Ek bechaaraa pyaar kaa maaraa

Posted on: June 20, 2010

I keep mentioning that Rafi was capable of singing with unbelievable amount of energy. I have often mentioned songs where I thought that the energy level in the singing was just mind boggling.

Here is another song like that. It is from “Waaris” (1969). the song is picturised on Jeetendra and Hema Malini. From the picturisation, it would appear that it was this song that may have earned Jeetendra his sobriquet of “Jumping Jack”.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. What a versatile lyricist he was. He had teamed up with old generation greats like C Ramchandra, Madan Mohan etc is many great songs, and here he shows that he could team up suceesssfully even with the new generation music directors. Here R D Burman is the music director who had grabbed the music direction of Bollywood movie industry by the scruff of its neck and redefined music those days, that he how toytal his domination was those days.

Of course, what listeners would remember the most about this song is the energy level with which Rafi has sung this song. Just incredible !

Song-Ek bechaaraa pyaar ka maaraa (Waaris) (1969) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

laa hilaa
yara akhraa
yara akhraa
lalalala
haa

ek bechaaraa
haa
pyaar kaa maaraa
haa
raahon mein teri dekh padaa hai
daal de jaanaan
uu uu
zulfon kaa saayaa
ek bechaaraa
haa
pyaar kaa maaraa
haa
raahon mein teri dekh padaa hai
daal de jaanaan
uu uu
zulfon kaa saayaa

daaman na bachaao
nazren na churaao
behosh kar ke
hosh mein to laao
daaman na bachaao
nazren na churaao
behosh kar ke
hosh mein to laao
deewaanaa ban chukaa hoon
afsaanaa naa banaao
ek bechaaraa
haa
pyaar kaa maaraa
haa
raahon mein teri dekh padaa hai
daal de jaanaan
uu uu
zulfon kaa saayaa

pehloo mein bithaa lo
aankhon mein chhupaa lo
ae shaah-e-haseenaa
bismil ki duaa lo
pehloo mein bithaa lo
aankhon mein chhupaa lo
ae shaah-e-haseenaa
bismil ki duaa lo
kab tak rahoge tanhaa
saathi koyi banaa lo
ek bechaaraa
haa
pyaar kaa maaraa
haa
raahon mein teri dekh padaa hai
daal de jaanaan
uu uu
zulfon kaa saayaa

This was a pretty popular song when I was a kid. We used to call these type of songs “lok” songs (meaning “local roadside Romeo” songs). 🙂

Rafi saab’s energy comes across here. Talking of his energy, I would really like to see the video of “Lal lal gaal”. I was listening to it yesterday on your blog (only audio) – what energy! Must have been fun picturisation too. No video available on youtube. 😦 Maybe you can do some jugaaad? 😉

I think Jeetu was well into his Jumping Jack days by the time this movie came out. His landmark song in that respect is “Mast baharon ka main aashiq” from Farz (1967. Of course Waris, Jigri Dost, Humjoli, Aulad, Gunahon Ka Devta – all had their Jeeetu JJ doses. 🙂

Happy Birthday Atul. Love the clip of Muhammed Ali and Mohammed Rafi with the title “energy”. I think the jumping jacks came about because Jeetu was copying Shammi or trying to.
This song definitely has R.D Burman’s stamp.
