“Shaheed” (1965) was a movie based on Bhagat Singh’s life and most songs were patriotic songs. Even other songs of this movie evoke patriotic fervour, such is the feeling that this movie brings about in its listeners.
Here is a song from this movie which is basically a song where a girl is expressing her feeling for Bhagat Singh. Under normal circumstances, such a song would be called an “expression of love” song, but the listeners of this song still feel like this is a patriotic song.
This song is sung by Lata and picturised on an actress that I am not familiar with. I request my knowledgeable readers to help us identify her.
The song is picturised nicely. Listening to the song and watching the picturisation are both delightful experiences. Prem Dhawan, normally known as a lyricist, had not only written the songs in this movie, he had eve composed the music.
The song has one stanza (penultimate stanza) missing in the picturised version. I have included the picturised version as well as the full audio version of this song.

I just LOVE this song!
It is extremely pleasant to listen to and conveys feelings so beautifully.
Btw, there is a glimpse of our Laxmi Chhaya also here @1:28 adding to the mood.

Oh wow, I just noticed that is purdah–the women and men are segregated by those sheets–it’s not laundry hung out to dry :). Is this Lohri by any chance? Also, why does she call her lover “jogi”?

I have noticed that ‘Jogi” is a catch all phrase for a lover in songs written by Punjab origin lyricists. Rajinder Krishan in fact wrote lots of “Jogi” songs as did Prem Dhawan.

Normally “Jogi” means individuals who have devoted themselfs to something higher/spiritual.
I have seen this movie (“once upon a time”), but do not recall what was exact background behind this song.
In this movie (“Prem Dhawan” song writer/composer) most probably is trying to reflect state of a girl/women who is in love with an individual who is completed devoted to mother land (“azaadi”). Just a guess.

A very lovely song, has a tinge of melancholy.
This song definately does not fall under the category of patriotic song but a love – yearning song. As mentioned by Sid “Jogi” means individuals who have devoted themselves to something higher/spiritual. Also the implications are to those who have not developed attachments and spurn the worldly ties or are oblivious to the affection showered on them.
The story is, the actor is Bhagatsingh’s fiancee, but he is not ready to marry her since he is involved in the struggle for freedom.

Yes her Name was Sarita who at one time lived in Phillaur a town in Disst. Jalandhar (Punjab)
