Raahi mil gaye raahon mein

Posted on: September 15, 2009

“Dil Deke Dekho” (1959) was one of the earlier Shammi Kapoor movies where Shammi Kapoor was seen with his tradmark mannerisms.

This song is a car song, where Shammi Kapoor is driving and a very young Asha Parekh is seated in the passenger seat. The car is obviously a US make convertible, seeing that it is a left hand drive vehicle.

They are followed close behind by Shammi Kapoor’s trusted sidekick, Rajendranath, wearing a vest and driving a right hand drive car.

Rafi sings this song with the usual gusto that he reserved for Shammi Kapoor songs. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and Usha Khanna is the music director. So O P Nayyar and Usha Khanna had the distinction of creating Shammi Kapoor style music before Shankar Jaikishan.

I love this song! I remember seeing it with friends (or maybe my cousins!) and remarking on the fact that the car at the back, being driven by Rajendranath, is actually being towed by the first car, and you can see the tow rope every now and then! I have absolutely no idea why it was being towed.

I love the energy in the song.

I love this too, and I’m *so envious* of Asha sitting next to Shammi as he drives and sings.

Plus, Rajendranath is hilarious. Lalitha—it’s being towed because Rajendranath and Asha were driving together and his car broke down—his rival for her affections, Shammi, just “happens” to come along and rescue them—but only if she will sit up front with him in his car.

Rajendranath is hilarious. But what is the explanation for Rajendranath wearing a vest ? Did he literally lose his shirt ?

He had taken it off to tinker with the car engine, and I guess never put it back on 🙂 That’s how I remember it anyway. Just looking at him usually gets me giggling—and he was quite a good-looking man too.

yes he was a good looking man, and available too- as he never married.
