‘Sher Dil’ (1965) was produced by Bany Talwar and was directed by Chand. The cast included Dara Singh, Parveen Chaudhary, Jayant, Uma Dutt, Padma Chavan, Shakila Bano Bhopali, Bhagwan, Nazir Kashmiri, Gopal, Sujata etc.

Multiples copies of the VCDs of the film are available on the video sharing platforms. Unfortunately, the video and audio qualities are very poor. Also in some places, the continuity is lost and the scenes are repeated. I found that about two-third of the film constitute the action parts comprising sword fights, wrestling bouts, horse-riding fights etc. So, it is clear that the film was made keeping in mind the front benchers and the fans of Dara Singh who used to watch those days his wrestling bouts at Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Worli, Mumbai.

I have taken the help of the synopsis of the film’s story from the song book of the film to join the missing links in the film’s VCD to make the story concise.

Salim (Dara Singh) and Jabar (Jayant) are friends who have escaped from the prison in Yamen to the city of Baghdad. While they were discussing as to what will be their next course of action, an advance troops ahead of Princess Naseem Bano’s (Parveen Chaudhary) visit in palanquin are clearing the path violently by pushing the people and sometime hitting them with whip which is not liked by Salim. He confronts one the troopers and subdues him after a long fight. Princess is impressed with Salim’s heroic fights and admires his courage while Salim falls in love with her. In another incidence, Princess Naseem is saved by Salim from a gang of bandits. Both falls in love with each other. But there is a class difference, Salim is a commoner. So, Princess Naseem proposes to the King to appoints Salim as her bodyguard. However, Salim is required to compete with the strongest man in a wrestling bout. Salim wins the bout and becomes Princess Naseem’s bodyguard.

Jabar on the other hand joins a gang of bandits. During one of his operations, he sees Mumtaz (Padma Chavan). He does not harm her as he likes her. Instead, he safely drops her at the palace. Both the friends are now in opposite camps – law enforcer versus law breaker. Even after becoming the bodyguard of Princess Naseem, Salim faces difficulties. The Vazir (Uma Dutt) is jealous of him as he has some other plans to grab the kingdom in connivance with Mumtaz to whom he has given hope to make her the queen. But Salim is an obstacle for him. He tries to kill him in more than one occasions but fails. With his life being under threat, Salim gets disguised as Sher Dil and distributes money looted from the treasury of the kingdom to the poor villagers. Whenever, he is in trouble, Jabar helps him.

The King is annoyed with Vazir as he has failed to capture Sher Dil. Mumtaz offers King that she can trace Sher Dil because she had seen him with his gang while returning to the palace. She presumes that Jabar is Sher Dil. So, in this guise, she meets Jabar in his den and caution him about Vazir’s plans to capture him. However, a drunk Jabar reveals her that he is not Sher Dil but his friend, Salim. This information is passed on Vazir who bring this to the notice of the King. However, since there is no evidence to prove that Salim is Sher Dil, Princess Naseem dismisses the charge.

One day, Jabar, on his clandestine visit to the palace to meet his love interest, Mumtaz is shocked to see Salim with her and through their conversations, he gets an impression that Salim has fallen in love with Mumtaz. With this misunderstanding, he walks out from the palace by threatening Salim that from now onwards, they are no longer friends and he would treat him as his enemy. The fact is that it was a ploy by Mumtaz to create a rift between two friends to weaken Salim.

The Vazir makes one more attempt to kill Salim, this time by a venomous snake. But instead, the snake bites the King putting him in coma. To restore the life of the King, Salim is required to visit a dangerous place called Koh-e-Aatish to bring the needed medicines within 15-days. Princess Naseem insists on accompanying Salim. Being a dangerous assignment, Salim seeks the help from Jabar who refuses to cooperate. On the contrary, Jabar follows Salim in his journey and attempts to kill him. After overcoming all types of obstacles, Salim procures the medicine and he is on his way to Baghdad. During night transit, Jabar enters the tent to kill Salim. However, Salim overcomes Jabar and reveals him that it was Mumtaz who had falsely created an impression that he was interested in Mumtaz to create the rift in friends. Jabar soon realises his folly and both of them become the friends again.

On returning to Baghdad, Salim and Princess Naseem find that the King in coma is put in a cell by Vazir. Salim is arrested. Vazir’s plan is to let the King dies without medicine and after the King’s death, Princess Naseem will become the Queen to whom he would marry to be the King. This is a shock to Mumtaz as she was helping Vazir so that she would become his queen as promised by Vazir. She sends the message to Jabar that Salim has been put in jail and Vazir has planned to eliminate him and the King to capture the kingdom. Jabar comes with his gang of bandits and overpowers Vazir’s soldiers. Vazir kills Mumtaz on the suspicion of leaking the information to Jabar. But during the fights, Vazir gets killed when he comes under a big rock. The King is saved by the medicine who formalises Salim’s relationship with Princess Naseem.

The film had six songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri which were set to music by C Ramchandra. It is one of those films C Ramchandra composed the music after Lata Mangeshkar had decided not to associate with him under his music direction. So, Asha Bhosle had four songs in this film. Also, there was no Mohammed Rafi song. Instead, C Ramchandra himself rendered two songs, one with Asha Bhosle. Manna Dey rendered one background song. None of the six songs in the film have the magic of his compositions of the 1950s.

Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘khayaalon mein wo ab to aane lage’ which I feel is somewhat better one in terms of melody and the musical composition amongst the six songs. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle. Unfortunately, this song is missing in all the VCDs of the film that are available on-line. On the basis of the lyrics, my wide guess is that the song is picturised on Princess Naseem Bano (Parveen Chaudhary) along with her friends to express her feelings towards Salim (Dara Singh) to whom she jas fallen in love after he had rescued her from a gang of bandits.
