Tum jo huye mere hamsafar

Hindi movies have created some myths that have become so well established that it is now difficult to do away with them.
For instance, if people unfamiliar with India judge Indians by watching Hindi movies, then they could well believe that Indians spend lot of time in their lives falling in love and singing romantic songs to their beloved. Likewise, people who have watched lots of Chinese Martial arts movies may believe that Chinese people spent much of their time fighting each other through martial arts.
In Hindi movies, girl would initially disapprove of boy’s advances. This would offer movie makers a chance to slip in a teasing song. And surprisingly, this teasing song would cause the girl to begin responding to the advances of the boy and soon she would be found singing duets with him.
Here is this song from “12 O’clock” (1958) where we find Waheeda Rehman singing a duet with Guru Dutt.
This song is sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and O P Nayyar is the music director.
Only if real life in India imitated reel life of Hindi movies. Life for Indian boys would then wold have been far more pleasant.
PS-“12 O’ clock” ((1958) has seven songs in it. All the songs of this movie have been discussed by now. Here are the links to the other songs from this movie:
Aji o suno to nahin tumne hamen pehchaanaa
Arre taubaa ye teri adaa
Dekh idhar ae haseena
Kaisaa jaadoo balam toone daaraa
Main kho gayaa yahin kahin (12 O’clock)
Sainyya teri ankhiyon mein dil kho gaya

Lyrics
tum jo huye mere hamsafar
raste badal gaye
laakhon diye mere pyaar ki
raahon mein jal gaye
tum jo huye mere hamsafar
raste badal gaye
laakhon diye mere pyaar ki
raahon mein jal gaye
aayaa mazaa,
laayaa nashaa,
tere labon ki bahaaron kaa rang
mausam jawaan,
saathi haseen,
uspe nazar ke ishaaron kaa rang
jitne bhi rang thhe,
sab teri aankhon mein dhal gaye
laakhon diye mere pyaar ki,
raahon mein jal gaye
kyaa manzilen
kyaa kaarwaan,
baahon mein teri hai saaraa jahaan
aa jaan e jaan,
chal de wahaan,
milte jahaan pe zameen aasmaan
manzil se bhi kahin door ham,
aage nikal gaye
laakhon diye mere pyaar ki,
raahon mein jal gaye
tum jo huye mere hamsafar
raste badal gaye
laakhon diye mere pyaar ki
raahon mein jal gaye
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
aa haa haa haa
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
aa haa haa haa

Wonderful song! I just thought of this song, and wanted to see how it was filmed, and came here, and oh, how beautiful it is to see Waheeda and Guru Dutt singing this. The photography is great, with the sun coming through the leaves and the shadows falling on their faces – lovely! Thanks, Atul!
