In this blog, I post many well known songs from the past, but I get the most satisfaction when I post lesser known songs that very few people know about.
Here is one such song. I stumbled upon this song only just now. This is a sentimental song of the “Chal ud ja panchhi” category. A very young looking Nutan, playing the first tragic role of her career in “Hum Log” (1951) is considering leaving her home and near and dear ones,in what could be a fore runner of her roles in “Seema” (1955) and “Bandini” (1963). The song is sung by Lata and her voice convey the feelings of pain, hurt and helplessness extremely well. The brilliant song is written by Uddhav Kumar. Roshan is the music director.
Considering that I heard this song for the first time today, this song has done very well to grow upon me from the very first time itself. This song is truly a gem, a forgotten gem.

The tune of this song seems to have been inspired by the musical prelude to the song ‘ban mein jo bhi mehke phool’ sung by Kanan Devi, MD : R C Boral from the film ‘Jawaani Ki Reet’ (1939).

In the first stanza and elsewhere, It is ‘gham’ and ‘aah’ and not the plural ones. Kindly correct.

Who sang the male version of the song for Balraj Sahni; Chali Jaa 1951 Humlog Hindi Movie? It is for 1 min & 29 sec duration

I just came across an audio clip of the same song sung by Sandhya Mukherjee. I have heard this version for the first time. I checked her song rendition with the lyrics given above and found that this audio clip of the song contains one extra stanza as given below :

I have no idea whether there was another version of this song sung by Sandhya Mukherjee in the film or this one is a record version of the song.

Kamath ji,
The above mentioned song by you is NOT sung by Sandhya Mukherji.This was a version song of the original song.The record no. is GE 21037 and is sung by BINOTA CHAKRABORTY(nee Vinata Amladi-who sang ‘Dilli se aya bhai Tingu’ from ‘Ek Thi Ladki’).
The comment on UTube is wrong and I have just now put this remark there also.
