Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Raat suhaani jhoome jawaani

Posted on: October 24, 2009

I have repeatedly stressed the fact that there was nothing B grade about the music of these so called B and C grade movies. But as far as the public were concerned, the music of these movies would fail to catch up, mainly because of lack of exposure. Since most people would not watch these movies, they would not be aware of these songs, and the records of these songs would not be made and sold as a result of non popularity of these songs. So it was a catch 22 situation for the music of B grade movies.

Despite all these handicaps, the music of some B grade movies broke the grade barrier in no uncertain terms. Their music became as popular as any A grade movies.

The biggest such example was “Janam Janam Ke Phere”(1957), whose song “Zara saamne to aao chhaliye” became the most popular song of the year 1957 in Binaca geetmala. S N Tripathi was the music director. Two yeras later, S N Tripathi’s movie “Rani Roopmati” (1959) also broke this grade barrier and the songs of this movie also became very popular.

I have posted two songs from “Rani Roopmati” including “Laut ke aaja mere meet” which was the most popular song from this movie (it stood sixth in Binaca geetmala final of 1959). The songs that are not yet posted are also very nice songs to listen to. Here is a lovely song from this movie. It is sun by Lata and it is picturised on the pretty looking Nalini Chonkar who in this song is seen trying to seduce Bharat Bhooshan. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist.

Lyrics

raat suhaani, jhoome jawaani
dil hai deewaanaa haay tere liye
aa dil milaa le, duniyaa basaa le
dil hai deewaanaa haay tere liye,
tere liye
o raat suhaani

o bewafaa mat der lagaa
o bewafaa mat der lagaa
soyaa huaa mat dard jagaa
soyaa huaa mat dard jagaa
mast bahaaren tujh ko pukaaren
mast bahaaren tujh ko pukaaren
dil hai deewaanaa haay tere liye
tere liye
o raat suhaani

rut hai nasheeli mausam jawaan
rut hai nasheeli mausam jawaan
chubhne lagi hai thandi hawaa
chubhne lagi hai thandi hawaa
chupke se aajaa, dil mein samaa jaa
chupke se aajaa, dil mein samaa jaa
dil hai deewaanaa haay tere liye
tere liye
o raat suhaani, jhoome jawaani
dil hai deewaanaa haay tere liye
tere liye
o raat suhaani

Khyati ji,
some interesting trivia for you……
NALINI was a very common name in the 40s and 50s and there were not less than 6 NALINIs in Hindi films at a time in the period 1940 to 1955.
1. Nalini Jayawant
2. Nalini Tarkhad
3. Nalini Nagpurkar
4. Nalini Borkar
5. Nalini Dhere
6. Nalini Gupte

Later from 1952 to 1978 there were 2 more…
1. Nalini Saraf (who was later known as Seema Deo-Ramesh Deo’s wife) and
2. Nalini Chonkar

Thanks Arunji. Aapne to “Nalinis from Hindi Cinema” ki dictionary bana di mere liye. I knew only our beautiful Nalini Jaywant. Now I know Nalini Chonkar because of you, Prakashji & Sadanandji. I was totally clue less that Seema Deo actually is Nalini Saraf. (Any relation with Ashok Saraf?)
Itni saari Nalinis ko pehchan ne ke liye to mujhe bahut saal lag jaayenge.

Please watch 1960 movie CHAAND MERE AAJAA:
In that movie one lata sad song is there(premdhawan-chitragupt),picturised on Bharat bhushan and heroine nanda.
In that song also you can see her in a white saaree, walking with bharat bhushan, while nanda sings that melodious sad song:
“Sajnaa, sajnaa, kaahe bhool gaye din pyaar ke,sajnaa main tho haari gayee re tere pyaar mein”(This song is there in our blog)

Further, Nalini chonkar starred in
1)Anjaan hai koi(1960)(with feroze khan)
2)Namasteji(1965)(with mehmood,ameeta)
3)Madan manjari(1960)(with manhar desai)
4)Shravan kumar(1960)
5)Saazish(1959)(with Ranjan)
6)Patthardil(padmini kolhapure starrer-1985)

It feels so great when you can “identify”a person. I always feel uncomfortable if I want to know a peson (mostly from movies) and can’t identify him/her. Before I used to scratch my head to find the answer, but now, I have this blog and people like you (Encyclopedia of Hindi Cinema). Thanks again.
