Ab mohabbat mein jo pehle thi wo taaseer nahin

Posted on: July 14, 2010

Here is a song that will be a dream come true for song lovers if they are like me.

For once, it is a rare song featuring Malika (sister of Mumtaz and later wife of Randhawa). And secondly, it is a rail song, which is a category of song that always delights me.

In this song, Manoj Kumar and Brahm Bhardwaj can also be seen. In the beginning, Malika begins to sing a few lines (presumably on her own voice) and then she is interrupted by Rafi’s voice (lip synced by Manoj Kumar). Rest of the song is “sung” by Manoj Kumar. The song, written by Akhtar Warsi Lucknowi (I guess) laments the state of affairs of love. ‘Love nowadays is not what it used to be in old days” is the general gist of this song, and the reason why love is not the same is because we no longer have girls like Laila,Heer and Shirin now a days, this song suggests. Malika (dressed in quite a modern dress) is obviously not amused.

This music is composed by Iqbal Qureshi. This song is a trivia buff’s delight, no doubt. (viz. name a rail song featuring Mumtaz’s sister). Here is this lovely rail song from “Banarasi Thug” (1962). enjoy !

Song-Ab mohabbat mein jo pahle thi wo taaseer nahin (Banarasi Thug) (1962) Singer- Rafi, Lyrics-Akhtar Warsi Lucknowi, MD-Iqbal Qureshi

Lyrics

haay
mar gaye ham
teri muhabbat mein
aaa
aaa aaa
o haay

ab muhabbat mein jo
pehle thi wo taaseer nahin
ab muhabbat mein jo
pehle thi wo taaseer nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
Laila nahin
wo Heer nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
ab wo Laila nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
Laila nahin
wo Heer nahin
ab muhabbat mein jo
pehle thi wo taaseer nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
Laila nahin
wo Heer nahin

saath marne ki tadap
ab kahaan haseenon mein
yaaron jhoothi hai chamak
husn ke nageenon mein
pyaar daulat se ye karte hain
inhen pyaar nahin
ab hamen inki wafaaon ka aitbaar nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
ab wo Laila nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
Laila nahin
wo Heer nahin
ab mohabbat mein jo
pehle thi wo taaseer nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
Laila nahin
wo Heer nahin

naa inhen paase muhabbat
na inhen paase wafaa
inka pesha hai sitam
inka shewa hai zafaa
pyaar kahti hai ye duniyaa jise wo pyaar nahin
kisko dil de ke
yahaan koi bhi dildaar nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
ab wo Laila nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
Laila nahin
wo Heer nahin
ab mohabbat mein jo
pehle thi wo taaseer nahin
ab wo Shirin Nahin
Laila nahin
wo Heer Nahin

ye haseen dhoke sanam
banke diyaa karte hain
ishq ki khaake qasam
loot liyaa karte hain
phir bhi kahte hain ye
hamse ke wafaadaar nahin
phir bhi rote hain
koi inka bhi dildaar nahin
ab wo Shirin nahin
ab wo Laila nahin
Ab wo Shirin nahin
Laila nahin
wo Heer nahin
ab mohabbat mein jo pehle thi
wo taaseer nahin
ab wo Shirin Nahin
Laila nahin
wo Heer Nahin

Heard this song for the first time today and quite liked it. Nice, lively song!

I noticed that the compartment said “Ist class – air-conditioned” but then shouldn’t the windows have been down?

Anyway, to improve my Urdu vocab what do “taaseer” and “shewa” mean?

My guess is as good as yours. I think “Taaseer” means “energy/ life”. As for “shewa”- it could be something like “habit/nature”, I guess.

The coach says I (which means first class) and it does look like an old first class (non air conditioned) coach. To the best of my knowledge, there were no air conditioned coaches in India in 1962, but I could be wrong and the movie maker may be right. who knows. 🙂
