Gayaa bachpan jo aayi jawaani

Posted on: June 11, 2010

I have just realised that I have not posted even a single song from “Aankhon Aankhon Mein” (1972). When I was growing up, the songs of this movie were all over the loudspeakers and radio, and kids like me simply loved these songs. In my case, I enjoyed listening to those songs despite being unaware about the movie those songs were from.

Yes, it is true. Apart from the title song containing the word “aankhon aankon mein”, I was not aware that many of the songs that I so loved there were from this movie. I have become aware of those songs belonging to this movie only recently, thanks to the farmaishes from my readers.

So “Aankhon Aankhon Mein” (1972) makes its debut in this blog with this cute party song. It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Rakhi, Rakesh Roshan and others. Rakhi, normally known to play serious sedate roles, is seen letting her hair down and dancing with abandon in this song. It is only when the song ends that she comes out of her trance and realises that she was dancing. And she is mightily embarrassed. Cute !

The song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri. It is a timepass song, but the creativity of the lyricist even for a light hearted song like this is so clearly visible. “Churi patang ho gayi” (chunri flew like a kite),mere hothon ki surkhi machalke chunariya ka rang ho gayi (my lips acquired the colour of my chunri) etc. What wonderful imagination from the lyricist ! It is lyrics like this that have helped old songs remain in our collective memories even after the passage of several decades.

Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan. If I was not aware of this fact, I would have thought that the music was so reminiscent of Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music style. But then those were the days when R D Burman and Laxmikant Pyarelal were ruling the roost, and other music directors were trying to imitate their music style to survive. And that included the redoubtable duo of Shankar Jaikishan too. Incidentally, Jaikishan was no more by th time this movie was released, though Shankar continued to give music under the name of Shankar Jaikishan.

This song is posted on the farmaish of Peevesie’s mom, a regular reader of this blog, who is known for pulling me up when I am unable to identify Madhubala in her old movies. 🙂

Lyrics

gaya bachpan
gaya bachpan jo aayi jawaani
to chunri patang ho gayi
gaya bachpan jo aayi jawaani
to chunri patang ho gayi
aisi palkon mein
aisi palkon mein chhaayi jo masti
tabeeyat malang ho gayi
aisi palkon mein chhaayi jo masti
tabeeyat malang ho gayi
gaya bachpan

hirni ki chaal
bas gayi meri chal mein
haan haan ho ho
haan haan ho ho
hirni ki chaal bas gayi meri chal mein
do gaz lambi ho gayi ek saal mein
do gaz lambi ho gayi ek saal mein
de de bachpan
de de bachpan
tu le le jawaani
jawaani se main tang ho gayi
de de bachpan
tu le le jawaani
jawaani se main tang ho gayi
gaya bachpan jo aayi jawaani
to chunri patang ho gayi
gayaa bachpan

dekhaa jo tujhko
uthi aisi halchal
lala lalalala
lalal lalala
dekhaa jo tujhko
uthi aisi halchal
mujhse lipat gayaa besharam aanchal
mujhse lipat gayaa besharam aanchal
mere hothon ki
mere hothon ki surkhi machalke
chunariya ka rang ho gayi
mere hothon ki surkhi machalke
chunariya ka rang ho gayi
gayaa bachpan jo aayi jawaani
to chunri patang ho gayi
gayaa bachpan

dilwaale baithen meri raahen gher ke
haan haan ho ho
haan haan ho ho
dilwaale baithen meri raahen gher ke
ruk jaayen wahin jahaan dekhoon munh pher ke
ruk jaayen wahin jahaan dekhoon munh pher ke
kisi babu se
angrezi babu se
kisi babu se
mil gayin jo ankhiyaan
to ankhiyon ki jang ho gayi
kisi babu se
mil gayin jo ankhiyaan
to ankhiyon ki jang ho gayi
gayaa bachpan jo aayi jaawani
to chunri patang ho gayi
aisi palkon mein chhaayi jo masti
tabeeyat malang ho gayi
gaya bachpan

Incidentally, it was Late Jaikishan’s swan song that is last recorded song by Jaikishan. SJ were there for nearly 2 decades. The remark – LP or RD-ish song is not digestible. It is other way round.
