Tumse bichhad ke chain kahaan ham paayenge

II have barely heard of this movie called “Maharaja” (1970). This movie had Sanjay Khan and Nutan in it, and this movie must have sung without a trace when it was released in 1970. To this day, I have not been able to understand how Sanjay Khan made it in Hindi movies as a hero. I in fact wonder if he ever had a loyal fan following that most heroes have.Compared to him, someone like Shashi Kapoor (whom I regard as no good) should be regarded as a superstar. If one has to make a list of movies that succeeded because of Sanjay Khan, one may well draw a blank. I am not at all surprised if this movie “Maharaja” (1970) fell miserably at the box office.
I do not feel any sympathy for Sanjay Khan, but I feel for the music of this movie. The movie did not desrve the songs that were created for this movie. The songs deserved much better fate.
Here is this wonderful song from this movie which has to a forgotten gem. I heard this song for the first time only recently. That is how obscure this song has become over the four decades or so that this song was created.
The song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Nutan and Sanjay Khan. There is confusion about who wrote this song. Most sources (all of them copying from each other) attribute this song to Kaifi Azmi. On the other hand, another source mentions Hasrat Jaipuri,Indeewar and Akhtar Romani as the three lyricists of this song, with Kaifi Azmi’s name not at all there in the list of lyricists for this song.Pending further information, I will go against the usual attribution and regard Akhtar Romani as the lyricist of this song.
PS-It appears that this song is penned by Kaifi Azmi, after all.
There is no confusion as far as the music director is concerned. Madan Mohan composed the music. Madan Mohan composing yet another gem of a song for a flop movie. That in fact was the case for most Madan Mohan compositions throughout his career.

Song-Tumse bichhd ke chain kahaan ham paayenge (Maharaja) (1970) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
Tumse bichhadke
chain kahan hum paayenge
hoge jahaan tum
hum bhi wahin aa jaayenge
poochho kyun,
haan haan
haan haan
poochho kyun
hum yeh kahenge
ke tum ho hamaari manzil
tumse bichhadke
chain kahan hum paayenge
hoge jahaan tum
hum bhi wahin aa jaayenge
poochho kyun,
haan haan
haan haan
poochho kyun
hum yeh kahenge
ke tum ho hamaari manzil
tumse bichhadke
chain kahan hum paayenge
dil hamein laaya yahaan
hum aa gaye
dil hamein laaya yahan
hum aa gaye
dekhkar tum humko kyun
ghabra gaye
raaz tum humraazdaan
saath jaise jism-o-jaan
chhupke jaaoge kahan
nazrein churaaoge
aur nazar hum aayenge
hum aayenge,
hum aayenge
tumse bichhadke
chain kahan hum paayenge
kitna dilkash hai
ye roohon ka safar
kitna dilkash hai
ye roohon ka safar
aao kaanton par hai
phoolon par nazar
darr hai kya deewaar kya,
jeet kya hai haar kya
ruk sakega pyaar kya
phool to kya hai,
kaanton ko hum mehkaayenge
mehkaayenge,
mehkaayenge
tumse bichhadke
chain kahan hum paayenge
naam honton par tumhaara
dil mein pyaar
naam honton par tumhaara
dil mein pyaar
bas yehi saj dhaj
yahi apna singaar
zindagi tumse haseen
tum kahin aur hum kahin
dil khilona to nahin
tum hi bata do
kaise isse behlaayenge
behlaayenge,
behlaayenge
tumse bichhadke
chain kahan hum paayenge
hoge jahan tum
hum bhi wahin aa jaayenge
poochho kyun,
haan haan
haan haan
poochho kyun
hum yeh kahenge
ke tum ho hamaari manzil
tumse bichhadke
chain kahan hum paayenge

This is one of those “one-year-old” songs!
Not that it is one year old but that you feel like you’ve heard it from the age of one! 🙂
Have definitely heard this before – but had no clue about its details. Thanks, Atul.
Sanjay and Nutan seems to be an add combo, at least for me. I am more used to Nutan with Sunil Dutt, Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand, Dharmendra types.
By 1970, Nutan must have been at the fag end of her career. That may have contributed to this movie not doing well (Sanjay-Nutan does not excite me as a pair anyway).
You are brutal, you are! If you don’t rate somebody, that person has had it on your blog. 🙂 Sort of modern-day Babubhai Patel of yesteryear Filmindia. 😉
I saw an interview with Sanjay and Zarine a while ago. Sanjay talked about his days – apparently he was quite a big star at that time (or so he said! ;-)).
He did have movies like Dus Lakh, Inteqam and Mela, though I don’t think his acting had anything to do with these movies doing well.

Those were the days when Hindi movies has feminine clean shaven and fair complexioned males as popular heroes. No wonder Sanjay was fairest of all & hence very popular despite limited acting ability.

I am also one amongst those who had heard this song many times without knowing any details. I came across accidentally this song while surfing YT and switched over to this blog to get details.
In one of the comments on this song in YT, it has been mentioned that the film was released on Friday and withdrawn from theaters on Sunday.

I was not aware of the fact that there was a film called Maharaja till I read it here. As regards Sanjay Khan, he was noticed in Dus Lakh and some other films but nver was a Hero. It may be said ‘ also ran’ type.Nothing more nothing less. I had heard this song before but did not bother to enquire about its lyricist and music director.Surprised to learn only today that it is the creation of Kafi and Madan Mohan.

Atul ji
This song is penned by Kaifi Azmi. This confirmation is as per the original HMV label details. This movie did have songs penned by four lyricists, i.e. Hasrat, Indeevar and Akhtar besides Kaifi. However, as per label details, every song is penned by one of these individually, no collaboration on lyrics.
