In Bollywood movies,romancing and singing romantic songs have traditionally been the preserve of the hero and the heroine. Other actors were supposed to have no love lives in these movies.
There were exeptions though. A couple of comedians, namely Johny Walker and Mehmood became so popular with the movie goers thet they began to get one song to sing in each movie, where they acted. In case of Mehmood, he in fact would have a long romantic role too, with Shubha Khote playing his love angle and Dhumal playing her father. In fact, Mehmood’s role often overshadowed the role of the lead actors, much to the annoyance of some movie goers.
Johny Lever on the other hand was mostly seen singing a comedy song in a movie and that was that. But here in this movie called “Shehnaayi” (1964), he actually gets to woo a lady and sing a romantic song expressing his love for her. In fact, he is shown romancing her very much like Shammi Kapoor !
This song in fact takes place on land as well as on water, where he is seen following her in various water faring contraptions. That way, this song can be called a boat song too.
I have no idea who is the lady who plays his love interest. In Bollywood style, she initially rebuffs Johny Walker’s advances, but is seen dancing in the last stanza of the song, indicating her tacit approval for his advances.
Rajinder Krishan wrote the song, and Ravi composed the music.
