Of late, I have started catching up on movies of the 1970s. I may or may not have seen the movie earlier but even if I have seen it earlier, I have no proper recollection of the story.
One of the movies I caught up with recently was 36 Ghante.
Now I clearly remember seeing this movie sometime in the 70s. The movie was promoted quite a bit at that time and I distinctly remember posters of the movie put up all over town.
The only thing I remembered about the story was that it was a hostage story. So I decided, with a cast like Raj Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Parveen Babi, it was definitely worth a repeat visit.
I loved the movie. Good story, very credible – and with some excellent acting by Raj Kumar.
One of the songs in the movie was “chup ho aaj”. Now, since I have seen the movie before, I should have remembered this song but I cannot remember it at all. It was almost like I was listening to it for the first time.
And I fell in love with it the moment I heard it.
It is a catchy song (well done, Sapan Chakravarty!) with lyrics somewhat too simple to be associated with Sahir Ludhianvi. But we must remember that this was the mid-70s and by then lyrics in Hindi cinema had got watered down considerably, with the popularity of “simple” song-writers like Anand Bakshi.
The song is beautifully sung by Kishore Kumar and picturised on Vijay Arora and a young Parveen Babi. She and Vijay have gone out for the evening but instead of having a good time, she looks worried. Vijay is questioning her about it. What she cannot tell him is that though she is outside the house, the other members of her family have been held hostage at home.
Lovely song from, what I consider, a very watchable movie. Do get a chance to see the movie if you can. And do listen to and enjoy this relatively unknown song (well, it was unknown to me at least).

Song-Chup ho aaj kaho kyaa hai baat (Chattees Ghante) (1974) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Sapan Chakravarty
Lyrics
Chup ho aaj kaho kya hai baat
zaraa bolo naa
Dhal na jaaye kahin dhalti raat,
zaraa bolo naa
Chup ho aaj kaho kya hai baat
zaraa bolo naa
Dhal na jaaye kahin dhalti raat,
zaraa bolo naa
Na to jaagi si, na to soyi si
Badi door ho kahin khoyi si,
zara bolo naa
Chup ho aaj kaho kya hai baat
zaraa bolo naa
Bolo naa
Dhal na jaaye kahin dhalti raat,
zaraa bolo naa
Yoon to saath ho sabke
Par judaa judaa si ho
Is haseen mehfil se
Kuchh khafaa khafaa si ho
Saans ki khushboo, aankh ka jaadoo
Is mehfil mein gholo naa
Chup ho aaj kaho kya hai baat
zaraa bolo naa
Bolo bolo
Dhal na jaaye kahin dhalti raat,
zaraa bolo naa
In haseen aankhon mein,
berukhi nahin sajti
Phool jaise honthon pe,
khamoshi nahin sajti
Naaz ye kya hai, raaz ye kya hai
Chup na raho, dil kholo naa
Chup ho aaj kaho kya hai baat
zaraa bolo naa
Dhal na jaaye kahin dhalti raat,
zaraa bolo naa
Na to jaagi si, na to soyi si
Badi door ho kahin khoyi si,
zara bolo naa
Chup ho aaj kaho kya hai baat
zaraa bolo naa
Bolo bolo
Dhal na jaaye kahin dhalti raat,
zaraa bolo naa
Bolo naa
