” (1957), which was a Pradeep Kumar, Madhubala starrer. This song is a party song where this song is picturised on Anita Guha. Yes, the lady who is now known to many for her role as Santoshi Maata in the religious movie “Jai Sathoshi Maa” (1975) is the dancer in this song.

This song is sung by Geeta Dutt. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist.

Song-Ye raah badi mushqil hai (Gateway of India) (1957) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics- Rajinder Krishan, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

Ye raah badi mushqil hai
anjaan abhi tera dil hai
soorat pe na jaa
baaton mein na aa
har cheez yahaan qaatil hai
Ye raah badi mushqil hai
anjaan abhi tera dil hai

kaaghaz ke phool mein khushboo
kyun dhoondh raha nadaan tu
kaaghaz ke phool mein khushboo
kyun dhoondh raha nadaan tu
yahaan rang ka jaal bichhaye
baithe hain lutere har su
yahaan rang ka jaal bichhaye
baithe hain lutere har su
yahaan dil na lagaa
daaman ko bachha
ye daghaabaaz mahfil hai
Ye raah badi mushqil hai
anjaan abhi tera dil hai

lahraati chamakti reti
paani ka hai dhokha deti
lahraati chamakti reti
paani ka hai dhokha deti
masoom nazar kya jaane
ye sholon ki hai kheti
masoom nazar kya jaane
ye sholon ki hai kheti
mat pyaas bujha
dhokhe mein naa aa
ye badi tedhi manzil hai
Ye raah badi mushqil hai
anjaan abhi tera dil hai
soorat pe na jaa
baaton mein na aa
har cheez yahaan qaatil hai
Ye raah badi mushqil hai
anjaan abhi tera dil hai

Also, resembles SD Burman style of music like in Baazi, Jaal etc.

I have noticed ‘Courtesy appearance – Chic Choclate and His Music Makers’ in the movie’s titles. Chic Choclate was an assistant to MD C Ramchandra and he had also given music direction in NAADAAN. My guess is that it may be Chic Choclate’s orchestra in the picturisation of this song and the close up a trumpet player appearing at 1:44 may be of Chic Choclate himself.
